  • Annealing were performed to investigate the behaviors of the residual stress remaining on the member of a steel structure. According to the fatigue test, the welding part has higher fatigue crack growth rate than the base metal part because the hardening of welding part reduce fracture toughness. However, the heat treatment decrease the hardness and increase the resistance to failure. Thus, the fatigue crack growth rate is improved and it reaches the minimum at $650^{\circ}C$. Elber' s equation includes the effect of the crack-close so that this equation provides a lower the fatigue crack growth rate than Paris-Erdogan' s equation, the Elber's curves show no significant difference to indentify the effect of the residual stress. The Pop loading along the crack length increases as the hardness goes higher. The heat treatment not only decrease the hardness, and the fatigue crack growth rate, but increase the absorption energy and fracture toughness on the member of a steel structure. As the result, the heat treatment produces the resistant ability to cracking which can reduce the degree of danger to failure.

  • Background: The prevalence rate of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is steadily decreasing in South Korea. However, PTB is a disease with relatively high mortality and morbidity rates throughout Korea. Although there are many studies and statistics about the risk factors of PTB mortality in many countries, there are only a limited number of domestic papers on this topic. The aim of this study is to determine predictive factors for mortality among in-hospital patients associated with PTB. Methods: From December 2006 to January 2011, we reviewed medical records of 2,122 adult patients diagnosed with tuberculosis at a single tertiary hospital in a suburban area. In this study period, 960 patients were diagnosed with PTB by positive Acid fast bacilli smear and/or mycobacterial culture of the respiratory specimen. We compared the groups of patients deceased and patients discharged alive with PTB. The number of dead patients was 82 (47 males, 35 females). Results: Mortality was significantly associated with increased values of white blood cells (WBC), blood urine nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, C-reactive protein (CRP), numbers of involved lung field, and length of hospitalization. Also, it was associated with the decreased values of hemoglobin, lymphocyte, sodium, albumin, and cholesterol. Furthermore, admission through the emergency department, initial intensive care unit admission, and drug resistant PTB affected mortality in PTB patients. Independent predictors associated with PTB mortality are BUN, initial intensive care unit care, and admission during treatment of tuberculosis. Conclusion: In our study, mortality of pulmonary tuberculosis was related with parameters associated with nutritional status, disease severity at the time of admission, and drug resistance.

  • The aim of this paper is to clarify geomorphic features on talus within ${\check{O}}rumkol$ and the origin of ${\check{O}}rumkol$. ${\check{O}}rumkol$ is located in Milyang of Kyungnam province, in South Korea. ${\check{O}}rumkol$ is good area to study talus. because it is characterized by following three geomorphic landscapes : free face surrounding ${\check{O}}rumkol$ ; ${\check{O}}rumkol$ with deep and wide valley floor ; lots of taluses typically developing within ${\check{O}}rumkol$. The main results can be summarized as follows: 1) The origin of ${\check{O}}rumkol$ may be suggested two assumptions : one is that its origin have been resulted from intrusion structure(intrusive rock might capture less resistant rock as tuff) ; the other is that its origin have been resulted from volcanic depression after intrusion or eruption. But these assumptions are not obvious. therefore more geological evidences will be supplemented after this 2) The characteristics of ${\check{O}}rumkol$ talus (1) Pattern ${\check{O}}rumkol$ taluses are tongue-shaped or cone-shaped in appearance. They are $50{\sim}200m$ in length and the range of the maximum width from 25 to 115m and one of their mean slope gradient from 32 to $36^{\circ}$ (2) Origin ${\check{O}}rumkol$ taluses have been formed under periglacial environment in the last glacial age and they are classified into rock fall talus type, considering in conjunction with the shape, hardness, sorting, weathering conditions of constituent debris. (3) The stage of landform development ${\check{O}}rumkol$ talus slope profiles are mainly concave slope. This concave slope type was eventually caused by talus creep at the lower end of the talus. That means new additions of debris from the free face have virtually ceased and there is no evidence of recent motion in the deposit. Now it is predominant that vegetation cover is gradually increasingly. Therefore ${\check{O}}rumkol$ taluses appear to be relict form stage. at present.

  • To investigate the region of ErbB2 for the $ErbB2-{\beta}-catenin$ interaction, a proteasome $resistant-{\beta}-catenin$ and various ErbB2 constructs were transfected in COS7 cells. ErbB2 proteins were immunoprecipitated, and coimmunoprecipitated ${\beta}-catenin$ was examined by Western blotting. ${\beta}-catenin$ coimmunoprecipitated with full length ErbB2. Of the truncated ErbB2 proteins DT (1-1123), DHC (1-1031) and DK (1-750), the ErbB2 constructs containing the kinase domain, DT and DHC, precipitated together with ${\beta}-catenin$ but DK containing no kinase domain did not. To further test the requirement of the kinase domain for ${\beta}-catenin-ErbB2$ interaction, the presence of ${\beta}-catenin$ in the immunocomplex was examined following transfection with an ErbB2 mutant (${\triangle}750-971$) whose kinase domain is internally deleted and subsequent immunoprecipitation of the ErbB2 mutant. ${\beta}-catenin$ was not detected in the immunocomplex. These results suggest that the ErbB2 kinase domain comprises a potential site for ${\beta}-catenin$ binding to the receptor tyrosine kinase.

