  • This paper relates with the VS-QE-MMA (Varying Stepsize-Quantized Error-MMA) based on the varying stepsize for improving the equalization performance in the QE-MMA adaptive equalization algorithm that is possible to reducing the intersymbol interference occurred at channel. The SE-MMA use the high-order statistics of transmitted signal and sign of error signal. The QE-MMA was appeared for the H/W implementation easiness substitutes the multiplication and substraction into the shift and substraction in the updating the tap coefficient based on the power-of-two operation of error signal magnitude. The QE-MMA gives degradation of equalization performance due to the such simplification of arithmetic operation. For improving this problem, the propose algorithm, namely VS-QE-MMA, applies the varying stepsize of the nonlinear transformation of error signal. It was confirmed by simulation that the VS-QE-MMA gives better performance than current QE-MMA in the same channel and signal to noise ratio. As a result of simulation, the VS-QE-MMA has more better performance in the every performance index, and it was also confirmed that the varying stepsize effect can be obtained in the greater than 10dB of signal to noise ratio.

  • Kissing of sub-conductors due to magnetic forces has been investigated in a 154 kV bundled overhead transmission line. With increasing ampacity of the conductors and enlarging the distance between spacers, lager magnetic force was measured. When the phase ampacity was 2,000 amps and the distance between two adjacent spacers was 68 m, for instance, the conductors became unstable and vibrated with a frequency of several herts. Furthermore, when the ampacity was 2,250 amps and the distance between spacers was 136 m, the two sub-conductors were contacted. Analysing the magnetic forces with distance of spacers, the safe distance of spacers to avoid contact of sub-conductors was presented. The change of the safe distance is discussed due to various parameters, such as residual stresses and wind pressures, in the real transmission lines.

  • Pressurized fluidized bed combustion unit is operated at pressures of 1~1.5 MPa with combustion temperatures of 850~87$0^{\circ}C$. The pressurized coal combustion system heats steam, in conventional heat transfer tubing, and produces a hot gas supplied to a gas turbine. Gas cleaning is a vital aspect of the system, as is the ability of the turbine to cope with some residual solids. The need to pressurize the feed coal, limestone and combustion air, and to depressurize the flue gases and the ash removal system introduces some significant operating complications. The proportion of power coming from the steam : gas turbines is approximately 80:20%. Pressurized fluidized bed combustion and generation by the combined cycle route involves unique control considerations, as the combustor and gas turbine have to be properly matched through the whole operating range. The gas turbines are rather special, in that the maximum gas temperature available from the FBC is limited by ash fusion characteristics. As no ash softening should take place, the maximum gas temperature is around 90$0^{\circ}C$. As a result a high pressure ratio gas turbine with compression intercooling is used. This is to offset the effects of the relatively low temperature at the turbine inlet.

  • Steam generator tubes for nuclear power plants contain the local shape transitions on their inner or outer surface such as dent, bulge, over-expansion, eccentricity, deflection, and so on by the application of physical force during the tube manufacturing and steam generator assembling and by the sludge (that is, corrosion products) produced during the plant operation. The structural integrity of tubes will be degraded by generating the corrosive crack at that location. The profilometry using the traditional bobbin probes which are currently applied for measuring the profile change of tubes gives us basic information such as axial locations and average magnitudes of deformations. However, the three-dimensional quantitative evaluation on circumferential locations, distributional angle, and size of deformations will have to be conducted to understand the effects of residual stresses increased by local deformations on corrosive cracking of tubes. Steam generator tubes of Korean standard nuclear power plants expanded within their tube-sheets by the explosive expansion method and suffered from corrosive cracks in the early stage of power operation. Thus, local deformations of steam generator tubes at the top of tube-sheet were measured with an advanced rotating probe and a laser profiling system for the two cases where the tubes expanded by the explosive expansion method and hydraulic expansion. Also, the trends of eccentricity, deflection, and over-expansion of tubes were evaluated. The advanced eddy current profilometry was confirmed to provide accurate information of local deformations compared with laser profilometry.

  • A sensor fault detection and isolation scheme(SFDIS) is adopted to improve the reliability of direct torque controlled induction motor drives and the experimental results are discussed. Major contributions include: experimental analysis of a few important sensor faults. design and implementation of the proposed SFDIS, and the fault tolerant control system(FTCS). Although the adopted SFDIS employs only one observer for residual generation, the system has the function of fault isolation that only multiple observer schemes can have. To verify the performance of the proposed scheme, the speed control system is designed for the 2.2kW direct torque controlled Induction motor. Hardware of the control system consists of a control board using TMS320OVC33 and a power stack using IPM. Experimental results for various type of sensor faults show the effectiveness of the SFDIS and the FTCS.

