Realization of Folded Ridge Waveguide Using Y-type Structure and Transition of Folded Ridge Waveguide (Y형 구조물을 통해 구현된 접힌 Ridge 도파관 및 접힌 Ridge 도파관의 트랜지션)

  • In this paper, in order to realize lower cut-off frequency of the waveguide, the folded Ridge waveguide (FRWG) is suggested by alternating T-shape structure in the conventional folded waveguide with Y-shape structure. Suggested FRWG can be equivalent by the reverse Ridge waveguide. As the height of side of the FRWG is lower, the width of side is increased. Therefore, the cut-off frequency of the FRWG can be decreased more than half compared with conventional waveguide. The FRWG is designed with the length, height, and width of Y-shape structure of 40mm, 20mm, and 2mm, respectively. Designed FRWG has the cut-off frequency of the 1.996GHz. Also, the transition between the FRWG and SMA connector is designed. The transition is optimized by the capacitance of the signal line of the connector. Its result shows the VSWR under 2:1 in the band of 2.064 ~ 3.050 GHz. Suggested FRWG can be applied with miniaturization of various waveguide devices.

Calculation of Input Impedance of Nonuniformly Ridged Rectangular Waveguide (비균일 Ridge 구형 도파관의 입력 임피던스 계산)

  • The cutoff frequencies of a double ridged rectangular waveguide are calculated by applying the modal analysis to its cross-section. And the characteristic impedance of its $TE_{10}$ mode is evaluated in a frequency range of 6 to 18 GHz. When both ends of a linearly tapered rectangular wa- veguide consists of single and double ridged rectangular cross-sections, the equivalent nonuniform transmission line of its $TE_{10}$ mode is solved numerically. It is shown that the input impedance at its single ridged terminal becomes nearly constant in the wide bandwidth.

  • We propose a novel vertical directional coupler with polarization independent very short coupling lengths using the double-sided deep-ridge waveguide structure which could be implemented using double-sided process to polarization insensitive deep-ridge waveguide structures and investigate the effect of various structure parameters on the coupling length. Variation of coupling length for the variation of the waveguide width is smaller than that for the variation of the core thickness. Coupling length decreases as the inner cladding layer thickness and the core thickness decrease. The waveguide width with the polarization independent coupling length decreases as the inner cladding layer thickness decreases for the same core thickness and the core thickness decreases for the same inner cladding layer thickness.

  • The multiple-ridged circular waveguides is analyzed using Fourier series and the mode matching technique. The enforcement of the boundary conditions yields the simultaneous equations for the field coefficient inside the waveguides. The simultaneous equations are solved to represent a dispersion relation in an analytic series form. The numerical computation is performed to illustrate the behavior of the cutoff wavenumbers in terms of number, length and angle of ridges. The presented series solution is exact and rapidly-convergent so that it is efficient for numerical computation. A simple dispersion relation based on the dominant mode analysis is obtained and is shown to be very accurate for most practical applications.

  • In this paper, a MMIC waveguide mixer module based upon the novel suggested mode converter for wave-guide-to-microstrip transition was fabricated and measured. The insertion and return losses of the mode converter was optimized by compensating the discontinuity effect between ridge and microstrip with the modification of 50 $\Omega$ microstrip line pattern. Due to the low loss nature of the mode converter, a millimeter wave MMIC mixer chip can be successfully applied as a waveguide module for mmW waveguide communication system. The measured results of the module showed the successful MMIC chip application in waveguide and the negligible degradation of the supplied chip specification.

  • In this paper, we propose a wideband ridge SIW(Ridge Substrate Integrated Waveguide)-to-SIW(Substrate Integrated Waveguide) transition. The proposed transition structure is designed to acquire a wide bandwidth by inserting through via holes at the regular interval for an impedance matching and an E-field mode matching method. The measurement results show a fractional bandwidth is 29.1 % at 20 dB return loss from the center frequency(11 GHz). The maximum insertion loss is 0.49 dB from 9.21 GHz to 12.41 GHz.

  • L자형 루프를 이용하여 주파수대역이 6-18 GHz인 동축-이중릿지도파관 변환기를 상용 소프트웨어인 HFSS를 이용하여 설계한 후 제작하였다. L자형 루프는 동축-구형도파관 변환기에 이미 이용되고 있는 구조로써, 이를 동축-이중릿지도파관 변환기에 적용한 것이다. 제작 후 측정결과 대역폭이 6-18 GHz로 3:1 이상을 만족하며, 최대 삽입손실이 -1.52 dB 이었다.

cutoff Mode characteristics in step-rigded waveguide (스텝-리지도피관의 차단모드특성)

  • Theoretical analysis is carried out for the curtoff wavelength characteristics of rectangular waveguide containing a step-ridge. In order to obtain the cutoff wavelength of step-rigde waveguide, an transmission matriz is formulated by the method of equivalent transverse resonance. The characteristic equation, in which the wavelength is obtainable by the numerical method, is derived from the equation. An approximate determination of the dominant mode fields in step-ridge waveguides at all frequencies has been made. Using these fields, the characteristic impedance equation is derived from power considerations. Analyzing the results of the calculations, the following characteristics are noted. The values of λ /a of TE10 mode increase with decreasing gap lengths and with increasing step width S or S , or both. Experimental results of cutoff characteristics are in good agreement with the theoretical analusis. It is shown that a waveguide within which a step-ridge is placed has a lower cutoff frequency and impedance than empty guide without it. Therefore, the role of a step-ridge guide is to broadening the bandwidth 2 to 3 times more than that of an empty guide of the same demension.

  • An application determination of the dominant-mode fields in ridge waveguides at all frequencies has been made. Evaluations of the fields along the walls of a commercially standard single-ridge guide having a usable frequency range from 3.75 to 15.0 Gc, This paper presented the analysis of the mode directive coupling characteristics of two ridge waveguide using mode matching techniques for TE10 mode.

Design of Dual-Polarized Waveguide Slot Array Antenna for Synthetic Aperture Radar (영상레이더용 이중편파 도파관 슬롯 안테나 설계)

  • In this paper, the waveguide slot array antenna which is capable of wide beam steering and dual polarization is designed for an X band synthetic aperture radar. In order to improve the restriction of beam steering range and to remove the butterfly lobes, a typical waveguide slot array antenna has been modified. To implement dual polarization, rod excited waveguide slot elements and ridge waveguide slot elements are alternately arranged. Location of slots, inclination of rod and offset distance of slots are determined on using array characteristic and conductance constant with radiating power on slots. The designed antenna is manufactured and measured with Near-filed measurement method.
