  • One of the fundamental roles of web object navigation is to support what the user wants precisely and efficiently from the enormous web database to the web browser. As long as the web search results are a set of individual lists, it is all right to display each and every web result for the web browser to display a web object one by one. However, in case the search results are a collection of multiple interrelated web objects, then there is a need to represent for a new mechanism for linked web objects at a time. We define a unit of web objects derived from a Steiner tree where the web objects include a set of specific keywords calculated by the weight from which the solutions are extracted. Even if a web object does not include all the keywords, then the related hypertext linked web objects are derived and displayed onto the mobile web browser with meta data in one shot. In this paper, it is applied for the mobile browser that the web contents can dynamically be displayed with Steiner trees until each renewal of the navigation request may be issued. In this paper, a new synchronized mobile browsing method is developed so that the navigating time can drastically be reduced and the web navigating efficiency can be dramatically enhanced without sacrificing memory consumption.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the document delivery service(DDS) of the academic libraries and suggest its improvement model in Korea. DDS means providing copies of information requests in any format and from any source. And DDS is gaining in importance as libraries turn to 'just-in-time' access rather than 'just-in-case' collection to meet user information needs. By good fortune, rising journal subscription prices, declining financial resources, canceling some of journal subscriptions, electronic transmission technologies, and the rise of commercial document delivery services have allowed libraries to begin to deliver articles to users in a much more rapid and acceptable time frame. Therefore, the library paradigm for the 2000s must be the creation of new document delivery structures which capitalize on the access tolls and structures created by librarians during the past generations. First of all, library-based document service requires a close review of existing library-to-library delivery mechanisms, application of technology to transfer of facsimiles of materials and facilitated use of existing fee-based document sources. The ideal document delivery system would feature a transparent, seamless electronic service incorporating searching and browsing identification and marking of desired items, and transmission and fulfillment of requests. And requested items would be supplied from library collection, commercial suppliers, or other sources. But the future of DDS will succeed when physical resources, policies, personnel, and practices are organized to provide timely information delivery to users.

  • A knowledge portal is an integrated gateway for accessing relevant knowledge, collaborating and communicating with other users, and also linking internal applications which is becoming crucial in the age of information abundance. Research and development is a typical knowledge-intensive activity. However, knowledge management support in R&D has been minimal in most research organizations. In this paper, a knowledge portal is designed to support team-based researches in science and technology for searching and browsing knowledge, and also communicating with other team members, coordinating research project and collaborating with other researchers. Automating knowledge acquisition from various knowledge sources, knowledge categorization by applying text categorization method, and knowledge recommendation can help to relieve management effort and increase the efficiency of knowledge management processes. A prototype system based on the suggested model is also presented.

  • This study examined activities involving the finding, organizing, managing, and re-finding of information by knowledge workers in Kuwait. This research also conducted a review of the tools needed for effective personal information management (PIM) and assessed perceptions about improving PIM through Internet use. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted among 26 graduates of the Department of Information Studies at Kuwait University. These participants are currently employed in different sectors engaged in a variety of information-related activities. This study's findings indicated that participants gathered different types of information from a variety of sources. This information was stored using several devices and services, including desktop computers, shared drives, clouds, bookmarked websites, e-mail correspondence, and favorites lists. Participants organized information in personal folders according to categories such as subject/topic, time, project, document type, and geographical region. Preferred methods for information re-finding included searching by keyword and browsing through folders. Interviewees reported problems of information overload, fragmentation, and anxiety. Most were active in social media via mobile device, while some of them used Siri or Ask Google to retrieve information. Tools used for PIM included calendars, tasks, schedules, e-mail management tools, clouds, and social networking tools. Participants reported that the Internet helped with personal information management practices, but that some privacy issues arose in this context.

  • With the rapid change of the Web and E-transaction application, the search interface is providing more powerful search and visualization methods, while offering smoother integration of technology with task. Especially, visualization techniques for long menu-lists are applied in retrieval system with the goal of improving performance in user's ability to select one item from a long list. In order to review visualization techniques appropriate to the types of users and data set, this study compared the five visualization browsers such as the Tree-structured menu, the Table-of-contents menu, the Roll-over menu, the Click menu, and Fisheye menu. The result of general analyses shows that among the hierarchical methods, the experienced group prefers the Table-of-contents method menu, whereas the novice's group prefers the Tree-structure method menu. Among the linear methods, the two groups prefer the Roll-over menu. The Roll-over menu is most preferred among the five browsers by the two groups.

  • With the ongoing development of next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms and advancements in the latest bioinformatics tools at an unprecedented pace, the ultimate goal of sequencing the human genome for less than $1,000 can be feasible in the near future. The rapid technological advances in NGS have brought about increasing demands for statistical methods and bioinformatics tools for the analysis and management of NGS data. Even in the early stages of the commercial availability of NGS platforms, a large number of applications or tools already existed for analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing NGS data. However, the availability of this plethora of NGS data presents a significant challenge for storage, analyses, and data management. Intrinsically, the analysis of NGS data includes the alignment of sequence reads to a reference, base-calling, and/or polymorphism detection, de novo assembly from paired or unpaired reads, structural variant detection, and genome browsing. While the NGS technologies have allowed a massive increase in available raw sequence data, a number of new informatics challenges and difficulties must be addressed to improve the current state and fulfill the promise of genome research. This review aims to provide an overview of major NGS technologies and bioinformatics tools for NGS data analyses.

  • A recent interesting user experience in social curation websites is that they often encounter unanticipated, valuable information through accidental, incidental, or serendipitous discoveries. Prior research suggests that serendipity can help solve a problem, generate a creative idea, and invent a new product because it allows for an intellectual leap to arrive at a novel insight that is suddenly instrumental to a task. Despite the significant roles, the notion of serendipity is relatively unexplored especially in the context where people actually experience it, such as social curation websites. In this study, we theoretically identified the key technological features of social curation websites, which support three major curation activities respectively: browsing, collection, and interaction. We then examined their impacts on the occurrence of serendipitous discoveries in the process of information seeking. Our results using data collected from real users reveal that the technological features all affected user experience of serendipity and the interaction feature has stronger impacts than the other two. Moreover, it was also found that user experience of serendipity significantly affected website usage behavior such as intention to return and intention to contribute to the website.
