Diamond-like carbon(DLC) films were deposited by linear ion source(LIS)-physical vapor deposition method changing the anode voltages from 800 V to 1800 V, and characteristics of the films were investigated using residual stress tester, nano-indentation, micro raman spectroscopy, scratch tester and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope(FE-SEM). The results showed that the residual stress and hardness increased with increasing the ion energy up to anode voltage of 1400 V. It was also found that the content of $SP^3$ carbon increased with increasing the anode voltage $SP^3/SP^2$ ratio through investigation of $SP^3/SP^2$ ratio by the micro-raman analysis. From these results, it can be concluded that the physical properties of DLC films such as residual stress and hardness are increased with increasing the anode voltage. These results can be explained that 3-dimensional cross-links between carbon atoms and Dangling bond are enhanced and the internal compressive stress also increased with increasing the anode voltage. The optimal anode voltage is considered to be around 1400 V in these experimental conditions.
In this thesis, ZnO varistors with various formulation, such as A∼E, were fabricated according to ceramic fabrication method. The microstructure, electrical properties, and surge characteristics of ZnO varistors were investigated according to ZnO varistors with various formulation. In the microstructure, A∼E\`s ZnO varistor ceramics sintered at 1130$\^{C}$ was consisted of ZnO grain(ZnO), spinel phase (Zn$\_$2.33/Sb$\_$0.67/O$\_$4/), Bi-rich phase(Bi$_2$O$_3$) and intergranuler phase, wholly. Lightning impulse residual voltage of A, B, C and E\`s ZnO varistors suited standard characteristics, below 12kV at current of 5kA. On the contrary, D\`s ZnO varistor exhibited high residual voltage as high reference voltage. In the accelerated aging test, leakage current and watt loss of B, C and D\`s ZnO varistors increases abruptly with stress time under the first a.c. stress(115$\^{C}$/3.213kV/300h). Consequently, C varistor exhibited a thermal run away. On the contrary, leakage current and watt loss of A and C\`s ZnO varistors which show low initial leakage current exhibited constant characteristics. After high current impulse test, A\`s ZnO varistor has broken the side of varistor but impulse current flowed. On the contrary, E\`s ZnO Varistor exhibited good discharge characteristics which the appearance of varistor was not wrong such as puncture, flashover, creaking and other significant damage. After long duration impulse current test, E\`s ZnO varistor exhibited good discharge characteristics which the appearance of varistor was not wrong such as puncture, flashover, creaking and other significant damage. After high current impulse test and long duration impulse current test, E\`s ZnO varistor exhibited very good characteristics which variation rate of residual voltage is 1.4% before and after test.
In this paper, the study of influence of DC voltage and AC voltage on residual voltage of XLPE Cable was presented. In the former case, when the DC voltage of -10.0[kV] was applied to XLPE Cable for 0, 600, 1200, 1800[sec], time constants were 2139, 1416, 939, 488[sec] and resistivities were 930, 615.65, 408.26, 212.17[${\Omega}{\cdot}m$] respectively. In the latter case, when the AC voltage of 4 and 6[kV] was applied to the same Cable for 600[sec] after applying DC voltage of -5.0[kV] for 600[sec], time constants were 215, 275[sec] and resistivities were 93.48, 119.57[${\Omega}{\cdot}m$] respectively. In this experiments, measurement voltage, charging time and measurement time were -8.0[kV], 30[sec], 600[sec] respectively.
The paper describes the development of arrester for 154kV class power station and substation. The arrester employs silicone insulating materials for Its housing, instead of the conventional porcelain housing. The sealing integrity is related to safe operation of surge arrester, the prime failure reason of porcelain housed arresters is moisture ingress. In this paper, the sealing integrity of polymeric surge arresters for ultra high voltage is investigated with moisture ingress test. The diagnostic techniques are discusses, including watt loss, partial discharge, AC leakage current, 1mA DC voltage and residual voltage.
This paper describes the effect of impulse current on degradation of ZnO blocks. In this study, an impulse current generator which can produce 8/20 [${\mu}s$], 3 [kA] and 4/10 [${\mu}s$], 5 [kA] waveform is designed and fabricated to simulate the lightning impulse current. The residual voltage, reference voltage, and leakage current flowing to the ZnO blocks are observed. The experimental results show that the leakage current increases continuously with the number of applied impulse current, but no significant changes in residual voltage and in operating voltage are observed until the ZnO block is destroyed. Also, it is confirmed that the main factor on degradation of ZnO blocks is rather the total energy applied to ZnO blocks than the peak value of the impulse current.
