  • Performance characteristics of an axial flow fan having distorted inlet flow have been investigated using numerical analysis as well as experiment. Two kinds of hub-cap, round shape and right-angled front shape, are tested to investigate the effect of inlet flow distortion on the fan performance. In case of right-angled front shape, axisymmetric distorted inflow is induced by flow separation at the sharp edge of hub-cap, and the characteristics of the inflow depends on the distance between hub-cap and blade leading edge. Flow analysis of the blade passage is peformed by solving the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. numerical solutions are validated in comparison with experimental data measured by a five-hole probe downstream of the fan rotor. It is found from the numerical results that non-uniform axial inlet velocity profile near the hub results in the change of inlet flowangle. The changed inlet flow angle near the hub invokesa flow separation on the blade surfaces, thus deteriorating the fan efficiency. The effect of the distance between hub-cap and blade leading edge on the efficiency is also discussed.

  • The objective of present study is to assess the performance of the first stage compressor in a total 3-stage 5000 HP-level turbo compressor. CFD commercial code, CFX has been used to predict three-dimensional flow characteristics inside of the impeller. Shear Stress Transport (SST) model has been used to simulate turbulent flows through Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. Grid dependency has been also checked to get optimal grid distribution. Numerical results have been compared with the experimental test results to elucidate performance characteristics of the present compressor. In addition, flow characteristics of the impeller only have been studied for various blade configurations. Angular offset in leading edge of the blade has been selected for the optimal blade design. Performance characteristics in region of low mass flow rate and high pressure ratio between the impeller entrance and exit have been investigated for the selection of optimal blade design. Also, flow instability such as stall phenomena has been studied and anti-stall characteristics have been checked for various blade configurations in the operational window.

  • Experimental and numerical studies on the unsteady wake field behind a square cylinder near a wall were conducted to find out how the vortex shedding mechanism is correlated with gap flow. The computations were performed by solving unsteady 2-D Incompressible Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a newly developed ${\epsilon}-SST$ turbulence model for more accurate prediction of large separated flows. Through spectral analysis and the smoke wire flow visualization, it was discovered that velocity profiles in a gap region have strong influences on the formation of vortex shedding behind a square cylinder near a wall. From these results, Strouhal number distributions could be found, where the transition region of the Strouhal number was at $G/D=0.5{\sim}0.7$ above the critical gap height. The primary and minor shedding frequencies measured in this region were affected by the interaction between the upper and the lower separated shear layer, and minor shedding frequency was due to the separation bubble on the wall. It was also observed that the position (y/G) and the magnitude of maximum average velocity $(u/u_{\infty})$ in the gap region affect the regular vortex shedding as the gap height increases.

  • In a reciprocating compressor, highly impulsive pressure fluctuations induced by a reciprocating piston give rise to serious noise and vibration problems. A muffler is frequently used to reduce this impulsive noise, but also has adverse effects on compressor performance due to additional pressure drop and heat transfer of refrigerants through it. Therefore, the flow and acoustic performances of mufflers used in a compressor should be considered simultaneously. In this study, both of flow and acoustic performances of mufflers are investigated using computational fluid dynamic techniques by solving full three-dimensional compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. For validation purpose, the numerical method is initially applied to predict the transmission loss of a simple expansion muffler, and its predicted results show good agreements with theoretical and experimental results. Then, the flow and acoustic performances of an existing muffler is numerically investigated. On the basis of the analysis results, a new muffler is purposed and its performances are compared with the existing one. Improved performances of the new muffler are confirmed.

  • The effects of an apartment complex on flow and pollutant dispersion in an urban area are numerically investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model is based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and includes the renormalization group k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The geographic information system (GIS) data is used as an input data of the CFD model. Eight numerical simulations are carried out for different inflow directions and, for each inflow direction, the effects of an apartment complex are investigated, comparing the characteristics of flow and dispersion before and after construction of the apartment complex in detail. The observation data of automatic weather system (AWS) is analyzed. The windrose analysis shows that the wind speed and direction after the construction of the complex are quite different from those before the construction. The construction of the apartment complex resulted in the decrease in wind speed at the downwind region. It is also shown that the wind speed increased partially inside the apartment complex due to the channeling effect to satisfy the mass continuity. On the whole, the wind speed decreased at the downwind region due to the drag effect by the apartment complex. As a result, the passive pollutant concentration increased (decreased) near the downwind region of (within) the apartment complex compared with that before the construction.

  • This paper employs computational tools to investigate the cause of resistance reductions in calm water and waves of the sharp bow form compared to the blunt bow in 66,000 DWT bulk carriers. A more slender shape at the fore-shoulder without a bulbous bow is a prominent feature of the sharp bow. The blunt bow incorporates a bulbous shape. A two-phase unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved; and a realizable k-ε model has been applied for the turbulent closure. The free-surface is obtained by solving a VOF equation. The computational results have been validated with model tests carried out at a towing tank. The pressure component of resistance in the sharp bow is reduced by 8.9% in calm water, and 6.4-12.7% in regular head waves. The frictional components of resistance in the sharp and blunt bows are largely the same.

  • This study numerically carried out the propeller open water test(POW) by solving Navier-Stokes equations governing the three-dimensional unsteady incompressible viscous flow with the turbulence closure model of the ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model. Numerical simulations are performed at various range of advance ratios. Corresponding to Reynolds numbers of $5.89{\times}105{\sim}6.47{\times}105$ based on free stream velocity and the chord length at 0.7 propeller radius. The present results give a good agreement with those of the experiment. The propeller induced vortical structures have been analyzed by visualizing the resultant vorticity. As the advance ratio increases, the magnitude and length of the resultant vorticity decrease significantly. As the main focus of present study, the numerical model to present the ($r-{\theta}$) plane-averaged resultant vorticity along the streamwise direction for various advance ratios has been suggested.

  • This paper presents a systematic procedure for three-dimensional noise analysis of an axial-flow fan by using computational aero-acoustics based on Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. Flow-fields of a basic fan model are simulated by solving three-dimensional, unsteady, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the commercial code ANSYS CFX 11.0. Starting with steady flow results, unsteady flow analysis is performed to extract the fluctuating pressures in the time domain at specified local points on the blade surface of the axial flow fan. The perturbed density wave by rotating blades reaches at the observer position, which is simulated by an in-house noise prediction software based on Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. The detailed far-field noise signatures from the axial-flow fan are analyzed in terms of source types, field characteristics, and interpolation schemes.

  • This work presents numerical results, using OpenFOAM, of the flow in the swirl flow generator test rig developed at Politehnica University of Timisoara, Romania. The work shows results computed by solving the unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations. The unsteady method couples the rotating and stationary parts using a sliding grid interface based on a GGI formulation. Turbulence is modeled using the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model, and block structured wall function ICEM-Hexa meshes are used. The numerical results are validated against experimental LDV results, and against design velocity profiles. The investigation shows that OpenFOAM gives results that are comparable to the experimental and design profiles. The unsteady pressure fluctuations at four different positions in the draft tube is recorded. A Fourier analysis of the numerical results is compared whit that of the experimental values. The amplitude and frequency predicted by the numerical simulation are comparable to those given by the experimental results, though slightly over estimated.