  • Double-talk detection errors can result in either large residual echo or distorting the near-end talker's input speech. Thus accurate double-talk detection is an important problem in the acoustic echo canceller to improve the speech quality. In the double-talk detection algorithm using a cross-correlation coefficient, double-talk detection errors can occur in the initial convergence period of an adaptive filter or in noisy environment since the cross-correlation coefficient becomes large in such situations. In this paper, we propose a new double-talk detection algorithm based on the cross-correlation method using a normalized error signal power to reduce the double-talk detection errors. The experimental results have shown the performance improvement of an acoustic echo canceller as well as the noise-robustness of the proposed double-talk detector.

  • Conventional on-channel-repeaters (OCRs) have a crucial problem that the power of a re-transmitted signal is highly limited by a feedback signal due to antenna coupling. The power limitation problem in OCRs has been solved by incorporating a demodulation-type feedback canceller which eliminates unwanted feedback signals by estimating a feedback channel. In applying the demodulation-type feedback canceller to T-DMB repeaters, there is a troublesome problem of unfrequent known pilot symbols, resulting in poor convergence performance of channel estimation. To solve this problem and enhance the accuracy of estimation, we propose a partitioning method of the Phase Reference Symbol (PRS) transformed in time domain. Since filter coefficients are updated every one partitioned subgroup, the number of updates is increased by the number of partitioned subgroups and thus the convergence speed is enhanced. The improved performance of feedback-channel estimation is directly connected with the feedback-cancellation performance. Simulation result shows that the feedback canceller incorporating the proposed partitioning method has a good performance in terms of residual feedback power.

  • In spite of the merits of laser welding being able to obtain the high welding quality such as smaller width of melting and heat affected zone, smaller welding deformation and fine grains of weldment compared to arc welding, laser welding is mainly used in joining of thin steel parts of electronics industry. Laser welding is getting widely used in joining thick plate and special kinds of steel due to its high power. While the arc welding is still applied for 2.25Cr-1Mo steel which is the essential material of atomic power generation equipment, the laser welding is not yet applied despite its high quality. So it has a trial to a special case demanding high welding quality such as atomic power plant. Accordingly, in this research, the mechanical properties of weldments by arc and laser welding were investigated using FEM to confirm the applicability of laser welding to 2.25Cr-1Mo steel. The Charphy test was carried out to understand the effect on the fracture toughness of weldments. The results of examination and test of the mechanical properties showed the validity of this research.

  • This paper evaluates the QE-MMA (Quantized Error-MMA) adaptive equalization algorithm by the number of quantizer in order to compensates the intersymbol interference due to channel in the transmission of high spectral efficient nonconstant modulus signal. In the adaptive equalizer, the error signal is needed for the updating the tap coefficient, the QE-MMA uses the polarity of error signal and correlation multiplier that condered nonlinear finite bit power-of-two quantizing component in order to convinience of H/W implementation. The different adaptive equalization performance were obtained by the number of quantizer, these performance were evaluated by the computer simulation. For this, the equalizer output signal constellation, residual isi, maximum distortion, MSE, SER were applied as a performance index. As a result of computer simulation, it improved equalization performance and reduced equalization noise were obtained in the steady state by using large quantizer bit numbers, but gives slow in convergence speed for reaching steady state.

  • Background: This study examined the detection limit of thyroid screening monitoring conducted at the time of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in 2011 using a Monte Carlo simulation. Materials and Methods: We calculated the detection limit of a NaI(Tl) survey meter to measure 131I accumulation in the thyroid gland of children. Mathematical phantoms of 1- and 5-year-old children were developed in the simulation of the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System code. Contamination of the body surface with eight radionuclides found after the FDNPP accident was assumed to have been deposited on the neck and shoulder area. Results and Discussion: The detection limit was calculated as a function of ambient dose rate. In the case of 40 Bq/cm2 contamination on the body surface of the neck, the present simulations showed that residual thyroid radioactivity corresponding to thyroid dose of 100 mSv can be detected within 21 days after intake at the ambient dose rate of 0.2 µSv/hr and within 11 days in the case of 2.0 µSv/hr. When a time constant of 10 seconds was used at the dose rate of 0.2 µSv/hr, the estimated survey meter output error was 5%. Evaluation of the effect of individual differences in the location of the thyroid gland confirmed that the measured value would decrease by approximately 6% for a height difference of ±1 cm and increase by approximately 65% for a depth of 1 cm. Conclusion: In the event of a nuclear disaster, simple measurements carried out using a NaI(Tl) scintillation survey meter remain effective for assessing 131I intake. However, it should be noted that the presence of short-half-life radioactive materials on the body surface affects the detection limit.
