Successful treatment of gastrocnemius muscle rupture in a long-tailed goral rescued from a live trap: a case report

  • We describe a case of gastrocnemius muscle rupture in a goral that got caught in a live trap set up to capture wild boars. We established a diagnostic method based on clinical signs and imaging examination findings, including magnetic resonance imaging for gastrocnemius muscle rupture with symptoms such as hindlimb lameness and plantigrade posture of unknown cause in wild animals. Although this condition is rare, this report will help veterinarians diagnose several diseases of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems in wild animals. This is the first report of successful diagnosis and treatment of gastrocnemius muscle rupture in gorals in Korea.

High-pressure NMR application for amyloid-beta peptides

  • High-pressure (HP) NMR is a versatile tool to investigate diverse features of proteins. This technique has been particularly powerful to elucidate structural dynamics that only populates sufficiently in a pressurized condition. Amyloidogenic proteins, which are prone to aggregate and form amyloid fibrils, often maintains highly dynamic states in its native or aggregation-prone states, and HP NMR contributed much to advance our understandings of the dynamic behaviors of amyloidogenic proteins and the molecular mechanisms of their aggregation. In this mini review, we therefore summarize recent HP NMR studies on amyloid-beta (Aβ), the representative amyloidogenic intrinsically disordered protein (IDP).

시동전류 제한을 통한 메탈헬라이드 램프용 안정기의 최적 설계 (A New Optimal Design Method of the Electronic Ballast for MHL with Stable Run-up Current)

  • This paper proposed a new optimal design method of the electronic ballast with stable run-up current for Metal Halide lamp during the ignition condition. In order to avoid operation in the acoustic resonance frequency band and to supply the optimal ignition current without demage of inverter switching components during the ignition period, the values of the series inductor Ls, the series capacitor Cs, and the parallel capacitor Cp were determined by analysis of characteristics of inverter transfer function depend on Lamp operating power and resistance of ignition condition and steady state operating condition. For the prototype ballast for a 400W Metal Halide Lamp, experimental results are presented in order to validate the proposed method.

  • Historically, industrial condition monitoring has been performed by costly hard-wired sensors or infrequent checks by maintenance personnel equipped with hand held monitoring equipment. Self- powered wireless condition monitoring systems provides on-line monitoring of critical plant and machinery providing major operating cost benefits. A vibration energy harvester(VEH) is a device that converts kinetic energy occurred by machine vibration into useable electrical energy. Using VEHs to power wireless monitoring systems can yield significant benefits: increased reliability, lower life time costs and no battery disposal issues, etc. This paper proposes the novel prototype design and manufacturing of a VEH that can eliminate the effect by failed batteries.

초기 재령 콘크리트의 종파 속도와 강도의 상관관계 (Correlation between Longitudinal Wave Velocity and Strength of Early-aged Concrete)

  • The usage of nondestructive testing on early-aged concrete leads to enhacned safty and allows effective scheduling of construction, thus making it possible to maximize the time and cost efficiencies. In this study, a reliable nondestructive strength evaluation method for early-aged concrete using the longitudinal wave velocity is proposed. Compression tests were performed to examine factors influencing the velocity-strength relationship of concrete, such as water-cement (w/c) ratio, fine aggregate ratio, curing temperature, and curing condition. The test results show that a change in the w/c ratio and curing temperature has minor effect on the velocity-strength relationship/ However, curing condition significantly influences the velocity-strength relationship of early-aged concrete. Moreover, the longitudinal wave velocity increases with decreasing fine aggregate ratio. It is concluded from this study that the strength evaluation of early-age concrete can be achieved by a nonlinear equation which considers the effects of curing condition and fine aggregate ratio.

  • This paper describes the vibration characteristics of Nd:YAG laser welding plates analyzed time-average Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI). In laser welding, the travel speed has influence on a mechanical properties, such as elastic modules, response frequencies and so on, which is resulted on a residual stress of the welding zone. the response frequencies related to elastic modules are determined by time-average ESPI and the results, as compared to each condition, are used to estimate optimal condition of travel speed.

