  • We proposed a flexible link configuration in a system combining mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) and dispersion management used for long-distance transmission of high-capacity optical signals such as wavelength division multiplexing signals, and examined specific methods to increase chromatic dispersion and nonlinear distortion compensation effects. The dispersion map proposed to increase the flexibility of dispersion-managed link configuration has a 'random-inverse' structure. That is, in the proposed dispersion map, the residual dispersion per span (RDPS) of each fiber span in the first half section up to the optical phase conjugator is randomly distributed, and the RDPS distribution in the second half section reverses the distribution pattern of the first section. Although the proposed dispersion map has a random distribution of RDPS, it was confirmed that the distortion compensation effect is improved due to the fact that the dispersion profile is symmetrical with respect to the optical phase conjugator. In the dispersion map of the 'random-inverse' configuration, it was also confirmed that the compensation effect of the distorted wavelength division multiplexing signal becomes improved when the magnitude of the RDPS allocated to each fiber span is large.

  • The compensation characteristics of the distorted WDM channels compensated for by dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugation in the long-haul ($50\;fiber\;spans{\times}80km$) transmission link with the randomly distributed single mode fiber (SMF) length and residual dispersion per spans (RDPS) for implementing of the flexible link configuration are investigated. It is confirmed that the compensation effect in the link with the randomly distributed SMF length and RDPS is similar with that in the link with the uniform distribution, when the launch power of WDM channels are restricted within 0 dBm. This result means that the proposed link configuration is useful for designing and deploying the long-haul WDM transmission link.

  • In order to install ultra wide band and ultra long-haul transmission link based on standard single mode fiber, optical signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinear Kerr effect must to be compensated. In this paper, optical link consisted of dispersion management and optical phase conjugation is proposed for compensation of the distorted wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channels. Dispersion map profile in the proposed dispersion-managed link is configured by periodic repetitive shape, and optical phase conjugator is placed at various position including the midway of total transmission length. It is confirmed from simulation results that when the residual dispersion per span (RDPS) selected in the proposed dispersion-managed link to be large, the compensation of distorted WDM channels in the non-midway OPC system is more improved than the conventional dispersion-managed link.

  • In this paper, dispersion-managed optimal link configuration with the growth/decay distribution of accumlative dispersion as the fiber span is increased, in which optical phase conjugator placed at midway, is proposed. It is confirmed that if net residual dispersion set to be -15 ps/nm or 15 ps/nm in the proposed optical link configuration, the best compensation of the distorted wavelength division multiplexed channels will be obtained.

  • The various techniques to compensate for the signal distortion due to the group velocity dispersion (GVD) and nonlinear Kerr effects of optical fibers in the optical links have been proposed in the literature. We propose a flexible dispersion-managed link configuration consisted of single-mode and dispersion-compensating fibers with irregular dispersion coefficients over all fiber spans, and an optical phase conjugator added midway along the optical links. By distributing the lengths of the single mode fibers, we achieve a flexible optical link. The simultaneous ascending and descending distribution of the single-mode fiber lengths before and after the optical phase conjugator, respectively, best compensates the distorted wavelength division multiplexed signals in the optical link with non-fixed coefficients. Our result is consistent with those of our previous work on fixed coefficients. Therefore, to improve the compensation at any magnitude of dispersion coefficient, we must artificially distribute the lengths of the single-mode fibers into a dispersion-managed link.

  • When mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI), which inverts the propagated wave into phase-conjugated wave in the middle of the entire transmission distance, is combined with dispersion-managed link, it is very effective in compensating for the wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects. In this MSSI combined dispersion-managed link, the shape of the dispersion map, channel data rate, channel wavelength and wavelength spacing, etc. affect the compensation and, consequently, determine the transmission distance and capacity of the WDM signal. In this paper, the compensation according to the extinction ratio of the return-to-zero (RZ) pulse that constitutes the WDM signal in the MSSI combined distributed control link was numerically analyzed. As a result of the simulation, it was conformed that the extinction ratio to obtain the best compensation should be determined depending on the shape of the dispersion map and the size of the residual dispersion per span, which determines the specific shape of the dispersion map. These results show a significant difference from the results in a general optical transmission system, where as the extinction ratio increases, the power difference between the '1' and '0' signals increases, thereby improving reception performance.

  • Net residual dispersion (NRD) available to transmit 160 Gbps OPDM signal is induced in optical transmission links with dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugator (OPC) for compensating of chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation (SPM). It is confirmed that the perfect cancellation of accumulated dispersion is necessary to transmit 160 Gbps OTDM signal.

  • A dispersion map was proposed to improve the compensation effect of a distorted WDM (wavelength division multiplexed) channel in a dispersion-managed link coupled with optical phase conjugation. The dispersion map is an origin-symmetric structure around the optical phase conjugator in the middle of the transmission path. In addition, the dispersion map has a form in which a constant dispersion accumulation pattern is repeated regularly. Through simulation, we confirmed that the application of the origin-symmetric dispersion map with a repetitively shaped configuration was more effective in compensating for the distorted WDM channel than in the dispersion-managed link with a conventional dispersion map. In addition, we confirmed that the compensation effect could be increased when the cumulative dispersion distribution of the origin-symmetric distribution map had a positive value in the first half section and a negative value in the second half section. Further, we observed that as the number of repeated dispersion accumulation patterns increased, the residual dispersion per span should also be increased.

  • System performance improvement through the concentrated residual dispersion per span (RDPS) in special transmission fiber spans in optical transmission links with dispersion management (DM) for wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) transmission is investigated through the comparison with the performance in optical transmission links with uniform RDPS in every fiber spans. It is confirmed that, in optical links with RDPS of 0 ps/nm uniformly distributed in the rest fiber spans, if RDPS of 300 ps/nm and 1,320 ps/nm are concentrated in 5th-13th fiber spans and 6th-13th fiber spans, respectively, then the best performance is obtained. It is also confirmed that optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) controlled by precompensation and postcompensation are 10 ps/nm and -10 ps/nm, respectively, in all two cases, and the effective launching power range below 1 dB eye opening penalty (EOP) in the concentrated RDPS of 300 ps/nm and 1,320 ps/nm are improved by 2 dB and 6 dB than optical transmission links with the uniformly distributed RDPS, respectively.
