  • Inquiring activities on the acoustic phenomena have been carried out by using a sound card installed in a personal computer. A sound card is cheaper and more accessible to the students than the precision equipment such as a function generator or an oscilloscope. The students record the sounds from various acoustic phenomena to the sound card. Then they analyze the frequency spectrums of that sounds by using a program. Inquired phenomena include beat by two tuning forks, sound from Rijke tube, pouring sound, breaking of a wine glass and pop-up sound of a wine bottle. Through these activities students perform quantitative analysis of various phenomena due to superposition, resonance and standing wave.

  • The Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT) technigue with Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is one of the time-frequency domain analysis methods and it has several advantages such that analyzing non-stationary and nonlinear signal is possible. However, there are shortcomings in detecting near-range of frequencies and added noise signals. In this paper, to analyze characteristics of each method, HHT and Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) effective in dealing with stationary signals are compared. And with thermoacoustic instabilities signals from a Rijke tube test, HHT and the improved HHT with Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) are compared. The results show that the improved HHT is more appropriate than the original HHT due to the relative insensitivity to noise. Therefore it will result in more accurate analysis.

  • The instabilities in rocket engines and gas turbine combustors due to the interaction between the fluid flow (acoustics) and the heat transfer (thermal energy) are called thermoacoustic or combustion instabilities. Almost all analysis assumes constant hot section temperature for Modern mathematical analysis of acoustic oscillations in Rijke type devices. However, it is impossible to predict whether a system is stable or not because the flame or heater response model can have a dramatic effect on predicted growth rates. In this study, A standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model and hybrid combustion model(eddy breakup model and chemical reaction) were used. After steady solution was gotten, unsteady calculation is simulated by perturbating on pressure boundary. As a result, we obtained the relationship of equivalence ratio and frequency by numerical simulation, and they are comparable to the experimental result. In addition, in spite of these results, there are limitations of using turbulent and combustion model in simulation method of thermoacoutic instability

  • Combusion instability due to thermoacoustic feedback in a ducted combustor usually excites severe noise and vibration, which could lead to result in the failure of the system or environmental dispute. In the present study, an active noise control(ANC) method with an adaptive algotithm is hired to suppress instability which has very discrete behavior in the frequency domain. Especially a feedback system is composed to evade hot environment of the combustor, and as a preliminary, the performance and stability of the controller is chekced by simulating the real situation with harmonic waves. Application to the real combustor showed serious reductions in sound pressure level by 20∼30 dB. It was also shown that the selected control system was very stable and effective.

  • Combustion instability is a common phenomenon in a ducted flame burner and is known as accompanying low frequency oscillation. This is due to the interaction between unsteady heat release rate and sound pressure field, that is, thermoacoustic feedback. In Rayleigh criterion, combustion instability is triggered when the heat additions is in phase with acoustic oscillation. A Rijke type burner with a pre-mixed flame is built for investigating the effect of Reynolds number and equivalence ratio on thermoacoustic oscillation. In addition, the effect of wall temperature is presented. The results suggest that the frequency of max. oscillation is dependent on Reynolds number and equivalence ratio whereas its magnitude is not a strong function of these two parameters. On the other hand, the wall temperature distribution has much strong effects on the oscillation, even creates different mode of acoustic resonance.

  • A strong combustion-driven sound from a surface burner made of a perforated metal fiber plate for premixed gas was investigated to clarify the physical mechanism of its generation. A simple model was developed for the acoustic power generation in terms of the heat transfer response function and the acoustic impedance of the burner. The acoustic impedance of the perforated metal fiber placed on the open exit was measured and the heat release response of the burner to the oscillating flow associated with the acoustic disturbance was expressed in terms of a response function. It was found that the power is generated by the heat release in response to the downstream particle velocity, in contrast to the upstream velocity in the case of the Rijke oscillation driven by a heater placed in the lower half of a columm with upstream flow. The measured frequencies of the oscillation were in agreement with the estimated resonance frequencies and their excitation was varied with the combustion conditions. For the same fuel rate, the excited frequency increases with the air ratio if it is low but decreases with the ratio if not so low. Such frequency characteristics were explained by assuming a heat release response function with a time constant and it was shown that the excited frequency decreases as the time constant increases.

  • Rayleigh was an excellent experimenter as well as a theorist. Rayleigh improved Rijke's sounding device by heat and the singing flame into sources of pure tones. Above all, his making of the artificial bird whistle was a critical achievement in the improvement of experimental sound sources. This source made supersonic waves available in the laboratory and thus paved the way to confirmable observations of reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference of sound in the laboratory Furthermore, Rayleigh augmented the sensitivity of sensitive flames as detectors for sound wave. Besides, he devised a phonic wheel which could precisely control the angular velocity of some acoustical instruments and made the Rayleigh-disk that enabled experimenters to measure the absolute value of the sound intensity. These devices enhanced the exactness of acoustical experiments.

  • This study is on the pulsating combustion of premixed gas in a Rijke type combustor made of a honeycomb flame holder in a tube. Modelling for the onset condition of the oscillation is made by the ratio of the acoustic power generation based on the analysis of heat transfer to the power loss due to the thermoviscous dissipation and radiation. Experiment is performed for the characteristics of acoustic, thermal and combustion. It is shown that the theoretical modelling for the oscillation may be used as a limit condition. And the combustion analysis for the acoustic power generation is needed for better prediction of the onset condition. Experimental result shows that, by pulsation, the flame length is shortened and the flame temperature is decreased with increase in the heat transfer coefficient. The NO$_{x}$ concentration in the exhaust gas is significantly reduced by pulsation and the concentration of unburned hydrocarbon shows a little increase.e.

  • Thermoacoustic oscillation of an air column induced by heated wires is investigated analytically and experimentally. Acoustic power generation from a single heater wire is estimated based on the result of heat transfer analysis and expressed in terms of the efficiency factor indicating the conversion efficiency from heat to acoustic energy. It is shown that the efficiency factor becomes maximum when the wire radius is the order of the coustic boundary layer thickness and the flow velocity is close to the thermal diffusion velocity. Onset condition of the column oscillation is obtained by equating the acoustic power generation at the heater to the power loss due to thermoviscous dissipation at the tube wall and the convection and radiationloss at the open ends of the tube. In estimating the acoustic power generation, the heater is treated as a stretched single wire by correcting the flow velocity to take into account the interactions between adjacent heater wires. Experiment is performed by using a spiral heater of 1mm diameter in an air column of 37mm diameter. The heat input to drive the oscillation is measured and compared with the theoretical prediction. A good agreement is found between the theory and experiment, which is regarded as a substantial verification of the present analysis.