  • The safety and stability of 5MW class offshore wind turbine Jack-up platform was investigated through ocean basin experiment. For simulating the environmental condition of yellow sea in the South Korea, diverse waves, winds and currents were performed based on Froude's number. Regular wave and irregular wave based on Froude's number were applied to the wind turbine structure. In experiments, the height and period of regular wave type were scaled down as the 1:50 ratio of real wave condition. Irregular wave type was simulated with TMA(Texel Storm, Marsen and Arsloe)spectrum. The vertical reaction force, resonance period and wave pressure applied to multi-supporters of wind offshore structure were measured experimentally. Finally, the results showed that the capsizing situation of the offshore structure was generated by the severe environmental condition.

Study on Failure Diagnosis of Power Transformer Using FRA

  • As the average usage period of transformers increases, it is becoming increasingly necessary to know the internal condition of transformers. It is therefore critically important to establish monitoring and diagnostic techniques that can perform transformer condition assessment. Frequency response analysis, generally known as FRA, is one of the technologies to diagnose transformers. Using case studies, this paper presents the effectiveness of FRA as measurements for detecting transformer failures. This paper introduces the fact that FRA waveforms have useful information about diagnosis of failure on core earths and winding shield, and that the condition outside transformers can affect frequency response characteristics.

수치해석기반의 동적 p-y 곡선 산정 (Evaluation of Dynamic p-y Curve Based on the Numerical Analysis)

  • 3차원 유한요소 프로그램(PLAXIS 3D)를 이용한 수치해석을 통하여 동적표면하중 하에서지반-말뚝 구조물의 상호작용을 평가하였다. 수치해석에 의한 진동대 실험 형태의 하중조건 및 지반시스템에 대한 동적 p-y곡선을 산정하고 이를 통하여 말뚝-지반의 조건, 말뚝의 선단부 조건, 재하조건 등을 고려하여 매개변수 연구를 하였다. 그 결과 주파수 1.4Hz 입력 진동수가 모형 말뚝-지반 시스템의 고유진동수 1.4Hz와 거의 일치하여 공진 현상이 발생하여서 다른 진동수의 결과와 비교시 다른 p, y 값을 보이고 있다. P-y 곡선에서 이를 대표할 수 있는 경향선을 나타내는 3차 다항함수로 표현하여 결과를 정리하였다. 특히 단독 말뚝의 경우 지배적인 곡선의 형태가 수학적인 증명을 통해 타원(ellipse)임을 밝혀냈다. P-y곡선의형태가 타원인 경우는 타원 방정식을 직접 지반-구조물의 동적설계나 해석에 이용하는 것이 바람직하다고 판단된다.

Fe(acac)3 전구체를 사용한 균일한 산화철 나노입자 제조 (Synthesis of Monodisperse Iron-oxide Nanoparticles from Fe(acac)3 Precursor)

  • 본 연구에서는 온도를 $T_a=273$, 300 및 $324^{\circ}C$로 설정한 고온에서 $Fe(acac)_3$ 전구체가 열분해 한 후 산화철 나노입자를 형성하는 과정을 분석하기 위하여 온도 조절 과정 동안 시간에 따라 순차적으로 추출한 반응 원액의 강자성 공명 신호를 측정하였다. 강자성 공명 신호를 두 번 적분한 마이크로파 흡수량의 증가 시간으로부터 나노입자의 성장 시간을 추정하였으며, 생성된 산화철 나노입자들의 TEM 사진으로부터 나노입자의 크기 및 표준편차를 구하였다. 이들 결과로부터 산화철 나노입자의 균일성과 성장율은 역비례 하였으며, 특히 $T_a=300^{\circ}C$ 온도 조건에서 산화철 나노 입자의 성장율이 가장 빨랐으며, 균일성이 가장 우수하였다. 따라서, 균일한 크기의 산화철 나노입자를 제조하기 위하여 급속 성장 조건이 필요함을 본 연구를 통하여 알 수 있었다.
