  • Renewable energy resources such as wind and photovoltaic power generation systems demand a high step-up DC-DC converters to convert the low voltage to commercial grid voltage. However, the high step-up converter using a transformer has limitations of high voltage stresses of switches and diodes when the transformer winding ratio increases. Accordingly, conventional studies have been applied to series-connect multioutput converters such as forward-flyback and switched-capacitor flyback to reduce the transformer winding ratio. This paper proposes new single-ended converter topologies of an isolation type and a non-isolation type to improve power efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and output ripple. The first proposal is an isolation-type charge-pump switched-capacitor flyback converter that includes an extreme-ratio isolation switched-capacitor cell with a chargepump circuit. It reduces the transformer winding number and the output ripple, and further improves power efficiency without any cost increase. The next proposal is a non-isolation charge-pump switched-capacitor-flyback tapped-inductor boost converter, which adds a charge-pump-connected flyback circuit to the conventional switched-capacitor boost converter to improve the power efficiency and to reduce the efficiency degradation from the input variation. In this paper, the operation principle of the proposed scheme is presented with the experimental results of the 100 W DC-DC converter for verification.

  • Multiport power converters have recently become popular to researchers and engineers. However, more improvements are required in terms of their soft-switching operation, bidirectional operation, and integration. In this study, a bidirectional three-port three-switch DC-DC converter is proposed. The converter contains a low-current ripple port and ripple-free current port. Through the integrated structure, utilization of a coupled inductor, and a new switching strategy, the aforementioned specifications are achieved. A modified switching strategy is also utilized in the converter, which has resulted in the bidirectional operation of the converter between ports. Finally, a comprehensive analysis is presented, and the converter characteristics are validated by experimental results.

  • This paper presents the magnetic fields shielding properties of the light rail transit which are produced by the ripple-shaped currents in the power lines. To analyze these properties, the equivalent circuit model of the DC power supply system at the light rail transit system was induced by MATLAB-SIMULINK, and with the calculated results of the ripple-shaped currents, the magnetic fields shielding properties of the light rail transit were analyzed. The results are as follows. First The frequency of the ripple-shaped currents is 200[Hz] and its magnitude is 1.5[A]. Second the magnetic fields produced by the ripple-shaped currents of the DC power supply systems are well shielded by the aluminum made body of the light rail transit.

  • A novel non-isolated bidirectional soft-switching SEPIC/ZETA converter with reduced ripple currents is proposed and characterized in this study. Two auxiliary switches and an inductor are added to the original bidirectional SEPIC/ZETA components to form a new direct power delivery path between input and output. The proposed converter can be operated in the forward SEPIC and reverse ZETA modes with reduced ripple currents and increased voltage gains attributed to the optimized selection of duty ratios. All switches in the proposed converter can be operated at zero-current-switching turn-on and/or turn-off through soft current commutation. Therefore, the switching and conduction losses of the proposed converter are considerably reduced compared with those of conventional bidirectional SEPIC/ZETA converters. The operation principles and characteristics of the proposed converter are analyzed in detail and verified by the simulation and experimental results.

  • This paper presents a torque ripple reduction technique of direct torque control(DTC) for high power induction motors driven by 3-level inverters with the inverter switching frequency limited around 0.5-1kHz level. It is noted that conventional DTC algorithms to reduce torque ripple are devised for applications with relatively high switching frequency above 2-3kHz. A new DTC algorithms especially for low switching frequency inverter system illustrates relatively reduced torque ripple are devised for applications with relatively high switching frequency above 2-3kHz. Anew DTC algorithm especially for low switching frequency inverter system illustrates relatively reduced torque ripple characteristics Simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm

  • In this study, a harmonic-pulsation-compensator (HPC) is presented to reduce a periodic speed ripple in IPMSM. A proportional-integral compensator in HPC is proposed instead of the existing integral compensator to reduce the speed ripple more rapidly. A formula to calculate a rotation angle is also proposed, making compensation optimal in sensored and sensorless controls. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified by experiments.

  • This paper proposes a current ripple reduction method to improve the control performance of B4 type inverter that is studied for cost-effective drive systems. B4 inverters employ only four switches and they have a center-tapped connection between the split dc-link capacitors and one phase of a three-phase motor or load. In the B4 topology, unbalanced three-phase voltages will be generated due to the dc-link voltage ripple. To solve this problem, this paper presents a voltage distortion compensation method that adjusts the voltage reference with the consideration of dc-link voltage ripple. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and excremental results with an induction machine.

  • This paper investigates the operational modes of buck dc-dc converters and their energy transmission methods. The operational modes of such converters are classified in two types, discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and continuous conduction mode (CCM). In this paper, the critical inductance relation of DCM and CCM is determined. The equations of the output voltage ripple (OVR) for each mode are obtained for a specific input voltage and load resistance range. The maximum output voltage ripple (MOVR) is also obtained for each mode. The filter size is decreased and the minimum required inductance value is calculated to guarantee the minimization of the MOVR. The experimental and simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC prove the correctness of the presented theoretical concepts.
