  • The inter-story drift ratio is used to evaluate the damage of buildings by the earthquake. This is known that as the inter-story drift ratio decreases, the seismic damage decreases. Although to reduce the inter-story drift ratio is the important issue in the seismic design, no practical inter-story drift design method has bean developed. This study presents an optimal inter-story drift design method to improve the seismic performance of the steel moment frames using the resizing algorithm. The objective function of the proposed method is to minimize the differences of the inter-story drift ratios so that the inter-story drift ratios of the building could be distributed evenly and be reduced. Because this method redesigns the sectional properties of structural members base on the displacement participation factor calculated by the unit-load method, this can improve the seismic performance of the structure without the iterative structural analysis. The efficiency of this algorithm was demonstrated by the application to steel moment frames.

  • In this paper, we propose to re-size images using an oblique projection operator instead of the orthogonal one in order to obtain faster, simpler, and more general algorithms. The main advantage is that it becomes perfectly feasible to use higher order models(e.g., splines of degree n 3). We develop the theoretical background and present a simple and practical implementation procedure that uses B-splines. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm consistently outperforms the standard interpolation method and that it essentially provides the same performance as the optimal procedure (least squares solution) with considerably less computations.

  • Data compression techniques have been studied for decades because they saved space and time to reduce costs. The Lempel-Ziv 77 (LZ77) is a dictionary-based, lossless compression algorithm. The dictionary size of the LZ77 algorithm is fixed, and the performance of the algorithm is highly dependent on its dictionary size. In this paper, we suggest a dynamic LZ77 algorithm that changes its dictionary size during compression, and also we suggest a genetic algorithm to evolve the dictionary-resizing strategies. The suggested algorithm outperformed the original version up to about 16%.

  • The fundamental frequency maximization of beam structures is carried out by using strain energy based topology optimization technique. It mainly uses the modal strain energy distributions induced by the mode shapes of the structures. The modal strain energy to be minimized is employed as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is adopted as the constraint function. The resizing algorithm devised from the optimality criteria method is used to update the hole size of the cell existing in each finite element. The beams with three different boundary conditions are used to investigate the optimum topologies against natural mode shapes. From numerical test, it is found to be that the optimum topologies of the beams produced by the adopted technique have hugh increases in some values of natural frequencies and especially the technique is very effective to maximize the fundamental frequency of the structures.

  • This paper provides the results of the investigation on the optimum topology of simply supported deep beam structures with multi-point load cases. In this study, the strain energy to be minimized is considered as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. The resizing algorithm based on the optimality criteria is adopted to update the hole size existing inside the material. In this study, the sensitivities of topology optimization parameters to the optimum topology of the deep bean structures is investigated and also the effect of filtering process on the optimum topology is thoroughly tested. From numerical tests, the optimum topology of the deep beam is closely related with the optimization parameters used in the iteration and the filtering process play important role in order to find the optimum topology of the deep beam.

  • The unsymmetrically layered artificial material model is consistently introduced to find the optimum topologies of the plate structures. Reissner-Mindlin (RM) plate theory is adopted to formulate the present 9-node plate element considering the first-order shear deformation of the plates. In the topology optimization process, the strain energy to be minimized is employed as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is adopted as the constraint function. In addition, the resizing algorithm based on the optimality criteria is used to update the hole size introduced in the proposed artificial material model. Several numerical examples are rallied out to investigate the performance of the proposed technique. From numerical results, the proposed topology optimization techniques are found to be very effective to produce the optimum topology of plate structures. In particular, the proposed unsymmetric stiffening layer model make it possible to produce more realistic stiffener design of the plate structures.

  • This paper proposes a face tracking scheme that is a combination of a face detection algorithm and a face tracking algorithm. The proposed face detection algorithm basically uses the Adaboost algorithm, but the amount of search area is dramatically reduced, by using skin color and motion information in the depth map. Also, we propose a face tracking algorithm that uses a template matching method with depth information only. It also includes an early termination scheme, by a spiral search for template matching, which reduces the operation time with small loss in accuracy. It also incorporates an additional simple refinement process to make the loss in accuracy smaller. When the face tracking scheme fails to track the face, it automatically goes back to the face detection scheme, to find a new face to track. The two schemes are experimented with some home-made test sequences, and some in public. The experimental results are compared to show that they outperform the existing methods in accuracy and speed. Also we show some trade-offs between the tracking accuracy and the execution time for broader application.

  • Digital watermark technologies conceal the information of video contents that presents who is the owner and/or who is the user. In spite of various attempts to insert watermark, trials to mark information of users or buyers into contents have not been successful. It is the reason that the rates of detection is decreased seriously if there are some attacks to the contents such as resizing or bitrate decreasing. In this paper, the algorithm to insert the coded watermarks of users into video contents and to detect them without original contents under attacks will be described.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved single view metrology (SVM) algorithm to accurately measure the height of objects. In order to accurately measure the size of objects, vanishing points have to be correctly estimated. There are two methods to estimate vanishing points. First, the user has to choose some horizontal and vertical lines in real world. Then, the user finds the cross points of the lines. Second, the user can obtain the vanishing points by using software algorithm such as [6-9]. In the former method, the user has to choose the lines manually to obtain accurate vanishing points. On the other hand, the latter method uses software algorithm to automatically obtain vanishing points. In this paper, we apply image resizing and edge sharpening as a pre-processing to the algorithm in order to improve performance. The estimated vanishing points algorithm create four vanishing point candidates: two points are horizontal candidates and the other two points are vertical candidates. However, a common image has two horizontal vanishing points and one vertical vanishing point. Thus, we eliminate a vertical vanishing point candidate by analyzing the histogram of angle distribution of vanishing point candidates. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional methods, [6] and [7]. In addition, the algorithm obtains similar performance with manual method with less than 5% of the measurement error.

  • This paper describes a topology optimization technique which can maximize the fundamental frequency of the structures. The fundamental frequency maximization is achieved by means of the minimization of modal strain energy as an inverse problem so that the strain energy based resizing algorithm is directly used in this study. The strain energy to be minimized is therefore employed as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. Multi-frequency problem is considered by the introduction of the weight which is used to combine several target modal strain energy terms into one scalar objective function. Several numerical examples are presented to investigate the performance of the proposed topology optimization technique. From numerical tests, it is found to be that the proposed optimization technique is extremely effective to maximize the fundamental frequency of structure and can successfully consider the multi-frequency problems in the topology optimization process.
