  • It was observed that after unloading or removal of the load from the specimen subjected to bending stress, partial or full elastic spring back occurred and considerable stresses have resulted while plastic deformation was considered. ABAQUS is a suite of powerful engineering simulation programs, based on the finite element method. In this paper, it was used as the main tool to analyze elastic and plastic deformations of hi-material metal joint. In the case of elastic deformations, the results were comparable to the theoretical data. Plastic deformations and residual stresses of hi-material metal joint under bending moment were obtained by ABAQUS; where the theory needs to be studied and improved further to verify the results.

  • Plastics is commonly used in consumer electronics because of it is high strength per unit mass and good productivity. But. using, transporting, and keeping of plastic component was happened post-deformation. As time goes by and temperature is changed, the post-deformation causes the problems of exterior design and performance. But, it is difficult to estimate the post-deformation by only thermal deformation analysis. Also, the estimation technique of the pest-deformation must be easily applied to product development and it should be reliable because development time of product is limited. In the paper. the process to predict the post deformation under cyclic thermal loadings was suggested. The process was applied to the real panel, and the deformation predicted by the analysis was compared with that of real test, which showed the possibility of applying the suggested process to predict the post deformation of plastic product under thermal loadings.

  • During the last decade several different methods have been proposed for the estimation of thermal deformations in the line heating process. These are mainly based on the assumption of residual strains in the heat-affected zone or simulated relations between heating conditions and residual deformations. However these results were restricted in the application from the too simplified heating conditions or the shortage of the data. The purpose of this paper is to develop a simulator of thermal deformation in the line heating using the artificial neural network. Two neural network predicting the maximum temperature and deformations at the heating line are studied. Deformation data from the line heating experiments are used for learning data for the network. It was observed that thermal deformation predicted by the neural network correlate well with the experimental result.

  • Residual deformation of high-speed railway bridge piers is cumulative under repeated earthquakes, and influences the safety and ride comfort of high-speed trains. This paper investigates the effects of the peak ground acceleration, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and axial compression ratio on the cumulative deformation through finite element analysis. A simply-supported beam bridge pier model is established using nonlinear beam-column elements in OpenSees, and validated against a shaking table test. Repeated earthquakes were input in the model. The results show that the cumulative deformation of the bridge piers under repeated earthquakes increases with the peak ground acceleration and the axial compression ratio, and decreases with the longitudinal reinforcement ratio.

  • The block assembly of ship consists of a certain type of heat processes such as cutting, bending, welding, residual stress relaxation and fairing. The residual deformation due to welding is inevitable at each assembly stage. The geometric inaccuracy caused by the welding deformation tends to preclude the introduction of automation and mechanization and needs the additional man-hours for the adjusting work at the following assembly stage. To overcome this problem, a distortion control method should be applied. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop an accurate prediction method which can explicitly account for the influence of various factors on the welding deformation. Systematic and quantitative theoretical works to clarify the effects of various factors on the welding deformation have rarely been found. Therefore, in this paper, the effects of various factors, such as welding process and gravity on the butt welding deformation have been investigated through a number of numerical analyses. In addition, this paper proposes a simplified analysis method to predict the butt welding deformation in actual plate structure. For this purpose, a simple prediction model for butt welding deformations has been derived based on numerical and experimental results through the regression analysis. Based on these results, the simplified analysis method has been applied to some examples to show its validity.

  • The actuating performance of plate-type unimorph piezoelectric composite actuators having various stacking sequences was evaluated by three dimensional finite element analysis on the basis of thermal analogy model. Thermal residual stress distribution at each layer in an asymmetrically laminated plate with PZT ceramic layer and thermally induced dome height were predicted using classical laminated plate theory. Thermal analogy model was applied to a bimorph cantilever beam and LIPCA-C2 actuator in order to confirm its validity. Finite element analysis considering thermal residual deformation showed that the bending behavior of piezoelectric composite actuator subjected to electric loads was significantly different according to the stacking sequence, thickness of constituent PZT ceramic and boundary conditions. In particular, the increase of thickness of PZT ceramic led to the increase of the bending stiffness of piezoelectric composite actuator but it did not always lead to the decrease of actuation distance according to the stacking sequences of piezoelectric composite actuator. Therefore, it is noted that the actuating performance of unimorph piezoelectric composite actuator is rather affected by bending stiffness than actuation distance.

  • Finite element analysis and experiment are performed to investigate residual deformation induced by the repair of composite shell structures using a prepreg patch method. The finite element program is developed on the basis of a three-dimensional degenerated shell element and the first order shear deformation theory. The results analyzed for the laminated shell with free boundary conditions are compared with strains measured during the prepreg patch repair. Final residual stresses occur greatly near the patch when the laminated shell with all edges clamped is repaired using the prepreg patch. Stacking sequences of the laminated shell and patch affect significantly the residual stresses which occur even if they are the same.

  • Imprint lithography is a promising method for high-resolution and high-throughput lithography using low-cost equipment. In particular, ultraviolet-nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL) is applicable to large area imprint easily. We have proposed a new UV-NIL process using an elementwise patterned stamp (EPS), which consists of a number of elements, each of which is separated by channel. Experiments on UV-NIL are performed on an EVG620-NIL using the EPS with 3mm channel width. The replication of uniform sub 70 nm lines using the EPS is demonstrated. We investigate the nonuniformity of residual layer caused by wafer deformation in experiment with varying wafer thickness. Severely deformed wafer works as an obstacle in spreading of dropped resin, which causes nonuniformity of thickness of residual layer. Numerical simulations are conducted to analyze aforementioned phenomenon. Wafer deformation in the process is simulated by using a simplified model, which is a good agreement with experiments.

  • Despite a number of advantages of reinforced earth walls over conventional concrete retaining walls, there exit concerns over long-term residual deformation when used as part of permanent structures. In view of these concerns, time-dependant deformation characteristics of geosynthetic reinforced modular block walls under sustained loads were investigated using reduced-scale model tests. The results indicated that a sustained load can yield appreciable magnitude of residual deformation, and that the magnitude of residual deformation depends on the loading characteristic as well as reinforcement stiffness.

  • Recently there have been considerable attentions on nanoimprint lithography (NIL) by the display device and semiconductor industry due to its potential abilities that enable cost-effective and high-throughput nanofabrication. Although one of the current major research trends of NIL is large-area patterning, the technical difficulties to keep the uniformity of the residual layer become severer as the imprinting area increases more and more. In this paper we focused on the deformation of the $2^{nd}$ generation TFT-LCD sized ($370{\times}470mm^2$) large-area soft mold in the UV imprinting process. A mold was fabricated with PDMS(Poly-dimethyl Siloxane) layered glass back plate(t0.5). Besides, the mold includes large surrounding wall type protrusions of 1.9 mm width and the via-hole(7 ${\mu}m$ diameter) patterend area. The large surrounding wall type protrusions cause the proximity effect which severely degrades the uniformity of residual layer in the via-hole patterend area. Therefore the deformation of the mold was calculated by finite element analysis to assess the effect of large surrounding wall type protrusions and the flexiblity of the mold. The deformation of soft mold was verified by the measurements qualitatively.
