  • This study was carried out to research on the optimum condition of $MgAl_2O_4$ spinel synthesis and the chara-ceteristics of its sintered bodies. In this study the used materials-MgO $Al_2O_3$-were prepared from the extragrade chemicals $Mg(OH)_2 Al(OH)_3$ respectively. The tendency to spinel synthesis and sintering condition were discussed about additives of SEM and the characteristics of sintered bodies were measured by TMA etc, The results were as follows ; 1. The addion of $TiO_2$ promoted more effectively the sinterbility than that of $MnO_2$. 2. Residual $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ and MgO in theorectical composition samples were disappeared at 1$600^{\circ}C$ 3. When added MnO2 residual $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ and MgO were disappeared at 150$0^{\circ}C$ and 1$600^{\circ}C$ respectively. 4, . When added $TiO_2$ residual $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ and MgO were disappeared at 150$0^{\circ}C$ and 134$0^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • The optimal rechlorination in water distribution systems was investigated by incorporating optimization techniques into a numerical water quality model. For a hypothetical system that consists of 10 junctions including a storage tank and 12 links, the bulk ($k_b$) and pipe-wall ($k_w$) decay-rate constants of chlorine residual are assumed to be 2.0 1/day and 1.5 m/day, respectively. It was also assumed that the lower and upper limits of chlorine residual in the network are 0.2 mg/L and 0.6 mg/L. When the chlorine source is only the storage tank (without rechlorination), the high levels of chlorine residual appear near the storage tank to maintain the chlorine residuals above the lower limit over the junctions. On the other hand, the chlorine residuals in the network are distribute within the desirable range (0.2 - 0.6 mg/L) after the optimal rechlorination through five injection sites including the storage tank. In case of a real water distribution system that comprises 28 junctions including a clear well and 27 links, the bulk and pipe-wall decay-rate constants are 0.3 1/day and 0.2 m/day, respectively. Before rechlorination, the required chlorine residual at the clearwell is 5.1 mg/L to keep the chlorine residuals above the minimum level (0.6 mg/L) over the junctions. By the optimal rechlorination at five injection sites, the chlorine residuals are distributed within a desirable range of 0.6 mg/L through 2.0 mg/L, which can avoid the excess of chlorine residuals near the clear well. Consequently, total chlirine doses are decreased by 81% in the hypothetical distribution network and 69 % in the real distribution network for satisfying the minimum chlorine residuals.

  • In this study, chlorine dose at water storage tank was predicted to meet the recommended guideline for free chlorine residual in drinking water distribution system, using EPANET which is a computer program that performs extended Period simulation of hydraulic and water quality behavior within pressurized pipe networks. The results may be summarized as follows. The decay of chlorine residual by season varied considerably in the following order; in summer ($25^{\circ}C$) > spring and fall (15$^{\circ}C$) > winter (5$^{\circ}C$). For re-chlorination at water storage tank by season, season-varying chlorine dose was required at its maximum of 1.00 mg/l in summer and minimum of 0.40 mg/l in winter as free chlorine residual. The decay of chlorine residual through out the networks increased with water age spent by a parcel of water in the network except for some points with low water demand. In conclusion, the season-varying chlorine dose as well as the monitoring of water quality parameters at the some points which showed high decay of chlorine residual may be necessary to deliver the safe drinking water.

  • BACKGROUND: Unintentional residual pesticide in soil derived from preceding crops and the transfer to succeeding crops was considered a critical barrier for positive list system (PLS). Thus, an uncertain risk is predicted for ethoprophos applied at cultivation of preceding crop (Korean cabbage) to succeeding crop (spinach). METHODS AND RESULTS: Ethoprophos was treated on soil following the recommended dose and 5 times dose according to the safe use guidelines for Korean cabbage after seeding. On the 4 days after harvesting of preceding crop, spinach was sowed. The initial residual amounts of ethoprophos on soil (7.081-19.493 mg/kg) were decreased to 3.832-7.218 mg/kg until the harvest of Korean cabbage, and then finally decreased to 0.011-0.079 mg/kg after spinach cultivation. The uptake rates of ethoprophos from soil by Korean cabbage were 0.01-0.03% and distributed to root (0.150-0.903 mg/kg) and shoot (0.021-0.151 mg/kg), respectively. The residual amounts of uptake and translocation from preceding crop cultivated soil to spinach edible part were found to be below LOQ. CONCLUSION: The plant back internal (PBI) for ethoprophos is not recommended during sequential cultivation of leafy vegetables, since the residual amounts of ethoprophos in spinach were less than MRL (0.02 mg/kg).

