  • In this paper, a novel type of auxiliary active snubbing circuit assisted quasi-resonant soft-switching pulse width modulation inverter is proposed for consumer induction heating equipments. The operation principle of this high frequency inverter is described using switching modes and equivalent circuits. This newly developed series resonant high frequency inverter can regulate its high frequency output AC power under a principle of constant frequency active edge resonant soft-switching commutation by asymmetrical PWM control system. The high frequency power regulation and actual power conversion efficiency characteristics of consumer induction heating (IH) products using the proposed soft-switching pulse width modulation (PWM) series load resonant high frequency inverter evaluated. The practical effectiveness and operating performance of high frequency inverter are discussion on the basis of simulation and experimental results as compared with the conventional soft-switching high frequency inverter.

  • This paper deals with a fixed frequency full-bridge inverter type DC-DC high-power converter with high frequency high voltage(HFHV) transformer-coupled stage, which operates under quasi-resonant ZVS transition priciple in spite of a wide PWM-based voltage regulation processing and largely-changed load conditions. This multi-resonant(MR) converter topology is composed of a series capacitor-connected parallel resonant tank which makes the most of parasitic circuit reactive components of HFHV transformer and two additional quasi-resonant pole circuits incorporated into the bridge legs. The soft-switching operation and practical efficacy of this new converter circuit using the latest IGBTs are actually ascertained through 50kV trially-produced converter system operating using 20kHz/30kHz high voltage(HV) transformers which is applied for driving the diagnostic HV X-ray tube load in medical equipments. It is proved from a practical point of view that the switching losses of IGBTs and their electrical dynamic stresses relating to EMI noise can be considerably reduced under a high frequency(HF) switching-based phase-shift PWM control process for a load setting requirements.

  • An induction heating (IH) resonant converter, as well as its coil design method, is proposed in this study to improve the heat capability of low- and high-resistance IH vessels. Conventional IH resonant converters have been designed only for heating high-resistance containers designed for IH application. Thus, the primary current in the resonant tank becomes extremely high to transfer the rated power when the converter heats the low-resistance vessel. As a result, the rated power cannot be transferred due to overcurrent flows against the rated switch current. Hence, the optimal number of coil turns and proper operating frequency to heat high- and low-resistance vessels are proposed in this study by analyzing an IH load model. Simulation and experimental results using a 2.4 kW prototype resonant converter and its IH coil validate the proposed design.

  • In this paper, a novel type auxiliary active edge resonant snubber assisted zero current soft switching pulse modulation Single-Ended Push Pull (SEPP) series load resonant inverter using IGBT power modules is proposed for cost effective consumer high-frequency induction heating (IH) appliances. Its operating principle in steady state is described by using each switching mode's equivalent operating circuits. The new multi resonant high-frequency inverter with series load resonance and edge resonance can regulate its high frequency output power under a condition of a constant frequency zero current soft switching (ZCS) commutation principle on the basis of the asymmetrical pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme. Brand-new consumer IH products using the proposed ZCS-PWM series load resonant SEPP high-frequency inverter using IGBTs is evaluated and discussed as compared with conventional high-frequency inverters on the basis of experimental results. In order to extend ZCS operation ranges under a low power setting PWM as well as to improve efficiency, the high frequency pulse density modulation (PDM) strategy is demonstrated for high frequency multi-resonant inverters. Its practical effectiveness is substantially proved from an application point of view.

  • An average current mode control scheme that consistently offers good dynamic performance for LLC series resonant DC-to-DC converters irrespective of the changes in the operational conditions is presented in this paper. The proposed control scheme employs current feedback from the resonant tank circuit through an integrator-type compensation amplifier to improve the dynamic performance and enhance the noise immunity and reliability of the feedback controller. Design guidelines are provided for both current feedback and voltage feedback compensation. The performance of the new control scheme is demonstrated through an experimental 150 W converter operating with 340 V to 390 V input voltage to provide a 24 V output voltage.

  • This paper describes the static and dynamic characteristic analysis of the Series Resonant DC to DC Converter with frequency control. The natural commutation of all switch element is realized when the switching frequency is below the resonant frequency of the tank circuit, and the analysis is limited to only this region. For the analysis method, state plane technique is adopted, and each operation mode is defined from normalized switching frequency Fsn. Under this condition, circuit performance is analyzed ideally. The physical characteristics of the series resonant converter is easily grasped by this analysis method with frequency control and this analytical results are directly applicable to the actual converter design. The validity of the analysis is verified by comparing with experimental results and the stability of the converter is confirmed against small variations around the operating point by conventional frequency domain analysis.

  • This paper deals with the design and experiment of 85kW(17kV, 5A) high voltage power supply for 60kW industrial magnetron. The power supply was designed based on the series resonant converter discontinuous conduction mode(DCM) which has the current source characteristic and high efficiency. In addition, inevitable leakage inductance of high voltage transformer can be used as resonant inductance. The basic analysis of full-bridge series resonant converter with transformer is given and the relationships between resonant tank parameters and input, output specification was derived. Simulation and experiment was done with variable switching frequency and their results verify the theoretical analysis.

  • To improve the efficiency characteristics in the resonant converter using the contact-less power supply with the large air-gap and the long primary winding, this paper suggests the three-level series-parallel resonant converter(SPRC). The voltage gain characteristics of the proposed converter have the unit gain in a resonance frequency point of the series and parallel, and input voltage and current in the primary of SPRC are always In phase for the all equivalent load resistance because of the parallel resonant tank of the high impedance. The results are verified on the simulation based on the theoretical analysis and the 4kW experimental prototype.

  • This paper presents a resonant non-inverting buck-boost converter in which all switches operate under ZCS conditions. In a symmetric configuration, a CLL resonant tank along with an inverter arm and a rectifying diode are employed. The diode is turned off at ZCS and hence the problem of its reverse recovery is obviated also. As a result switching losses and EMI are reduced and switching frequency can be increased. The converter can work at DCM and CCM depend on the switching frequency and the load-current. Experimental results from a 200W/200KHz laboratory prototype verify operation of the proposed converter and the presented theoretical analysis.
