Aggregate shape influence on the fracture behaviour of concrete

  • The Discrete Element Method, DEM, is increasingly used in fracture studies of non-homogeneous continuous media, such as rock and concrete. A 2D circular rigid DEM formulation, developed to model concrete, has been adopted. A procedure developed to generate aggregate particles with a given aspect ratio and shape is presented. The aggregate particles are modelled with macroparticles formed by a group of circular particles that behave as a rigid body. Uniaxial tensile and compression tests performed with circular and non-circular aggregates, with a given aspect ratio, have shown similar values of fracture toughness when adopting uniform strength and elastic properties for all the contacts. Non-circular aggregate assemblies are shown to have higher fracture toughness when different strength and elastic properties are set for the matrix and for the aggregate/matrix contacts.

  • This paper concerns about a study on dynamic responses of tracked vehicle on soft cohesive soil. For dynamic analyses of tracked vehicle, two different models were adopted, i.e. a single-body model and a multi-body model. The single-body vehicle model was assumed as a rigid body with 6-dof. The multi-body vehicle was modeled by using a commercial software, RecurDyn-LM. For the both models properties of cohesive soft soil were modeled by means of three relationships: pressure to sinkage, shear displacement to shear stress, and shear displacement to dynamic sinkage. Traveling performances of the two tracked vehicle models were compared through dynamic analyses in time domain.

  • Human dummies are essential tools in the development of such sensible products as vehicles. Dummies are actively used not only in reach and view field tests, major ergonomic evaluations, but also in impact tests and perception evaluations. This study attempts to obtain possible correlations of human body segments from Korean anthropometric data. The investigation is focused on the description of human and dummy geometric and inertial properties. The modeling approach suggested is based on rigid body dynamics using fifteen individual body segments connected by joints.   • In tilting pad bearing design process, the selection of the proper configuration type of either a load-between-pad(LBP) or load-on-pad(LOP) as well as preload and pivot offset conditions is to be carefully considered. Also the bearing needs to be designed in order to be suited for the rotor-bearing system and operating condition. In this paper, it is observed that the dynamic characteristics in a five pad tilting pad bearing for the LBP and the LOP configurations are influenced by the variation of preload and pivot offset. In this context, rotor dynamic analysis of the 5 MW industrial gas turbine supported by the tilting pad bearing at the front and roller bearing at the rear is carried out based on the dynamic coefficients of the tilting pad bearing investigated. The result shows that two rigid body critical modes experience various changes according to the influence of the tilting pad bearing uniquely applied to one side of this machine. Mainly, the second critical speed, the rigid body mode of conical shape with high whirling in the tilting pad bearing, is significantly changed by preload and pivot offset regardless of the LBP and LOP configurations. And, the first critical mode, the rigid body mode of conical shape with high whirling in the roller bearing, is sensitively affected by preload applied to the LOP configuration and by its asymmetric dynamic properties.

  • In this study, the effects of different glycol molar ratios of unsaturated polyester(UPE) resins on the curing behaviors were investigated. The cross linking process was checked or monitored by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and by viscoelastic properties of rigid-body pendulum model. The knife-edge from which the pendulum is suspended, is immersed in a reaction mixture, and the change of the viscoelastic behavior brings on those of the period(T) and logarithmic decrement(${\Delta}$) of the damped free oscillations of the pendulum. The values of T and ${\Delta}$ obtained are related to the dynamic modulus(E') and modulus loss(E'). The information on the viscoelastic behavior of unsaturated polyester(UPE) resins during the curing process are shown to illustrate the usefulness of the techniques. As the content of NPG in a propylene glycol(PG)/NPG glycol mixture increased, both the cycle time during cure and the change of damping during cure of UPE resin decreased.

  • Human dummies are essential tools in the development of such products as vehicle have been actively used not only in reach and view field tests. but also in impact perception evaluations. This study attempted to obtain geometric and dynamic model body segments from Korean anthropometric data. The investigation focused on the de both human and dummy for the geometric and inertial properties. The dynamic modeli being suggested is based on rigid body dynamics using fifteen individual body segments by joins. The segments are connected at the locations representing the physical joint body so that each segment has its mass and moment of inertia. For visual three-dimensional graphic was used for easier implementation of the dumn applications. For applications, proposed Korean dummies Were used in dynamic crash and driver's view and reach test modules were developed in virtual environment.

Determination of Dynamic Parameters of Agricultural Tractor Cab-Suspension by Modal Analysis (모드 해석을 이용한 트랙터 캡-현가 장치의 동적 파라미터 결정에 관한 연구)

  • This study was intended to determine the inertia , damping and stiffness properties of the cab-suspension of agricultural tractors by applying the direct system identification method (DSIM). Since the rigid and elastic modes of the cab-suspension are not likely to be separated clearly, direct application of the DSIM may result in large computation error. To solve such a problem, a method of locating mass center of the cab were determined by assuming the behavior of the cab-suspension is a rigid body motion. The dynamic parameters of the cab-suspension were then determined by applying the DSIM with the known coordinates of the mass center. The constraints of spatial matrices of the cab-suspension also make the algorithm for the DSIM perform better. The values of dynamic parameters determined by this method agreed well with those determined by the experiment.

  • We present a new finite-element scheme for direct numerical simulation of particle suspensions in simple shear flow of a viscoelastic fluid in 3D. The sliding tri-periodic representative cell concept has been combined with DEVSS/DG finite element scheme by introducing constraint equations along the domain boundary. Rigid body motion of the freely suspended particle is described by the rigid-shell description and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers on particle boundaries. We present the bulk rheology of suspensions through the numerical examples of single-, two- and many-particle problems, which represent a large number of such systems in simple shear flow. We report the steady bulk viscosity and the first normal stress coefficient, which show shear-thickening behavior for both properties.

  • In this study, we investigate the curvature functions of ruled surface with lightlike ruling for a null curve with Cartan frame in Minkowski 3-space. Also, we give relations between the curvature functions of this ruled surface and curvature functions of central normal surface. Finally, we use the curvature theory of the ruled surface for determine differential properties of a robot end-effector motion.
