  • In this work the mechanical behaviors of GaN nanowires are analyzed during tension, compression, and unloading deformations. The thermal conductivity of the nanowires at each deformed state is evaluated using an equilibrium Green-Kubo approach. Under tensile loading, the [0001]-oriented nanowires with hexagonal cross-sections undergo a phase transformation from wurtzite to a tetragonal structure. The phase transformation is not observed under compressive loading. The thermal conductivity decreases on going from compressive strains to tensile strains. The strain dependence of the thermal conductivity results from the relaxation time of phonon. A reverse transformation from the tetragonal structure to the wurtzite structure is observed during unloading. The thermal conductivities in the intermediate states are lower than the conductivity in the wurtzite structure at same strain. Such differences in the thermal conductivity between different atomic structures are mainly due to changes in the group velocity of phonon.

  • Existing Systems need to be modified due to the change of environment, the emergence of new technology and the requirement of change. One of the features of system transformation is how functions of the old system is preserved in the transformed system after reverse-engineering. But, the techniques to evaluate and verigy the transformed system have proceeded more partially and fragmentarily. In this paper, we have proposed the functional coverage and developed the tool and techniques for verifying functional euivalence between a procedural software and a transformed object-oriented software. The tool and methods are efficiently used to verigy whehter the transformed program preserves the same functionality as the existing program.

  • The effect of an AlN additive on the thermoelectric properties of SiC ceramics was studied. Porous SiC ceramics with 48-54% relative density were fabricated by sintering the pressed ${\alpha}-SiC$ powder compacts with AlN at $2100-2200^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in an Ar atmosphere. In the undoped specimens, the Seebeck coefficients were positive (p-type semiconducting) possibly due to a dominant effect of the acceptor impurities (Al, Fe) contained in the starting powder. With AlN addition, the reverse phase transformation of 6H-SiC to 4H-SiC was observed during the sintering process. The electrical conductivity of the AlN doped specimen was larger than that of the undoped specimen under the same conditions, which might be due to a reverse phase trans-formation. The Seebeck coefficient of the AlN doped specimen was also larger than that of the undoped specimen. The density of specimen and the amount of addition had significant effects on the thermoelectric properties.

  • Lecithin self-assembles into reverse spherical micelles in organic solvents as an amphiphilic molecule. When additives such as bile salts and water are introduced into lecithin solutions, it induces structural changes in the molecular form of lecithin, leading to the transformation into reverse cylindrical micelles. In this study, we observe the rheological changes of lecithin/bile salt mixtures in a decane system after the addition of water. The resulting mixtures exhibit high viscosity and characteristics of viscoelasticity, suggesting potential applications in various fields such as drug delivery and edible oil gels.

  • Establishment of immortalized human dermal papilla cells (DPCs) retaining the characteristics of DPCs would be a great help for hair researchers. We recently established a simian virus 40T (SV40T)-transformed human DP cell line (SV40TDPC). However, the cell line senesced around passage 25 and ceased proliferation. In this study, we introduced the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene into SV40T-DPC and established an immortalized human DP cell line. The cell line, SV40T-hTERT-DPC, did not induce tumors when inoculated into nude mice. SV40T-hTERT-DPC maintained morphology of early passage DPCs, expressed markers of DPCs, and retained responses to Wnt/${\beta}$-catenin and bone morphogenic protein (BMP) signaling pathways known to be required for hair-inducing activity of DPCs. The data strongly suggest that SV40T-hTERT-DPC retains many characteristics of human DPCs in vivo without malignant transformation.

  • Advances in Information Technology and in Biomedicine have created new uses for CAD technology with many novel and important biomedical applications. Such applications can be found, for example, in the design and modeling of orthopedics, medical implants, and tissue modeling in which CAD can be used to describe the morphology, heterogeneity, and organizational structure of tissue and anatomy. CAD has also played an important role in computer-aided tissue engineering for biomimetic design, analysis, simulation and freeform fabrication of tissue scaffolds and substitutes. And all the applications require precision geometry of the organs or bones of each patient. But the geometry information currently used is polygon model with none solid geometry and is so rough that it cannot be utilized for accurate analysis, simulation and fabrication. Therefore a case study is performed to deduce a transformation method to build free form surface from a rough polygon data or medical images currently used in the application. This paper describes the transformation procedure in detail and the considerations for accurate organ modeling are discussed.