  • The injection concentration of corrosion inhibitor increases under the pH 7, temperature of 2$0^{\circ}C$, and alkalinity of 35 mg/l (as CaCO$_3$), the corrosion rate gradually decreased. When the corrosion inhibitor of 10 mg/l is injected, the corrosion rate for carbon steel pipe, galvanized steel pipe, and copper pipe reduces for 37, 66 and 61 % respectively that it is more efficient on galvanized steel pipe and copper pipe. As a result of examination of corrosion rate at pH 6, 7, and 8 when injecting 10 mg/l of corrosion inhibitor under the conditions of 2$0^{\circ}C$ in water temperature and 35 mg/l (as CaCO$_3$) in alkalinity, the efficiency of the corrosion inhibitor increases as the pH increases. For carbon steel pipe, it does not show much a difference with the change of the pH condition, but galvanized steel pipe and copper pipe clearly show the corrosion rate depending on the change of the pH condition. The efficiency of corrosion inhibitor is low as the concentration of residual chlorine is high, but it does not show a great influence at 0.4 mg/l or less. For each pipe type, in the case of carbon steel pipe, the range of increase of corrosion speed following the residual chloride is higher than the other pipe types. In the meantime, the effect following the residual chlorine in copper pipe is low.

  • The effect of the alloy systems Al-Mg alloy and Al-Si alloy in this study on the characteristics of die-casting were investigated using solidification simulation software (MAGMAsoft). Generally, it is well known that the casting characteristics of Al-Mg based alloys, such as the fluidity, feedability and die soldering behaviors, are inferior to those of Al-Si based alloys. However, the simulation results of this study showed that the filling pattern behaviors of both the Al-Mg and Al-Si alloys were found to be very similar, whereas the Al-Mg alloy had higher residual stress and greater distortion as generated due to solidification with a larger amount of volumetric shrinkage compared to the Al-Si alloy. The Al-Mg alloy exhibited very high relative numbers of stress-concentrated regions, especially near the rib areas. Owing to the residual stress and distortion, defects were evident in the Al-Mg alloy in the areas predicted by the simulation. However, there were no visible defects observed in the Al-Si alloy. This suggests that an adequate die temperature and casting process optimization are necessary to control and minimize defects when die casting the Al-Mg alloy. A Tatur test was conducted to observe the shrinkage characteristics of the aluminum alloys. The result showed that hot tearing or hot cracking occurred during the solidification of the Al-Mg alloy due to the large amount of shrinkage.

  • To obtain the data on the risk assessment of residue levels of organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides in fresh ginseng and red ginseng extract, the residual pesticides in samples are surveyed with GC-NPD and GC-ECD for quantitative analysis and GC-MSD for qualitative analysis. The residual organophosphorus pesticides, such as diazinon, pyrimethanil, tolclofos-methyl, metalaxyl, diethofencarb, parathion, cyprodinil, tolylfluanid and kresoxim-methyl, are not detected in fresh ginseng from Punggi. The residual organophosphorus pesticides except tolclofos-methyl are not detected in fresh ginseng from Sangju. Average amount of tolclofos-methyl in fresh ginseng from Sangju are $0.054{\pm}0.008\;mg/kg$, representing $18{\pm}2%$ of MRL of 0.03 mg/kg on fresh ginseng in Korea. The residual organochlorine pesticides, such as BHC isomer, DDT isomer, aldrin, azoxystrobin, captan, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, dieldrin, difenoconazole, endosulfan-sulfate, endrin, fenhexamid, quintozene, ${\alpha}$-endosulfan and ${\beta}$-endosulfan, are not detected in fresh ginseng from Punggi and Sangju. The residual organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides in red ginseng extract from Punggi and Sangju are not detected.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was carried out to investigate residual characteristics of diethofencarb during ginseng cultivation and processing, and to establish the maximum residue limits (MRL) of ginseng and its processed products. METHODS AND RESULTS: Supervised field trials were conducted from three fields located at Seosan, Goesan and Jeongeup in Korea. Diethofencarb 25% WP was diluted by 500 times and sprayed 4 times onto the ginseng with 10 days interval. The samples were collected at 80 days after final application. The residual amounts of diethofencarb ranged from 0.074 to 0.460 mg/kg in fresh ginseng, from 0.292 to 0.720 mg/kg in dried ginseng, and from 0.208 to 0.557 mg/kg in red ginseng. These data exceeded the ginseng's MRL, 0.3 mg/kg. The processing factors of diethofencarb in processed products were found to be 2.64 and 1.99, respectively for dried and red ginseng. CONCLUSION: Given the lower residual concentration of red ginseng that goes through a more complicated process than dried ginseng, the residual concentrations of diethofencarb in processed ginseng products were found to be dependent on processing method. Therefore, it is necessary to reconsider the MRL of diethofencarb in fresh ginseng and its processed products.

  • Disinfectant residual should be maintained to achieve biological stability during distribution of treated water. The wide distribution of retention times associated with storage and transport of water in a network and the reactivity of disinfectants make it difficult to maintain adequate residuals at critical locations. Rechlorination at some intermediate locations may reduce the total disinfectant dose while keeping residuals within specified limits throughout the water distribution system. In order to select the adequate location of rechlorination for achieving to maintain of residual chlorine throughout the distribution system, EPANET was used in this study. EPANET was well predicted chlorine transport and residual loss in the distribution system. Location of rechlorination was selected to maintain 0.4mg/L of residual chlorine throughout a water distribution system by field investigation and model simulation. The quantity of chlorine may reduced 36.7% and provided smooth residual between 0.42 and 0.60mg/L, when rechlorination would be used continuously at strategic location within the distribution system.
