  • The sutdies were carried out to evaluate the consituents in the rihzomes of the cultivated Korean Rhubarb (Polygonaceae). From the acetone fraction ofl methanol extract Compound I (1, 8-dihydroxy-3-methyl anthraquinone, chrysophanic acid), Compound II($chrysophanol-8-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$), Compound III ($emodin-8-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$) and Compound IV ($aloe-emodin-8-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$), and from the ether fraction Compound V(1, 8-dihydorxy-3-emthyl-6-methoxy anthraquinone, physcion) and Compound VI (1, 6, 8-thitydroxy-3-emthyl anthrauinone, emodin), and also from the n-buthanol fraction Compound VII ($rhapontigenin-3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside, rhaponticin$) and Compound VIII ($piceatannol-3'-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$), were isolated and identified on the basis of their physico-chemical and spectroscopic evidences (UV, IR, H-NMR, C-NMR, EI-MS), respectively.

  • Two new phenolic glycosides were isolated from the rhizomes of Curculigo orchioides Gaertn.. Based on comprehensive spectroscopic analyses including IR, MS, 1D- and 2D NMR (COSY, HSQC, and HMBC), their structures were elucidated as 3-hydroxyl-5-methyphenol-1-O-[${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-($1{\rightarrow}3$)-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (1) and 1',3'-dimethoxyl-4-hydroxyalangifolioside (2).

  • A variety of Rhei Rhizoma are in circulation in the herbal medicine markets. The most of them were below the standard according to the Korea Pharmacopoeia. The rhizomes of Rheum undulatum, which is not recorded as the origin of Rhei Rhizoma in the Korea Pharmacopoeia, were the most common in Korean herbal medicine markets.

  • Comparative biological activities of 70fr methanol extracts from the main roots and rhizomes of both red and white ginsengs were investigated using several in vitro experimental models. The main root of red ginseng and the rhizome of white ginseng strongly inhibited lipld peroxidation of hepatic microsomes induced by the non-enzymatic $Fe^{+}$ / Ascorbate system. The main root and rhizome of red ginseng markedly inhibited the release of G07, GPT and LDH by $CCl_4$-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes as compared with those of white ginseng. And also, the main root of red ginseng showed a slight differentiating activity on HL-60 cancer cell line. The results suggest that the rhizome of ginseng have potential as a source of medicinal crude drug with possible pharmacolobica1 applications .

  • This study was carried out to elucidate the physiological and ecological mechamism of the branch pattern and electronmicroscopic structure of photosynthetic organs in Zoysia japonica Steud. The angles between the internodes of rhizome and the branches of Z.iaponica were changed from 0 to 52 degrees. The rhizomes tended to branch from the 3th node to the 10th node. When the terminal bud was damaged by various environmental factors, the initial branching formation was appeared immediately to the 4th node. The internode growth of the rhizome started from the beginning of April and continued to the end of Octobor. It became evident that there is a division labor between two different kinds of photosynthetic cells of mesophyll and bundle sheath tissues in Z.japonica The thick-walled bundle sheath cells surrounds the leaf vascular bundles as the Kranz type and separates them from the mesophyll cells.

  • The rhizome rot of ginger, caused by fusarium oxysporum f.zingiberi, gives a great deal of damages to the ginger farming in Korea. Main symptoms to the disease include the yellowing and blighting of the stems as the rotting of rhizomes. The infection rate was 20 percent in Bongdong, Jeonbug, whereas 10 percent in Susan, Chungnam. The rate was higher at the farm where gingers had been cultivated for many years. To control the disease, soil fungicides Dowfum MC-2 and Tolene C-17 were turned out to be more effective than Di-Trapex nad Daconil. Treatment of Benlate to the rhizome pieces, which were cut for propagation, also showed a better result as compared with that of Othocide. Dual treatment of both Dowfum MC-2 or Tolene C-17 to the farm soil and Benlate to the rhizome pieces was recommended for the best chemical control.

  • Polygonum cuspidatum $S_{IEB}$. et $Z_{UCC}$. ('Ho-Jang'), P. sachalinense $F_R$. $S_{CHM}$. ('Wang Ho-Jang') and P. ellipticum $M_{IGO} ('Dung Geun Ib Ho-Jang') are the three species growing in Korea. Their rhizomes can be classified into two types: horizontal rhizome type ('Ho-Jang') and erect type ('Wang Ho-Jang' and 'Dung Geun Ib Ho-Jang'). The most of 'Ho-Jang' on Korean markets are the rhizome of 'Wang Ho-Jang' and only limited quantity of the rhizome of 'Ho-Jang' is used. 'Dung Geun Ib Ho-Jang' is a species transplanted from the China continent and is not collected for medicinal use. It is suggested that the name 'Ho-Jang Geun' (Reynoutriae Radix) should be corrected to 'Ho-Jang' (Reynoutriae Rhizoma=Polygoni Rhizoma).

  • Gastrodia elata Blume belongs to Orchidaceae, its steamed and dried rhizomes are very important herbal medicines used for the medical treatment of headaches. migraine. dizziness, epilepsy, rheumatism. neuralgia. paralysis and other neuralgic and nervous disorders. Although phytochemical studies of the rhizome have revealed the presence of several phenolic compounds. in which a phenolic glycoside. gastrodin (C13H18O7). is a major consituent, so far, there is no report on the studies of its aerial part.