  • The goal of this study was to characterize the BrDSR (Drought Stress Resistance in B. rapa) gene and to identify the expression network of drought-inducible genes in Chinese cabbage under drought stress. Agrobacterium-mediated transformation was conducted using a B. rapa inbred line ('CT001') and the pSL100 vector containing the BrDSR full length CDS (438 bp open reading frame). Four transgenic plants were selected by PCR and the expression level of BrDSR was approximately 1.9-3.4-fold greater than that in the wild-type control under drought stress. Phenotypic characteristics showed that BrDSR over-expressing plants were resistant to drought stress and showed normal growth habit. To construct a co-expression network of drought-responsive genes, B. rapa 135K cDNA microarray data was analyzed to identify genes associated with BrDSR. BrDSR was directly linked to DARK INDUCIBLE 2 (DIN2, AT3G60140) and AUTOPHAGY 8H (ATG8H, AT3G06420) previously reported to be leaf senescence and autophagy-related genes in plants. Taken together, the results of this study indicated that BrDSR plays a significant role in enhancement of tolerance to drought conditions.

  • A new malting barley variety, 'Baegho', was developed from a cross between Azuma Golden and Nishinochikara in 1998. An elite line, YMB2139-2B-1-10-2, was selected in 2005 and designated as Milyang137. It showed good agronomic performance in the regional adaptation yield trials (RYT) from 2006 to 2008 and was released with the name of 'Baegho' having high yielding and BaYMV and powdery mildew resistance. The average heading and maturing dates of 'Baegho' were April 21 and May 28, which were 3 and 2 day later than those of Hopum, check variety, at the RYT, respectively. 'Baegho' has shoter culm length (78 cm), more spikes ($1,062per\;m^2$) and heavier 1,000 grain weight (40.7 g) than those of Hopum, respectively. 'Baegho' is resistant to domestic BaYMV strains I, III and IV and powdery mildew at Iksan. In growth habit, 'Baegho' is close to type (IV) that is distinguished from other Korean malting barley cultivars, which could tolerant to premature heading damage that is major concern for the practice of the malting barley cropping. The yield potential of 'Baegho' in the RYT was about 5.57 MT/ha, which is about 13% higher than those of Hopum. This variety has good malting quality in grain and malting analysis showed better 1,000 grain weight, husk rate, diastatic power than those of Hopum. 'Baegho' applied for protection of new varieties of plant in 2009.

  • "Hwaweon 1" was developed from an interspecific cross between Hwaseongbyeo and a wild species, Oryza rufipogon L. (IRGC 105491) based on marker-aided selection. The recurrent parent "Hwaseongbyeo" is a high grain quality cultivar with medium-maturity. Hwaweon 1 is nearly isogenic to Hwaseongbyeo except a small O. rufipogon introgression on chromosome 8 harboring the gene for grain weight. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) in 2007 and 2008. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as "Hwaweon 1". This cultivar averaged 89 cm in culm length and has a medium growth duration. This cultivar is resistant to stripe virus as the recurrent parent, Hwaseongbyeo. Milled rice of "Hwaweon 1" is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. The yield potential of "Hwaweon 1" in grain is about 7.43 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level about 10% higher than that of Hwaseongbyeo mainly due to increase in grain weight.

  • The A60 class deck penetration piece is a fire-resistant system installed on a horizontal compartment to prevent flame spreading and protect lives in fire accidents in ships and offshore plants. This study deals with approximate optimization using discrete variables for the fire resistance design of an A60 class deck penetration piece using different surrogate models and a genetic algorithm. Transient heat transfer analysis was performed to evaluate the fire resistance design of the A60 class deck penetration piece. For the approximate optimization of the piece, the length, diameter, material type, and insulation density were applied to discrete design variables, and temperature, productivity, and cost constraints were considered. The approximate optimum design problem based on the surrogate models was formulated such that the discrete design variables were determined by minimizing the weight of the piece subjected to the constraints. The surrogate models used in the approximate optimization were the response surface model, Kriging model, and radial basis function-based neural network. The approximate optimization results were compared with the actual analysis results in terms of approximate accuracy. The radial basis function-based neural network showed the most accurate optimum design results for the fire resistance design of the A60 class deck penetration piece.
