The computations of the turbulent flow around the ship models with the free-surface effects were carried out. Incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved by using an explicit finite-difference method with the nonstaggered grid system. The method employed second-order finite differences for the spatial discretization and a four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the temporal integration. For the turbulence closure, a modified Baldwin-Lomax model was exploited. The location of the free surface was determined by solving the equation of the kinematic free-surface condition using the Lax-Wendroff scheme and a free-surface conforming grid was generated at each time step so that one of the grid boundary surfaces always coincides with the free surface. An inviscid approximation of the dynamic free-surface boundary condition was applied as the boundary conditions for the velocity and pressure on the free surface. To validate the computational method developed in the present study, the computations were carried out for beth Wigley and Series 60 $C_B=0.6$ ship model and the computational results showed good agreements with the experimental data.
Immersed boundary-Lattice Boltzmann Method (IB-LBM) is used for the analysis of flow over the circular cylinder in the concept of fluid-structure interaction analysis (FSI). Recently, IB-LBM has shown the enormous possibility for the application of various biomedical engineering fields, such as the movement of a human body or the behavior of the blood cells and/or particle-based drug delivery system in blood vessels. In order for the numerical analysis of the interaction between fluid and solid object, immersed boundary method and lattice Boltzmann method are coupled to analyze the flow over a cylinder for low Reynolds laminar flow (Re=10, 20, 40 and 100) with Zhu-He boundary condition at the boundary. With the developed IB-LBM, the flow around the cylinder in the uniform flow is analyzed for the laminar flow and the drag and lift coefficients and recirculation length are compared to the previous results.
The turbulent flow with wake, reattachment and recirculation is a very important problem that is related to vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics. The Smagorinsky Model (SM), the Dynamics Subgrid Scale Model (DSM), and the Lagrangian Dynamic Subgrid Scale Model (LDSM) are used to predict the three-dimensional flow field around a bluff body model. The Reynolds number used is 45,000 based on the bulk velocity and the height of the bluff body. The fully developed turbulent flow, which is generated by the driver part, is used for the inlet boundary condition. The Convective boundary condition is imposed on the outlet boundary condition, and the Spalding wall function is used for the wall boundary condition. We compare the results of each model with the results of the PIV measurement. First of all, the LES predicts flow behavior better than the k-$\xi$ turbulence model. When ew compare various LES models, the DSM and the LDSM agree with the PIV experimental data better than the SM in the complex flow, with the separation and the reattachment at the upper front part of th bluff body. But in the rear part of the bluff body, the SM agrees with the PIV experimental results better than them. In this case, the SM predicts overall flow behavior better than the DSM nd the LDSM.
A computer code has been developed for the computation of the viscous flow around a ship model with the free surface. In this code, the incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically by a finite difference method which employes second-order finite differences for the spatial discretization and a four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the temporal integration of the governing equations. For the turbulence closure, a modified version of the Baldwin-Lomax model is exploited. The location of the free surface is determined by solving the equation of the kinematic free-surface condition using the Lax-Wendroff scheme and the boundary-fitted grid is generated at each time step so that one of the grid surfaces always coincides with the free surface. An inviscid approximation of the dynamic free-surface boundary condition is applied as the boundary conditions for the velocity and pressure on the free surface. To validate the computational method and the computer code developed in the present study, the numerical computations are carried out for both Wigley parabolic hull and Series 60 $C_B=0.6$ ship model and the computational results are compared with the experimental data.
We present a three-dimensional average flow model considering elastic deformation of pad asperities for chemical mechanical planarization. To consider the contact deformation of pad asperities in the calculation of the flow factor, three-dimensional contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions is conducted from computer generated three dimensional roughness data. The average Reynolds equation and the boundary condition of both force and momentum balance are used to investigate the effect of pad roughness and external pressure conditions on film thickness and wafer position angle.
For the accurate run-out of a light rotor shaft the sliding bearings supplied with externally pressurized air are effectively applied, and it is important to predict the static and dynamic characteristics of rotor-bearing system. In this study direct numerical method is applied to solve the perturbed Reynolds' equation. To solve it the perturbed dimensionless mass flow rate is used as the boundary condition under the inherently-compensated restrictor. The dynamic characteristics of a rotor supported in the externally pressurized air bearings are analyzed, and as a result the orbit of the journal center is calculated. The theoretical results are investigated and discussed.

Existing conventional model for analysis of shallow water flow just assumed the internal boundary condition as free-slip, which resulted in the wrong prediction about the velocity, vorticity, water level, shear stress distribution, and time variation of drag and lift force around a structure. In this study, a finite element model that can predict flow characteristics around the structure accurately was developed and internal boundary conditions were generalized as partial slip condition using slip length concept. Laminar flow characteristics behind circular cylinder were analyzed by varying the internal boundary conditions. The simulation results of (1) time variations of longitudinal and transverse velocities, and vorticity; (2) wake length; (3) vortex shedding phenomena by slip length; (4) and mass conservation showed that the vortex shedding had never observed and laminar flow like creeping motion was occurred under free-slip condition. Assignment of partial slip condition changed the velocity distribution on the cylinder surface and influenced the magnitude of the shear stress and the occurrence of vorticity so that the period of vortex shedding was reduced compared with the case of no slip condition. The maximum mass conservation error occurred in the case of no slip condition, which had the value of 0.73%, and there was 0.21 % reduction in the maximum mass conservation error by changing the internal boundary condition from no slip to partial slip condition.

This paper proposes a method to calculate the stiffness and the damping coefficients of the coupled journal and thrust bearings. The Reynolds equations and their perturbation equations are transformed to the finite element equations by considering the continuity of pressure and flow at the interface between bearings. The Reynolds boundary condition is used in the numerical analysis to simulate the cavitation phenomena. The dynamic coefficients of the proposed method are compared with those of the numerical differentiation of the loads with respect to finite displacements and velocities of bearing center. It shows that the proposed method is more accurate and efficient than the differentiation method.

An experimental study was performed to examine the heat transfer performance of individual rows of fin-tube heat exchangers. The heat transfer performance was measured using air-enthalpy type calorimeter. The examined heat exchangers consists of $7{\Phi}$ tube and fin patterns of them are slit and louver types. Equivalent fin spacing are 18 FPI for all samples, and the number of tube rows were 2. In order to confirm that thermal boundary condition on fins of each row are the same, physically separated between two rows as well as connected heat exchangers were used. The frontal air velocity varied from 0.7 to 2.5 m/s. Heat transfer performance for each row are measured. It was observed that the heat transfer coefficient of the 2nd row were smaller than that of the 1st row at low Reynolds number while larger at high Reynolds number.
