This paper presents a theoretical study concerning multibubble dynamics in a sound field and the numerical validation for it by employing our new CFD code MTS-DiCUP. In recent papers, the author has shown theoretically that an unknown characteristic frequency, named 'transition frequency,' exists in a multibubble system. For a N -bubble case, up to 2N -1 transition frequencies per bubble have been predicted, only N ones of them correspond to the natural frequencies of the system. The transition frequencies that do not correspond to the natural frequencies give rise to the phase reversal of bubbles' pulsation without resonant response. In this paper, it has been suggested theoretically that those transition frequencies may cause the sign reversal of the secondary Bjerknes force, which is an interaction force acting between acoustically coupled gas bubbles. This theoretical result has been validated by the direct numerical simulation, at least in a qualitative sense.

The interlayers, either softer or stiffer than the surrounding layers, are usually overlooked during field investigation due to the small thickness. They may be neglected through the analysis process for simplicity. However, they may significantly affect the dynamic behavior of the soil-foundation system. In this study, a series of 3D finite-element Direct-solution steady-state harmonic analyses were carried out using ABAQUS/CAE software to investigate the impacts of interlayers on the dynamic response of a cast in place pile group subjected to horizontal harmonic load. The experimental data of a 3×2 pile group testing was used to verify the numerical modeling. The effects of thickness, depth, and shear modulus of the interlayers on the dynamic response of the pile group are investigated. The simulations were conducted on both stiff and soft soils. It was found that the soft interlayers affect the frequency-amplitude curve of the system only in frequencies higher than 70% of the resonant frequency of the base soil. While, the effect of stiff interlayer in soft base soil started at frequency of 35% of the resonant frequency of the base soil. Also, it was observed that a shallow stiff interlayer increased the resonant amplitude by 11%, while a deep one only increased the resonant frequency by 7%. Moreover, a shallow soft interlayer increased the resonant frequency by 20% in soft base soils, whereas, it had an effect as low as 6% on resonant amplitude. Also, the results showed that deep soft interlayers increased the resonant amplitude by 17 to 20% in both soft and stiff base soils due to a reduction in lateral support of the piles. In the cases of deep thick, soft interlayers, the resonant frequency reduced significantly, i.e., 16 to 20%. It was found that the stiff interlayers were most effective on the amplitude and frequency of the pile group.
Ship local structure sometimes experiences severe vibration due to the resonance with an excitation force generated by the propulsion system. In that case, the installation of dynamic vibration absorber such as Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) on the structure can be considered as an effective alternative countermeasure to reduce the troublesome vibration if structural modification or change of excitation frequencies is difficult. Meanwhile, the conventional optimal design method of TMD premises the target structure exposed on an excitation force without the constraint of its magnitude and frequency range. However, the frequencies of major ship excitation forces due to propulsion system are normally bounded and its magnitude is varied according to its operation speed. Hence, the optimal design of TMD to reduce the resonant vibration of ship local structure should be differently approached compared with the conventional ones. For the purpose, this paper proposes an optimal design method of TMD considering maximum frequency and magnitude variation of a target harmonic excitation component. It is done by both lowering the resonant response at the 1st natural frequency and locating the 2nd natural frequency over maximum excitation frequency for the idealized 2 degree of freedom system consisted of the structure and the TMD. For the validation of the proposed method, a numerical design case of TMD for a ship local structure exposed on resonant vibration due to a propeller excitation force is introduced and its performance is compared with the conventionally designed one.
Multiple parallel inverters have multiple resonant frequencies that are influenced by many factors. This often results in stability and power quality problems. This paper develops a multiple input multiple output model of grid-connected inverter systems using a closed-loop transfer function. The influence factors of the resonant characteristics are analyzed with the developed model. The analysis results show that the resonant frequency is closely related to the number, type and composition ratio of the parallel inverters. To suppress resonance, a scheme based on virtual impedance is presented, where the virtual impedance is emulated in the vicinity of the resonance frequency. The proposed scheme needs one inverter with virtual impedance control, which reduces the design complexity of the other inverter controllers. Simulation and experimental tests are carried out on two single phase converter-based setups. The results validate the correctness of the model, the analytical results and the resonant suppressing scheme.
An experimental investigation has been conducted with the objective of studying the mixing mechanism near the nozzle exit in a tone-excited jet diffusion flame. The fuel jet was pulsed by means of a loudspeaker-driven cavity. The excitation frequencies were chosen for the two cases of the non-resonant and resonant frequency identified as a fuel tube resonance due to acoustic excitation. The effect of tone-excitations on mixing pattern near the nozzle exit and flame was visualized using various techniques, including schlieren photograph and laser light scattering photograph from $TiO_2$ seed particles. In order to clarify the details of the flame feature observed by visualization methods, hotwire measurements have been made. Excitation at the resonant frequency makes strong mixing near the nozzle. In this case, the fuel jet flow in the vicinity of nozzle exit breaks up into disturbed fuel parcels. This phenomena affects greatly the combustion characteristics of the tone excited jet and presumably occurs by flow separation from the wall inside the fuel nozzle. As a result, in the resonant frequency the flame length reduces greatly.
In this paper, we present a MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) implantable blood pressure sensor which has designed and fabricated with consideration of size, design flexibility, and wireless detection. Mechanical and electrical characterizations of the sensor were obtained by mathematical analysis and computer aided simulation. The sensor is composed of two coils and a air gap capacitor formed by separation of the coils. Therefore, the sensor produces its resonant frequency which is changed by external pressure variation. This frequency movement is detected by inductive coupling between the sensor and an external antenna coil. Theoretically analyzed resonant frequency of the sensor under 760 mmHg was calculated to 269.556 MHz. Fused silica was selected as sensor material with consideration of chemical and electrical reaction of human body to the material. $2mm{\times}5mm{\times}0.5mm$ pressure sensors fitted to radial artery were fabricated on the substrates by consecutive microfabrication processes: sputtering, etching, photolithography, direct bonding and laser welding. Resonant frequencies of the fabricated sensors were in the range of 269~284 MHz under 760 mmHg pressure.
An analysis of a new load resonant inverter considering stray inductance is given. There are several different types for load resonant inverters. They can offer zero turn-on as well as zero turn-off switching losses, yielding high efficiency at high power and high frequencies. However, they didn't consider the influences of stray inductance. In conventional topology using lossless snubber capacitor, stray inductances result in very high frequency resonant current. Especially, these influences can be problematic in high power system such as induction heating system with large current of some 10A associated with it. These currents increase EMI problem, give harmful effects in gate driver's operation and increase loss of dc-link capacitor as well as snubber capacitor. Therefore, the effect of stray inductances should be treated and reduced. This paper presents a new load resonant inverter topology, which can reduce the effect of stray inductances.
Acoustic behavior in gas turbine combustor with acoustic resonator is investigated numerically by adopting linear acoustic analysis. Helmholtz-type resonator is employed as acoustic resonator to suppress acoustic instability passively. The tuning frequency of acoustic resonator is adjusted by varying its length. Through harmonic analysis, acoustic-pressure responses of chamber to acoustic excitation are obtained and the resonant acoustic modes are identified. Acoustic damping effect of acoustic resonator is quantified by damping factor. As the tuning frequency of acoustic resonator approaches the target frequency of the resonant mode to be suppressed, mode split from the original resonant mode to lower and upper modes appears and thereby complex patterns of acoustic responses show up. Considering mode split and damping effect as a function of tuning frequency, it is desirable to make acoustic resonator tuned to broad-band frequencies near the maximum frequency of those of the possible upper modes.
