Various Trichoderma spp. were evaluated for the development of biofungicides to control soilborne pathogen, Rhiztonia solani, Various Trichoderma spp. were initially tested for their ability to inhibit growth of R. solani by inhibition zone test. Inhibition zones of 3∼5 mm toward R. solani were detected on PDA agar plates. The parasitic activity of strains, the activities of cell-wall-degrading enzymes such as glucanases and chitinases, were also evaluated. Highest activities of glucanase and chitinase were 3.5 U/ml and 0.9 U/ml, respectively, Isolated Trichoderma spp. also exhibited good growth with currently used agrochemicals, which represents that the isolated biofungicides can be mutually used with agrochemicals.
The Rhizoctonia blight causing by Rhizoctonia spp. is an important disease of turfgrass, requiring fungicide application to maintain acceptable conditions for turfgrass good qualities in the golf course. The experiment was conducted to determine the mean 50% effective concentration inhibiting mycelial growth ($EC_{50}$) value of to flutolanil, pyraclostrobine and hexaconazole to Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 IB, Rhizoctonia cerealis and Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2IV isolated from Gyeongbuk province of Korea in vitro. Five discriminatory concentrations of each fungicide were used to detect in vitro sensitivity. The mean of $EC_{50}$ values to three systemic fungicides was the lowest isolate of R. solani AG-1 IB. However, the sensitivity of fungicides to Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2IV were higher mean $EC_{50}$ value of 0.026 ${\mu}g\;a.i.\;ml^{-1}$ of pyraclostrobine and 0.044 ${\mu}g\;a.i.\;ml^{-1}$ of flutolanil. R. cerealis was the lowest sensitivity to hexaconazole which was an average $EC_{50}$ value of 0.022 ${\mu}g\;a.i.\;ml^{-1}$. Inhibition of mycelial growth rate (%) by three combine fungicides using the $EC_{50}$ value of each fungicide was the highest R. solani AG2-2IV. Results of this study were may confirmed in vitro response fungicide of three Rhizoctonia species for control of Rhizoctonia blight in the field.
Attempts were made to investigate the antagonistic activity of soil borne microorganisms Pseudomonas spp. and Trichoderma spp. against to the pathogens of turf diseases Rhizoctionia solani spp. and Pythiom spp. in vitro by a dual culture bioassay. Inhibition zone between the edge of the my-celium and the margin of each antagonistic bacteria, Pocudontonas, on potato dextrose agar was measured 3 days after incubation at 28˚C. Psudomonas spp. showed relatively high inhibition of mycelium growth of R. solani AG-i and Pythium spp. which cause brown patch and pythium blight, respectively. Antagonistic fungi Trichodenma spp. also showed effective inhibition against mycelium growth of both pathogens, more proper methods of measuring the inhibition effects were required because of fast growth of Trichodenna hypae. Brown patch and pythium blight both, re-quire most higher rate of fungicide use to control in golf curses in Korea. Application of antagon-istic microorganisms are useful as biological resources an approach to sole environmental contamination.

Trichoderma spp. are an effective control agent for damping-off or other plant diseases. The interaction between. T. hamatum and Rhizoctonia solani on the rhizosphere or surface soil were examined to assess the possible roles of antibiosis or competition in the mechanisms of biological control agents as a basic research. In a proportional comparison, total bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes and Trichoderma spp were 65%, 8.8%, 25.9% and 0.28% respectively in their distribution in the soil. Among Trichoderma spp isolated, the 5 species of Trichoderma spp were indentified as T. koninggii, T. pseudokoninggii, T. aureoviridi, T. hamatum and T. viride respectively. In a mycoparasitic test, one isolate of T. hamatum strain Tr-5 showed an enzymatic ability to break fungal hyphae into piecies and infected on the R. solani hyphae showing a parasitism. Spore germination of the all isolates of Trichoderma spp showed a 1.7-7.3% of germination in natural soil conditions, but the percentage was high in sterile soil indicating all the natural soil were fungistatic on conidia of Trichoderma spp. In rhizosphere competent assay in pea plant, the antagonistic T. hamatum, T. viride, T. koninggii, T. pseudokoninggii showed a colonizing upper soil depth in rhizosphere around 1-3 cm in root zone, but the colonizing ability was much reduced along the deeper the soil depth. Propagule density was decreased in deeper the soil layer. Disease development rate treated alone with plant pathogens, Fusarium solani, Rhizoctonia solani, Cylindrocarpon destructans increased, but disease incidence rate reduced in treatment with combinations with antagonistic T. hamatum strain Tr-5.
Morphological characteristics and pathogenicity of Rhizoctonia species causing blight diseases of turfgrasses were studied. The species were identified as Rhizoctonia cerealis Van der Hoeven, R. oryzae Ryker et Gooch, and R. solani $K{\ddot{u}hn}$ based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Isolates of R. solani were assigned to anastomosis groups (AG) with cultural type 1 (1A), 2-2 (IIIB), and 2-2 (IV). R. cerealis, R. oryzae and R. solani induced sheath rot and foliar blight symptoms on creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) and zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica). Inoculation tests showed that disease severity with isolates of R. cerealis and R. oryzae were more serious to creeping bentgrass than zoysiagrass. AG 1(1A) isolates of R. solani were strongly pathogenic on creeping bentgrass, but moderate to zoysiagrass. AG 2-2 (III) isolates were moderately pathogenic to zoysiagrass, but weakly to creeping bentgrass. AG 2-2 (IV) isolates from zoysiagrass were moderately pathogenic to zoysiagrass, but weakly to creeping bentgrass.

