  • The EST Knowledge Integrated System, EKIS (http://ekis.kribb.re.kr), was established as a part of Korea's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology initiative for genome sequencing and application research of the biological model organisms (GEAR) project. The goals of the EKIS are to collect EST information from GEAR projects and make an integrated database to provide transcriptomic and metabolomic information for biological scientists. The EKIS constitutes five independent categories and several retrieval systems in each category for incorporating massive EST data from high-throughput sequencing of 65 different species. Through the EKIS database, scientists can freely access information including BLAST functional annotation as well as Genechip and pathway information for KEGG. By integrating complex data into a framework of existing EST knowledge information, the EKIS provides new insights into specialized metabolic pathway information for an applied industrial material.

  • Defense Modeling and Simulation aims to provide a computerized war environment where we can analyze weapon systems realistically. As we invest significant efforts to represent weapon systems and their operational environments on the computer, there has been an increasing need to reuse predefined weapon models. In this paper, we introduce OB-Cloud (Ontology-Based Cloud storage) to utilize predefined weapon models. OB-Cloud has been implemented as a repository for OpenSIM (Open Simulation engine for Interoperable Models), which is an integrated simulation environment for aiding weapons effectiveness analysis, under the development of our research team. OB-Cloud uses weapon ontology and thesaurus dictionaries to provide semantic search for reusable models. In this paper, we present repository services of OB-Cloud, including registration of weapon models and semantic retrieval of similar models, and illustrate how we can improve reusability of weapon models, through an example.

  • As the number of document resources is continuously increasing, automatically extracting keyphrases from a document becomes one of the main issues in recent days. However, most previous works have tried to extract keyphrases from words in documents, so they overlooked latent keyphrases which did not appear in documents. Although latent keyphrases do not appear in documents, they can undertake an important role in text summarization and information retrieval because they implicate meaningful concepts or contents of documents. Also, they cover more than one fourth of the entire keyphrases in the real-world datasets and they can be utilized in short articles such as SNS which rarely have explicit keyphrases. In this paper, we propose a new approach that selects candidate keyphrases from the keyphrases of neighbor documents which are similar to the given document and evaluates the importance of the candidates with the individual words in the candidates. Experiment result shows that latent keyphrases can be extracted at a reasonable level.

  • The information systems in the most enterprise environments are distributed locally and are comprised with various heterogeneous data sources, so that it is difficult to obtain necessary and integrated information for supporting user decision. For solving 'this problems efficiently, it provides uniform interface to users and constructed database systems between heterogeneous systems make a consistence each independence and need to provide transparency like one interface. This paper presents XMDR that consists of category, standard ontology, location ontology and knowledge base. Standard ontology solves heterogeneous problem about naming, attributes, relations in data expression. Location ontology is a mediator that connects each legacy systems. Knowledge base defines the relation for sharing glossary. Adaptive retrieve proposes integrated retrieve system through reflecting site weight by location ontology, information sharing of various forms of knowledge base and integration and propose conceptual domain model about how to share unstructured knowledge.

  • In this paper, a database interface system with natural language dialogue is designed and implemented. The system is made up of language analysis, context processing, dialogue processing and DB processing unit. The method for classifying and processing an undefined word in language analysis is proposed. It reduces the dictionary size, which gives difficulties in DB Interface. And the current DB Interfaces dealt with an input utterance independently. But the system in this paper provides a user with the interface environment in which he or she can have a continuous conversation with the system and retrieve DB information. Thus in this paper, speech acts which include user's inattentions well as propositional contents are defined, and user action hierarchical model for library DB retrieval is constructed. And the system uses the defined knowledge to recognize-user's plan, effectively understanding and managing the ongoing dialogue. And the system is implemented in the domain of library database in order to prove the proposed methods in this paper.

