Design optimization of a transonic compressor rotor(NASA rotor 37) was carried out using response surface method(RSM) which is one of the optimization methods. A numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes(RANS) equations. Response surfaces that were based on the results of the design of experiment(DOE) techniques were used to find an optimal shape of blade which has the maximum aerodynamic performance. Two objective functions, viz., the adiabatic efficiency and the loss coefficient were selected with three design configurations to optimize the blade shape. As a result, the efficiency of the optimized blade is found to be increased.
This paper deals with the design process for an outer-rotor-type surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) used in continuous variable valve timing (CVVT) systems in automobiles with internal combustion engines. When the same size, outer-rotor-type SPMSMs generate larger torque and more stable than inner-rotor-type SPMSMs. For the initial design, space harmonic analysis (SHA) is used. In order to minimize the cogging torque, an optimization was conducted using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). At the end of the paper, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is performed to verify the performance of the optimum model.

The geometry of engineering systems affects their performances. For this reason, the shape of engineering systems needs to be optimized in the initial design stage. However, engineering system design problems consist of multi-objective optimization and the performance analysis using commercial code or numerical analysis is generally time-consuming. To solve these problems, many engineers perform the optimization using the approximation model (response surface). The Response Surface Method (RSM) is generally used to predict the system performance in engineering research field, but RSM presents some prediction errors for highly nonlinear systems. The major objective of this research is to establish an optimal design method for multi-objective problems and confirm its applicability. The proposed process is composed of three parts: definition of geometry, generation of response surface, and optimization process. To reduce the time for performance analysis and minimize the prediction errors, the approximation model is generated using the Backpropagation Artificial Neural Network (BPANN) which is considered as Neuro-Response Surface Method (NRSM). The optimization is done for the generated response surface by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Through case studies of marine system and ship structure (substructure of floating offshore wind turbine considering hydrodynamics performances and bulk carrier bottom stiffened panels considering structure performance), we have confirmed the applicability of the proposed method for multi-objective side constraint optimization problems.

This paper presents an algorithm for structural reliability with the response surface method. For this aim, an approach with three stages is proposed named as improved response surface method. In the algorithm, firstly, a quadratic approximate function is formed and design point is determined with First Order Reliability Method. Secondly, a point close to the exact limit state function is searched using the design point. Lastly, vector projected method is used to generate the sample points and Second Order Reliability Method is performed to obtain reliability index and probability of failure. Five numerical examples are selected to illustrate the proposed algorithm. The limit state functions of three examples (cantilever beam, highly nonlinear limit state function and dynamic response of an oscillator) are defined explicitly and the others (frame and truss structures) are defined implicitly. ANSYS finite element program is utilized to obtain the response of the structures which are needed in the reliability analysis of implicit limit state functions. The results (reliability index, probability of failure and limit state function evaluations) obtained from the improved response surface are compared with those of Monte Carlo Simulation, First Order Reliability Method, Second Order Reliability Method and Classical Response Surface Method. According to the results, proposed algorithm gives better results for both reliability index and limit state function evaluations.
In this paper, the response surface method using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis to optimize the shape of a multi-blade centrifugal fan, is described. For numerical analysis, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with standard k - c turbulence model are transformed into non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system, and are discretized with finite volume approximations. Due to the large number of blades in this centrifugal fan, the flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow by introducing the impeller force models for economic calculations. Linear Upwind Differencing Scheme(LUDS) is used to approximate the convection terms in the governing equations. SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. Design variables, location of cur off, radius of cut off, expansion angle of scroll and width of impeller were selected to optimize the shapes of scroll and blades. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved. It was found that the optimization process provides reliable design of this kind of fans with reasonable computing time.
The problem of brake judder is typically caused by defects of quality manufacturing. DFSS (Design for six sigma) is a design process for quality improvement. DFSS will result in more improved but less expensive quality products. This paper presents an implementation of DFSS for quality improvement of the brake judder of heavy-duty trucks. Carrying out 5 steps of DFSS, the major reasons for defects of quality are found. The numerical approximation of the brake system is derived by means of the response surface method. Its quality for brake judder is improved by using the sigma based robust design methodology. Results are compared between the conventional deterministic optimal design and the proposed sigma based robust design. The proposed one shows that manufacturing cost may increase as the quality level increase. The proposed one, however, is more economical in aspect of the overall cost since the probability of failure dramatically goes down.
An optimal robust design methodology has been developed to minimize warpage in injection-molded pats. The response surface methodology was applied to obtain a functional relationship between design variables and warpage value, and the modified complex method was used as an optimization tool to search for an optimal design solution over prescribed design region. To attain robustness against process variations, Taguchi's SN ratio was introduced as the design metric. The proposed optimal design procedure was applied to an actual part, the Guide-ASF model of a fax machine, and the usefulness of the methodology was shown through the CAE simulation using a commercial injection molding software package.
Optimization of 26 design variables selected from suspension characteristics for Korean High Speed Train (KHST) is performed according to the minimization of 58 responses which represent running safety and ride comfort for KHST and analyzed by using the each response surface model from stochastic design experiments. Sensitivity of design variables is also analyzed through the response surface model which ineffective design prameters to the performance index are screened by using stepwise regression method. The response surface models are used for optimizing design variables through simplex algorism. Values of performance index simulated by optimized design parameters are totally lower than those by initial design parameters. It shows that this method is effective for optimizing multi-design variables to multi-object function.
The purpose of this study is to develop a method of applying response surface analysis to trade-off techniques for the conceptual design of armored vehicle. The problem areas of concern are the use of this method in the selection of optimum design points when user requirements are in conflict. The application of this method to trade-offs of performance parameters in terms of weight are presented.
This paper treats a robust design criterion which minimizes the effects of outliers and model inadequacy, and investigates robust designs for some response surface designs. In order to develop a robust design criterion and robust design, the integrated mean squared error of *(equation omitted) over a region is utilized, where *(equation omitted). is the estimated response by the minimum bias estimation proposed by carson, Manson and Hader (1969) . According to the number of aberrant observations and their positions, the proposed criterion and designs are studied. Also further development of the proposed criterion is treated when outliers can occur in any position of a design.
