  • The method of substructure synthesis o. component mode synthesis(CMS) provides an effective means of dynamic analysis of very large and/or complex structures. In this study, residual dynamic flexibility attachment modes in hybrid component mode synthesis are considered for the purpose of exactly compensating the effect of higher order truncated modes. Following this way, the analysis accuracy of the synthesized structure can be improved effectively with less computational effort. In order to show the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid component mode synthesis(HCMS), numerical experiments were carried out for the models of a clamped-clamped beam. The results verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • A method for actively minimizing dynamic reaction forces in a flexible structure subject to persistent excitations is presented. One difficulty with the method, however, is that forces and moments do not converge as quickly as displacements in mathematical discretization of continuous systems, so a controller based on a truncated model of a continuous system can produce poor results. A technique using residual flexibility matrix is presented for correcting the truncated force representation. A controller designed for reaction force minimization, using the residual flexibility matrix, is applied to a model of a flexible structure, and the results are presented. Implications of various reaction force penalty combinations on the resulting control performance are also discussed.

  • The number of required modes to provide accurate force information in a truncated model of a flexible structure is investigated. In the case of modal truncation of a distributed parameter system, the difference in convergence rates between displacements and forces is discussed. The residual flexibility, a term from past literature, is used to recapture some of the lost force information in a truncated model. This paper presents numerical and experimental results of a study where the residual flexibility is used in conjunction with a Kalman filter so that accurate force information may be obtained from a small set of displacement measurements with a reduced-order model. The motivation for this paper is to be able to obtain accurate information about unmeasurable dynamic reaction forces in a rotating machine for diagnostic and control purposes.

  • A method for actively controlling dynamic reaction forces in flexible structures subject to persistent excitations is presented. Since reaction forces are not directly measured in flexible structures, reaction forces are estimated by using the Kalman filter. The estimated reaction force is used as an error signal in the adaptive feedforward disturbance cancellation controller. In order to compensate the static effect of the truncated modes in the reaction forces, the residual flexibility matrix is used with the Kalman filter. The paper presents the formulation of the reaction forces in conjunction with the Kalman filter estimator and the adaptive feedforward controller. The results show that the dynamic reaction forces at its supports in a flexible beam test rir are well suppressed.

  • A method is presented for generating the path which significantly reduces residual vibration of the redundant, flexible robot manipulator in the presence of obstacles. The desired path is optimally designed so that the system completes the required move with minimum residual vibration, avoiding obstacles. The dynamic model and optimal path are effectively formulated and computed by using special moving coordinate, called VLCS, to represent the link flexibility. The path to be designed is developed by a combined Fourier series and polynomial function to satisfy both the convergence and boundary condition matching problems. The concept of correlation coefficients is used to select the minimum number of design variables. A planar three-link manipualtor is used to evaluate this method. Results show that residual vibration can be drastically reduced by selecting an appropriate path, in the presence of obstacles.

  • Multi-stage deploying beams are useful for transporting parts or products handling in production lines. However, such multi-stage beams are often exposed to unwanted vibration due to the presence of their flexibility and time-varying properties. This paper is concerned with dynamic modeling and analysis of 2-stage axially deploying beams under gravity by using the finite element method. A variable domain finite element method is employed to develop the dynamic model. A rigorous method to account for engagement of two-stage beams during the deploying procedure is introduced by breaking the entire domain into three variable domains. Several deploying strategies are tested to analyze the residual vibrations. Several examples are illustrated to investigate the self-induced damping and the effects of deploying strategy on the vibrations.

  • Excessive vibration in flexible structures is a problem encountered in many different fields, causing fatigue of structural components. Passive techniques, though sometimes limited in their capabilities, have been used in the past to attenuate vibrations. Recently active techniques have been developed to enhance vibration control performance beyond that provided by their passive counterparts. Most often, the focus of active control methods has been to suppress structure displacements. In cases where vibration results in structure failures, displacement suppression may not be the best choice of control approaches (it can, in fact, increase dynamic loads which would be even more harmful to supports) . This paper presents two optimal control methods for attenuating steady state vibrations in flexible structures. One method minimizes shaft displacements while another minimizes dynamic reaction forces. The two methods are applied to a model of a typical flexible structure system and their results are compared. It is found that displacement minimization can increase loads, while load minimization decreases loads.

  • Excessive vibration in rotating machinery is a problem encountered in many different fields, causing such difficulties as fatigue of machinery components and failure of supporting bearings. Passive techniques, though sometimes limited in their capabilities, have been used in the past to attenuated vibrations. Recently active techniques have been developed to provide vibration control perform beyond that provided by their passive counters. Most often, the focus of active control methods has been to suppress rotating machinery displacements. In cases where vibration results in bearing failures, displacement suppression may not be the best choice of control approaches (it can, in fact, increase dynamic bearing loads which would be even more harmful to bearings). This paper presents two optimal control methods for attenuating steady state vibrations in rotating machinery. One method minimizes shaft displacements while the other minimizes dynamic bearing reaction forces. The two methods are applied to a model of a typical rotating machinery system and their results are compared. It is found that displacement minimization can increase bearing loads, while bearing load minimization, on the other hand, decreases bearing loads.

  • The objective of the paper is to clarify a methodology based on the use of the existing component mode synthesis methods for the case of two damped substructures which are coupled through a linking viscoelastic flexible substructure and for which the structural modes with free geometrical interface are used for each main substructure. The proposed methodology corresponds to a convenient alternative to the direct use either of the Craig-Bampton method applied to the three substructures (using the fixed geometric interface modes) or of the flexibility residual approaches initiated by MacNeal (using the free geometric interface modes). In opposite to a geometrical interface which is a topological interface on which there is a direct linkage between the degrees of freedom of substructures, we consider a physical flexible interface which exists in certain present technologies and for which the general framework linear viscoelasticity is used and yields a frequency-dependent damping and stiffness matrices of the physical flexible interface.