  • Interoperability and collaborations have become essential factors for developing a digital library. TEL, the European Library, is a new Pan-European service which gives access to the combined resources of the national libraries in Europe, and also TEL is the name of a project to implement TEL service. The vision of TEL stems from the characteristics that the national libraries offer, which is the comprehensiveness of collection, the national libraries' holdings of outstanding historical and special collection, reliability of information and high quality. Moreover, the national libraries are in a unique position to invest in creating added value to the digitized documents and to show the cultural diversity between EU members. From the viewpoint of digital library techniques, TEL explored some advanced methodologies to guarantee the interoperability between heterogenious collections and libraries. In this study, we examine the development of TEL including publisher relations, metadata developments, and retrieval features.

  • Multi-view learning considers data from various viewpoints as well as attempts to integrate various information from data. Multi-view learning has been studied recently and has showed superior performance to a model learned from only a single view. With the introduction of deep learning techniques to a multi-view learning approach, it has showed good results in various fields such as image, text, voice, and video. In this study, we introduce how multi-view learning methods solve various problems faced in human behavior recognition, medical areas, information retrieval and facial expression recognition. In addition, we review data integration principles of multi-view learning methods by classifying traditional multi-view learning methods into data integration, classifiers integration, and representation integration. Finally, we examine how CNN, RNN, RBM, Autoencoder, and GAN, which are commonly used among various deep learning methods, are applied to multi-view learning algorithms. We categorize CNN and RNN-based learning methods as supervised learning, and RBM, Autoencoder, and GAN-based learning methods as unsupervised learning.

  • An Automated Industry and Occupation Coding System assigns statistical classification code to the enormous amount of natural language data collected from people who write about their industry and occupation. Unlike previous studies that applied information retrieval, we propose a system that does not need an index database and gives proper code regardless of the level of classification. Also, we show our model, which utilized KoBERT that achieves high performance in natural language downstream tasks with deep learning, outperforms baseline. Our method achieves 95.65%, 91.51%, and 97.66% in Occupation/Industry Code Classification of Population and Housing Census, and Industry Code Classification of Census on Basic Characteristics of Establishments. Moreover, we also demonstrate future improvements through error analysis in the respect of data and modeling.

  • We analyzed the high-resolution wind data of Aircraft-Based Observation from the Mode-Selective Enhanced Surveillance (Mode-S EHS) data in Korea. For assessment of its quality, the Mode-S wind data was compared with the ECMWF ReAnalysis 5 (ERA5) reanalysis and Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR) data for more than 3-months from 7 May 2021 to 24 August 2021 near Incheon International Airport, Korea. Considering that the AMDAR reports are not provided by all commercial aircraft, total number of the Mode-S derived wind data with a second sampling rate was about twice larger than that of available AMDAR wind data. After the quality control procedures by removing erroneous samples, it was found that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the Mode-S retrieved winds are similar to that from the AMDAR winds. In particular, between 550 and 650 hPa levels, RMSE of the Mode-S (AMDAR) zonal wind against ERA5 data was about 2.3 m s-1 (1.9 m s-1), and those increased to 3.3 m s-1 (2.4 m s-1) in 200~500 hPa levels. A similar trend was found in the meridional wind, but a distinct positive mean bias of 2.16 m s-1 was observed between 875 and 1,000 hPa levels. Winds retrieved from the Mode-S also showed a good agreement directly with AMDAR data. As the Mode-S provides a large amount of data with a reliable quality, it can be useful for both data assimilation in the numerical weather prediction model and situational awareness of wind and turbulence for aviation safety in Korea.

  • This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of retrieved horizontal winds with different quality control methods from three Doppler lidars deployed over the complex terrain during the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic games. To retrieve the accurate wind profile, this study also proposes two quality control methods to distinguish between meteorological signals and noises in the Doppler velocity field, which can be broadly applied to different Doppler lidars. We evaluated the accuracy of retrieved winds with the wind measurements from the nearby or collocated rawinsondes. The retrieved wind speed and direction show a good agreement with rawinsonde with a correlation coefficient larger than 0.9. This study minimized the sampling error in the wind evaluation and estimation, and found that the accuracy of retrieved winds can reach ~0.6 m s-1 and 3° in the quasi-homogeneous wind condition. We expect that the retrieved horizontal winds can be used in the high-resolution analysis of the horizontal winds and provide an accurate wind profile for model evaluation or data assimilation purposes.