  • Terpenoids have a wide range of biological functions and have extensive applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and flavoring industry. The white-rot fungus, Polyporus brumalis, is able to synthesize terpenoids via terpene synthase, which catalyzes an important step that forms a large variety of sesquiterpene products from farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP). To improve the production of sesquiterpenes, the terpene synthase gene was isolated from Polyporus brumalis and was heterologously transformed into a Pichia pastoris strain. The open reading frame of the isolated gene (approximately 1.2 kb) was inserted into Pichia pastoris to obtain a recombinant enzyme. Five transformants were obtained and the expression of terpene synthase was analyzed at the transcript level by reverse transcription PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and at the protein level by SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis). Expression of the terpene synthase gene product was elevated in the transformants and as expected the molecular weight of the protein was approximately 45 kDa. These recombinant enzymes have potential practical applications and future studies should focus on their functional characterization.

  • Porous SiC ceramics were proposed to be promising materials for high-temperature thermoelectric energy conversion. Throughthe thermoelectric property measurements and microstructure observations on the porous alpha SiC and the mixture of $\alpha$-and $\beta$-SiC, it was experimentally clarified that elimination of stacking faults and twin boundaries by grain growth is effective to increase the seebeck coefficient and increasing content of $\alpha$-SiC gives rise to lower electrical conductivity. Furthermore, the effects of additives on the thermoelectric properties of 6H-SiC ceramics were also studied. The electrical conductivity and the seebeck coefficient were measured at 35$0^{\circ}C$ to 105$0^{\circ}C$ in argon atmospehre. The thermoelectric conversion efficiency of $\alpha$-SiC ceramics was lower than that of $\beta$-SiC ceramics. The phase homogeneity would be needed to improve the seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity decreased with increasing the content of $\alpha$-phase. In the case of B addition, XRD analysis showed that the phase transformation did not occur during sintering. On the other hand, AlN addiiton enhanced the reverse phase transformation from 6H-SiC to 4H-SiC, and this phenomenon had a great effect upon the electrical conductivity.

  • In this work, a new way of measuring the volume fraction of e martensite in Fe-based alloys has been proposed. Since the specific volume of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, depending on alloy composition, is smaller than that of austenite i.e ${\gamma}$ phase, volume expansion takes place during ${\varepsilon}{\rightarrow}{\gamma}$ reverse transformation. As the amount of the volume expansion is proportional to the product of specific volume difference times the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite can be calculated by measuring the volume expansion and the specific volume difference. Such a relationship was confirmed in Fe-21Mn and Fe-32Mn-6Si alloys which undergo ${\gamma}{\rightarrow}{\varepsilon}$ martensitic transformation on cooling and by cold rolling, respectively. It was also found that the former has isotropic ${\varepsilon}$ martensite while the latter has anisotropic ${\varepsilon}$ martensite.

  • Robinia pseudoacacia var. umbraculifera, commonly called umbrella black locust were regenerated after co-cultivation of internode segments with Agrobacterium tumefaciens which included yeast cadmium factor 1 (YCF 1) gene. The tolerance to cadmium and lead for plants can be increased by the YCF1 gene expression. Moreover, the recent studies have shown that YCF1 gene transgenic plants increase the accumulation of cadmium and lead into plant vacuoles. The effect of plant growth regulator such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), ${\alpha}$-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), 6-benzyladenine (BA), and thidiazuron (TDZ) were studied to evaluate the propagation of plants through internode explants. The efficient induction of multiple adventitious shoots and callus were observed on a medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/L TDZ + 0.2 mg/L BA. To induce shoot elongation and rooting, regenerated shoots were transferred into basal MS medium without any plant growth regulator. Successful Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated transformation was obtained by 20 min vacuum-infiltration with $50{\mu}M$ acetosyringone on the optimal multiple shoot induction medium with 30 mg/L hygromycin and 300 mg/L cefotaxime. To confirm the integration and expression of transgene, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Reverse Transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) were performed with specific primers. The frequency of transformation was approximately 18.94%. This study can be used to genetic engineering of phytoremediator.