This paper presents a method of simulating the protection effects of surge protective devices(SPDs) depending on the protective distance and types of input impedance of load to be protected. In order to analyze the protective performances of voltage-limiting type SPDs associated with the reflection and oscillation phenomena, the terminal voltage across load being protected and the residual voltage of SPDs were simulated by using EMTP model as functions of the protective distance and types of input impedance of loads. As a consequence, SPDs should be installed by taking into account the protective distance and input impedance of loads to achieve reliable protection of electrical and electronic equipment from lightning and switching surges. It is expected that the simulation method proposed in this paper could be practically used in design for installing SPDs in low-voltage distribution systems.
Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) are widely used as surge protectors for communication applications due to their small internal capacitance. In these days, however, they are mostly used in combined configurations, because the activation voltage required to initiate the discharge process in the GDTs for sufficient amount of time can be large enough to damage surge-sensitive protected circuits. For GDTs with a considerably high initial over-voltage value, we should limit the peak voltage using a TVS or filter. As for ZnO varistors, even though their performance for voltage restriction is excellent their applications in high-frequency communication circuits have been limited because of higher internal capacitance when compared to the GDTs. In order to develop a surge protector for communication applications by taking advantages of these two devices, we built a combination circuit that connects a GDT and a ZnO varistor along with a choke coil in common and differential modes. We describe how the applied SPDs operate in protection process steps with the actual data obtained from the residual voltage measurements at each step. The experiment results show that the surge voltage restriction with the choke coil is more effective in differential mode than in common mode.
This paper presents the fabrication and performance evaluation of zinc oxide varistors for the arresters used for station system. ZnO varistors were fabricated with typical ceramic production methods and the structural and electrical characteristics were investigated. All varistors exhibited high density, which were in the range of $5.41{\sim}5.49g/cm^3$. In the electrical properties the reference voltage increased in the range of $4.410{\sim}5.250kV$ with increasing their thickness and the residual voltage exhibited the same trends as the reference voltage. In the long duration current impulse withstand test, E-2 and F-1 samples failed in the two and four shots, respectively, but E-1 and F-2 samples survived 18 shots during the test. Before and after this test, the variation ratio of residual voltage of E-1 and F-2 samples were -0.34% and 0.05%, respectively, which were in the acceptance range of 5%. According to the results of tests, it is thought that if the fabrication process such as insulating coating, sintering condition, and soldering method is improved, these ZnO varistors would be possible to apply to the station class arresters in the new future.
Purpose : Hand-held dental x-ray system is a self contained x-ray machine designed to perform intraoral radiography with one or two hands. The issue about its usage as general dental radiography is still in dispute. The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between the amount of battery charge and the tube voltage in different handheld dental x-ray systems. Materials and Methods : Seven hand-held dental x-ray units were used for the study. Tube voltage was measured with Unfors ThinX RAD (Unfors Instruments AB, Billdal, Sweden) for 3 consecutive exposures at the different amount of battery charge of each unit. The average and the deviation percentage of measured kV from indicated kV of each unit were calculated. Results : Tube voltage of only 1 unit was 70 kV (indicated by manufacturer) and those of the others were 60 kV. Tube voltage deviation percentage from the indicated kV at the fully charged battery was from 2.5% to -5.5% and from -0.8% to -10.0% at the lowest charged battery. Conclusion : Tube voltages of all units decreased as the residual amount of the battery charge decreased. It is suggested that the performance test for hand-held x-ray system should be performed for the minimum residual charged battery as well as the full charged one. Persistent battery charging is suggested to maintain the proper tube voltage of the hand-held portable x-ray system.
This work presents the response characteristics of a ZnO varistor to conductive EMP. An E1 pulse, standardized to MIL-STD-188-125-1, was applied to the varistors wherein the residual current and response times were measured with the applied E1 pulse current. Additionally, the response time was measured according to the length of the connection path. Consequently, the amplitude of the residual voltage through the ZnO varistors was increased with increasing amplitude of the applied E1 pulse current. As the length of the connection path increased, the operating response time and residual peak voltage also increased. These results indicate that the response characteristics of ZnO varistors can be applied to basic data to support the use of varistors as a protective measure against conductive EMP.
