  • In combined forward-backward extrusion with controlled forward speed by a counter punch, accurate parts with forward rod can be formed. As an extension of this method, reverse extrusion is proposed, in which the extruded forward rod is pushed back while the main punch is kept at the final position after the forward-backward extrusion process. The experiment is carried out using lead as a model material. With the reverse extrusion method, longer forward rods can be formed without under-filling defect than that by combined extrusion with controlling extrusion speed.

  • In an application of a time reversal(TR) focusing of array transducer on a defect inside the test material, we employ a new time delay focusing technique based the TR process. In order to realize this idea, a multi-channel ultrasonic system is constructed capable of applying necessary time delays to each channel. The TR-based focusing procedure first measures the backscattered signals after firing one of the array elements. A phase slope method is then used to determine the time-of-flights of the backscattered signals received by all elements of the array. These time delays are used to adjust the time of excitation of the elements for transmission focusing on the defect. In addition to the TR focusing, the classical phased array focusing is also considered for comparison. Experimental results show that the TR-based time delay focusing produces much stronger backscattered signals than the phased array focusing, demonstrating the enhanced capability of the TR focusing.

  • The HVDC transformer which is one of the main equipments for HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) electric power transmission systems is exposed to not only AC voltage but also the inflowing DC voltage which comes from the DC-AC converter systems. Therefore, the HVDC transformer insulation system is required to withstand the electric field stress under AC, DC and DC polarity reversal conditions. However the electric field distributions under those conditions are different because the AC electric field and DC electric field are governed by permittivity and conductivity, respectively. In this study, the changes of electric potential and electric field of conventional AC transformer insulation system under DC polarity reversal test condition were analyzed by FEM(Finite Element Method). The DC electric field stress was concentrated in the solid insulators while the AC electric field stress was concentrated in the mineral oil. In addition, the electric stress under that condition which is affected by the surface charge accumulation at the interfaces between insulators was evaluated. The stress in some parts could be higher than that of AC and DC condition, during polarity reversal test. The result of this study would be helpful for the HVDC transformer insulation system design.

  • To study the magnetization reversal behavior of Co/Pd multilayers, we first demagnetized the samples by the field-demagnetized method and then measured initial curves and minor loops. The coercivity and the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were obtained from the perpendicular and parallel magnetization curves measured at different temperatures. We interpret our experimental results by applying several qualitative and semiquantative approaches. From these study, we found that the magnetization reversal behavior is dominated by the domain wall pinning for all samples and the coercivity incremental tendency can be explained by Kronmuller's formula $H_c(T)\;{\propto}\;r_0.K_u$.

  • It is essential to monitor the working conditions of bolt-connected joints, which are widely used in various kinds of steel structures. The looseness of bolts may directly affect the stability and safety of the entire structure. In this study, a guided wave-based method for bolt looseness detection and localization is presented for a joint structure with multiple bolts. SH waves generated and received by a small number (two pairs) of magnetostrictive transducers were used. The bolt looseness index was proposed based on the changes in the reconstructed responses excited by the time reversal signals of the measured unit impulse responses. The damage locations and local damage severities were estimated using the damage indices from several wave propagation paths. The back propagation neural network (BPNN) technique was employed to identify the local damages. Numerical and experimental studies were conducted on a lap joint with eight bolts. The results show that the total damage severity can be successfully detected under the effect of external force and measurement noise. The local damage severity can be estimated reasonably for the experimental data using the BPNN constructed by the training patterns generated from the finite element simulations.

  • Various techniques for noninvasively focus microwave energy on lesions have been proposed for thermotherapy. To focus the microwave energy on the lesion, a focusing parameter, which is referred to as the magnitude and phase of microwaves radiated from an external array antenna, is very important. Although the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD)-based time-reversal (TR) focusing algorithm is widely used, it has a long processing time if the focusing target position changes or if optimization is needed. We propose a technique to obtain multistatic data (MSD) based on Green's function and use it to derive the focusing parameters. Computer simulations were used to evaluate the electric fields inside the object using the FDTD method and Green's function as well as to compare the focusing parameters using FDTD- and MSD-based TR focusing algorithms. Regardless of the use of Green's function, the processing time of MSD-based TR focusing algorithms reduces to approximately 1/2 or 1/590 compared with the FDTD-based algorithm. In addition, we optimize the focusing parameters to eliminate hotspots, which are unnecessary focusing positions, by adding phase-reversed electric fields and confirm hotspot suppression through simulations.

  • This paper describes a three-probe system that can be used to measure the parallelism and straightness of a pair of rails simultaneously. The parallelism is measured using a modified reversal method, while the straightness is measured using a sequential two-point method. The measurement algorithms were analyzed numerically using a pair of functionally defined rails to validate the three-probe system. Tests were also performed on a pair of straightedge rails with a length of 250 mm and a maximum straightness deviation of $0.05{\mu}m$, as certified by the supplier. The experimental results demonstrated that the parallelism-measurement algorithm had a cancellation effect on the probe stage motion error. They also confirmed that the proposed system could measure the slope of a pair of rails about $0.06{\mu}rad$. Therefore, by combining this technique with a sequential differential method to measure the straightness of the rails simultaneously, the surface profiles could be determined accurately and eliminate the stage error. The measured straightness deviation of each straight edge was less than $0.05{\mu}m$, consistent with the certified value.

  • In this paper, we propose a bi-directional coding method (BTC) using time reversal mirror for effective data exchange between mobile stations and basestations. In conventional relay systems, while one node transmits data, other nodes should keep silent to avoid interference. Thus, to interchange data between basestations and mobile stations, it needs four stages. However, using the proposed BTC method, a relay station transmits a probe source before data transmission, and using this information, mobile stations and basestations transmit data to the relay station simultaneously. Therefore, since it exchanges data in only two steps, the system achieves improved system capacity. In addition, owing to no need for complex calculation, the relay system can be implemented with low complexity. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves enhanced system capacity.