Biocontrol potential of an isolate of Helicosporium spp. against Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporium and Phytophthora drechsleri was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. A selected biocontrol agent designated as Helicosporium 0635BP strongly inhibited growth and lysed mycelium of Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporium on PDA. Autoclaved culture filtrate of the agent also completely inhibited growth of the turfgrass large patch pathogen, R. solani AG2-2 IV at the concentration of 50 ml $L^{-1}$. The pathogen was killed when dipped under the 20% filtrate for four hours or 50% for one hr. In a field trial, plots applied with the crude or times diluted culture filtrate showed 100% control efficacy of the turfgrass large patch as a chemical applied for a comparison. Results indicated that Helicosporium 0635BP is a promising biocontrol agent on control of the turfgrass large patch disease and its culture filtrate contained unknown heat suitable antifungal substance (s). Further studies on mass production, purification and identification of the unknown compound (s) are in progress for practical use.
174 isolates of soil microorganisms were isolated from E-golf club from Apr.1997 through Oct. 1997. And 27 strains of them were selected through the inhihition test of mycelial growth. In the same period, soil-borne diesease pathogens, "Rhizoctonia", causing Large patch, Brown patch, Spring dead spot, and Yellow patch were isolated from the diseased areas in E-golf and S-golf club. The antagonistic activity of the strains against the pathogens was tested to select the excel-lent antagonists. In contact with the fungicides, the survivability of the antagonists was tested to assess the compatibility of the antagonists with the pesticides. The results were as follows: 1.Suppression of Rhizoctonia by Antagonists. Antagonistic activity of 27 strains against the pathogens was: tested in vitro. In the result, 3 isolates(B-7, B-15, B-41) of bacteria and 2 isolates(F-5, F-47) of fungi were superior to the rest. 2.Compatibility of the antagonists: with the fungicides: With 13 kinds of pesticides widely using Golf Club, Compatibility of 5 antagonists: were finally tested to select the strains: that mostly survived in contact with pesticides. In the results:, two of five strains: were selected : one strain was bacteria B-15, the other strain was fungi F-47. 24h after the mixing with pesticides:, these two strains were shown to survive at 90% level and these were identified as Bacillus and Trichoderma, respectively. And the most compatible pesticides: with the antagonists were shown to Polytoxin-D thirarn(s:urvivability 99.4%) and Validamycin-A (survivability 98.6%). Keywords:Antagonist, Large Patch, Trichoderma, Compatibility, Fungicide.Fungicide.
Brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani AG1-1), dollar spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa), pythium blight (Pythium spp.), anthracnose (Colletotrichum graminicola), yellow patch (Rhizoctonia cerealis) and Zoysia patch (Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2) are the major turfgrasses diseases in Korea. In this study, 23 medicinal plant extracts were tested for antifungal activities against turfgrass pathogenic fungi. In paper disk diffusion method, 12 medicinal plant extracts, including Sophora flavescens, showed antifungal activity. Also, in the test of antifungal activity on media contained the extracts of S. flavescens, Curcuma longa, Rheum undulatum, Coptis chinensis and Asiasarum sieboldi showed above 80% inhibitory effects on the mycelial growth in 110 mg/10 ml concentration of the extracts. S. flavescens, in particularly, showed antifungal activity against the six turfgrass pathogenic fungi. The inhibition rate of S. homoeocarpa was 100% in 10 mg/10 ml, 5 mg/10 ml and 2 mg/10 ml concentrations of C. longa extract. In case of Pythium spp., the extracts of S. flavescens, R. undulatum and C. chinensis showed 100 % inhibition rate on the test media.

Streptomyces spp. were isolated from rhizosphere in fallow lands. The Streptomyces spp. were identified as Streptomyces griseus (MSS181), Streptomyces griseoaurantiacus (MSS269), Streptomyces microflavus (MSS275), Streptomyces herbaricolor (MSS276) based on 16S rRNA gene sequences. Afterwards, cucumber, pepper, tobacco and tomato were drenched with the isolates at early growth stages and plant growth such as height and dry weight of plants was measured. By treatment of Streptomyce spp., plant height of cucumber was increased by 16-29% compared to the control, But there were no statistically significant differences in dry weight. When the same isolates were treated on chili-pepper, plant height and dry weight of chili-pepper were increased respectively by 10-19% and 19-25% compared to the control. The dry weight of tobacco and tomato were increased by 44-73% and 65-165%, respectively compared to the control. When antifungal activities of the isolates were tested against plant pathogenic fungi, Streptomyces microflavus (MSS275) effectively inhibited the mycelial growth of Phytophthora capsici, Fusarium oxysporum, Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum.
