  • In railway construction, superimposition of horizontal and vertical curves has critical effects on the running stability and the ride comfort of vehicles as well as on construction costs. In this study, running safety, ride comfort, and track acting forces were analyzed by a numerical analysis using the VAMPIRE program according to cases of superimposition of vertical and horizontal curves. From the analysis results, it was found that running safety, riding comfort, and track acting forces in the case of superimposition of vertical and horizontal curves as well as vertical and transition curves meet all of the criteria. Also, in the case of the superimposition of vertical curves and curvature change between horizontal transition curves and circular curves meet all of the criteria.

  • Track geometry changes by traffic loads. The bigger the changes are, the worse the riding comfort and running stability of train. This is so-called track irregularity and is the most important quality parameters of ballasted track. To objectively assess track irregularity, track geometry should be able to be measured. Practically, railway companies in Korea use various track recording equipments to measure track irregularity. But this various equipments output different data due to their geometrical structure even measured at same location. In this report, the correlation of various track recording data used in Korea was reviewed.

  • This paper aims to establish a guideline for ridership capacity of different rail vehicles for military passengers. Previous guideline is limited only to a Mungungwha(hauled by diesel locomotive) vehicle, but this paper expands the limitation to ITX- Saemaeul and urban rail vehicles classified to Electric Motivated Unit(EMU). The guideline considers both with and without personal armor conditions, and based on repetitive ridership experiments. The experiments are designed under considerations of the required number of soldiers for the sample spaces of the different rail vehicles. Moreover, the design tries to establish a concept of optimal capacity additionally to a traditional limiting ridership capacity. In order to do this, ridership comfort is questioned to participant soldiers repetitively over the experiments and all answers of them are surveyed as a results of it. The results of the experiments presented by this paper can be referenced to establish a new guideline on ridership capacity for Korean army.

  • To improve the riding comfort of high speed trains, it needs active suspension system for railway more and more. In Japan, the high speed train, Shinkansen has adopted semi active suspension system and now it is running in the main trunk. In Korea, Koeran Train Express (KTX) is opened to commercial traffic and Korea High speed Railway (HSR350) is being developed. So the vibration control of the high speed train becomes important. In this paper, we introduce technical skill of Japanese semi active suspension Shinkansen to be helpful to the related researcher.

  • To improve the riding comfort and to increase the speed of high-speed railway, it needs active suspension system for railway more and more. In Korea, Korean Train Express (KTX) was opened to commercial traffic 3years ago. Korea High-speed Railway (HSR 350x) was developed and succeeded 350km/h test run by Korean government and several related institute. With the increase of the speed, the vibration control of the high-speed railway becomes important to improve high ride quality. To meet this request, the authors suggest the installation of lateral semi-active damper to the power car of HSR 350x. The result shows better performance.

But some countries use non-normal distribution according to their own track recording system. In this report, reviewed probability distribution of Kyung-Bu high-speed line and tested normality.

  • The riding comfort and the durability of train are effected by the rail irregularities such as track gauge, superelevation, alignment, longitudinal level, twist, cant and cross level. Inspection and estimation of irregularities are very important to maintain the rail condition. Generally, the EM120 has been utilized to measure the rail irregularities once a month in Korea. However, the EM120 can be operated at night time only, because the inspection speed of EM120 is much slower than the speed of high-speed trains. Also, the EM120 is too slow to inspect effectively for the whole commercial line. Therefore, we have mounted the track inspection system on the High-Speed Rolling Stock 350 eXperimental (HSR350X) and measured the rail irregularities to confirm the condition of a rail while running 300km/h. In this paper, the track inspection system mounted on HSR350X is mainly considered, and the measured results through test run are introduced.

  • This paper presents an active suspension control algorithm to improve the suspension performance trade-offs between riding comfort and handling stability. In this paper, a hybrid control scheme is proposed, the idea of which is that sliding mode control is used for nonlinear hydraulic system and the skyhook control is applied to control the vehicle behavior. The parameter variations in hydraulic system are considered for the robust controller design. The performance of the proposed control method is evaluated by simulation and experiments based on a half car roll model which can reveal both heave and roll behavior.

  • This paper shows how can be controlled the rubber tired TRAM by electromagnetic field with a specific pattern as autonomous driving system. The system is composed with drive elements. steering elements. navigational devices. transmitter/receivers and sensor means for sensing the position relative to the magnetic markers. There are difficulties in sensing track conditions. curvatures. slops etc. forward compared to that of the control system optically. The sensing track conditions previously is important for running stability and riding comfort. This paper shows how can achieve track condition in advance by means of electromagnetic pattern originally.
