The 1986 AASHTO Guide for the Design of Pavement Structures introduced the resilient modulus as a definitive material property to characterize roadbed soil. Although the incorporation of resilient modulus represents a significant acvance in pavement design practice, the test procedure for resilient modulus is complicated and time-consuming. Therefore, it is necessary to develop data base of resilient modulus for the soils frequently encountered; and to develop the reliable correlations between resilient properties and parameters from simple routine tests, In this study, resilient modulus tests were performed on five cohesive soils sampled from in-service subgrades. The stress at 1 percent axial strain in unconfined compression test(su1.0%) was found as a good indicator of the resilient modulus, and unique relationship between Mg and Su1.0% was obtained. A simple chart to estimate the resilient modulus at different levels of confining stress and deviator stress was also developed.

The installation methods of diesel engines in ships would be largely classified into two groups : one is the direct mounting system fixing engine directly into double bottom of the hull, and the other is the resilient mounting system having vibration absorbers between engine and ship body such as rubber plate to prevent shocks or vibration transmission. The direct mounting system is generally used for large-sized low speed diesel engines, because the resilient mounting system has difficulties in reducing the natural frequency of engine itself under normal speed. On the contrary, the resilient mounting system is often used for medium or high speed engines for marine propulsion and generator that have light weight and high revolution speed. Recently, it is even applied to engines having relatively low speed(300-400rpm) for fishing boats. Although many researches for the resilient mounting system have been carried out, many problems in applying these results directly to marine vessels because most of these have been used for automobiles. Up to now we have had to depend on the professional foreign company in design and the supply of parts for the resilient mounting system of marinediesel engines utterly. In preseut study, the exciting forces of engines effecting to resilient mounting were examined, and patterns of vibration and evaluation procedure for force transmission from resilient mounting to the body of hull were established. Also, these results were applied to the analysis of free and forced vibration for the rubber-type resilient mounting systems of marine diesel engines. Besides, after changing the various design parameters, such as locations, angles, dynamic characteristics and the number of resilient mountings, the influences on resilient mounting system were also examined.
Resilient modulus has been used for characterizing the stress-strain behavior of subgrade soils subjected to traffic loadings. With the recent release of the M-E Design Guide, highway agencies are further encouraged to implement the resilient modulus test to improve subgrade design. The subgrade design for the trackbed, however, is primarily relying on the static test results such as $K_{30}$ and deformation modulus, Ev. Therefore applicability of the resilient modulus for the design of trackbed needs to be evaluated. In this study, physical property tests, unconfined compressive tests and resilient modulus tests were conducted to assess the resilient and permanent strain behavior of 14 cohesive subgrade soils. A predictive model for estimating the resilient modulus is proposed based on the results of unconfined compressive tests and tangent elastic modulus, unconfined compressive strength, failure strain, secant modulus at peak, and yield strain. The predicted resilient moduli using the predictive models compared satisfactorily with measured ones. Although the permanent strain occurs during the resilient modulus test, the permanent behavior of subgrade soils is currently not taken into consideration.

This study is performed to evaluate and design the vibration characteristics of the onboard machinery with resilient mountings. To reduce the vibration level of onboard machinery with resilient mountings, it is important to evaluate and, if necessary, modify the vibration characteristics of the resilient mountings. In this study, we have developed a program to calculate natural frequencies of the machinery with resilient mountings, forced vibration levels due to internal excitation force of the machinery itself and external excitation forces. of the main engine and the propeller. and the force and motion transmissibility of the resilient mountings. The developed program is also able to be applied to optimal design of the resilient mountings for obtaining a target natural frequency and for achieving a minimum forced vibration level at the center of gravity of the machinery.

Diesel generator sets with resilient mounts often experience resonances by major excitations which come from diesel engine and their foundation with rigid body modes. Because their natural frequency is determined by moment of inertia and stiffness of resilient mount vibration problems are resolved by changing location and stiffness of resilient mounts. But the calculated natural frequencies are inaccurate due to uncertainty of the inertia and mount stiffness. So this result can be useless on the design stage. In this paper, the stiffness of mount is evaluated on result from mount stiffness test in laboratory and generator set vibration test and a simple calculation method for moment of inertia is proposed. Based on these data, the procedure to select optimized mount stiffness and location on the design stage is set up.
Recently, the rational methods of pavement design and analysis using the resilient modulus, MR, as fundamental input material property have been increasingly adopted in major advanced countries. Since the development of 1986 AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures, many researches concerning the resilient characteristics of various pavement materials as well . as development of reliable testing methods have been actively performed. Anticipating the use of Mn-based pavement design and analysis such as resilient characteristics and Mn - CBR relat - ionship of domestic subgrade soils were performed including development of a standard MR test procedure suitable for subgrade soils in our country.
There is a tendency of using the resilient mounting system to control the structure born noise transimitted from a engine of which weight is comparatively light and of which speed is comparatively high. According to recent reports, the resilient mounting system is applied to control the vibration of a engine running up to 300 - 400 R.P.M.. Furthermore, the resilient system is also used to the ships such as marine exploring ships, fishing boats, and military vessels. It is not desirous to apply the results for the resilient mounting systems of automobile engines to the controls of the vibrations of marine engines. Marine engines are worked under the idle speed in port and are operated up to the maximum contineous revolution at sea(running up condition). And marine engines are usually worked in inevitable conditions such as a misfire and a cut-off cylinder operating condition. Concerning the above running conditions, a resilient mounting system should be designed in the case of marine engines. In this paper, we studied the effect of engine's misfire on the resilient mounting systems. And the influences of design parameters, such as dynamic characteristics and fitting angles of resilient rubber mountings, were also investigated respectively on the single and double resilient mounting systems.

The purpose of resilient mounting for marine engine is to prevent noise and ship damages caused by engine vibration. Although many researches for the resilient mounting system have been carried out, these results have limit to apply on the marine engine systems. Because marine engine generally have low speed operating range and have to consider misfiring condition. In this paper, we studied the effect of engine's misfiring on the resilient mounting systems. And the influences of design parameters, such as dynamic characteristics and location angles of resilient rubber mountings, were also examined on the single and double resilient mounting systems.

Resilient deformation characteristics on unbound pavement materials have been adopted for design and nonlinear analysis of pavement structure under traffic loadings. However, relatively few studies have been done on the nonlinear resilient behavior of unbound pavement materials in Korea. In addition, only the limited information is available for estimating the resilient modulus values on unbound materials. In this study, a laboratory resilient-deformation test under repeated loadings is performed in order to fud a proper constitutive model that correlates the resilient modulus with stress state from field condition. Finally, a finite element analysis is conducted for evaluating the nonlinear characteristics of unbound materials. and the pavement performance respectively.
