  • This study was conducted to investigate changes in inorganic phosphorus fractions in phosphorus accumulated plastic film house soils under cropping condition. Pot experiment was conducted with surface soils taken from plastic film house fields cultivated for 3, 8 and 16 years. Phosphorus fertilizer was applied at the rates of 0 (P0), $100kg\;ha^{-1}$ (recommended application rate. P1) and $200kg\;ha^{-1}$ (P2) as fused phosphate. Crops were grown sequentially in the order of corn-Chinese cabbage-Chinese cabbage-corn for 3 years. The content of easily soluble-P fraction was decreased with cropping. There were significantly positive relationship not only between the contents of easily soluble-P and the amounts of soil available P ($r=0.839^{**}{\sim}0.952^{**}$ for Bray-1 P, $r=0.895^{**}{\sim}0.967^{**}$ for Lancaster P, and $r=0.491^{**}{\sim}0.821^{**}$ for Olsen P), but also between the amounts of P absorbed by plants and the amounts of easily soluble P decreased ($r=0.644^{**}{\sim}0.822^{**}$). The decrease of easily soluble-P during cropping period could be described by a first-order reaction. The number of cropping times needed to decrease the content of easily soluble-P to an index level of $0.2mg\;kg^{-1}$, which is commonly reported as the desired concentration for soil P, was predicted in the range of 26~33 cropping times by using the equations. Regardless of P fertilization, the proportion of Al-P to total P was little varied during cropping period, but the proportion of Fe-P to total P increased with cropping. Although the content of Ca-P was high before cropping, the proportion of Ca-P to total P was increased with cropping. The proportion of reductant soluble-P to total P was little varied for P fertilizer treatment but was increased for no P fertilizer treatment. The residual-P was decreased during cropping period due to the absorption by crops and the conversion to other inorganic P fractions.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the residual effects of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag applied in rice paddy fields as soil conditioner one year before. The experimental fields of Lim et al. (2000) located in Youjung and Nampyung were used for this purpose. Both variety (Oryza sativa L. cv. Dongjinbyeo) and cultural practices were the same as those in Lim et al. (2000). Soil chemical properties, plant height, number of tillers per plant, yield and yield components were observed. The temporal variation of treatment mean value in soil chemical properties appeared to be similar trends in both Youjung and Nampyung experimental fields. Soil pH and Ca content were still significantly higher than those in control treatment up to July of the second season, but decreased progressively as time passed. However, the effects lasted longer as slag rate became higher. BOF slag seems to have residual effects as a soil conditioner or Ca fertilizer in soil for two years. BOF slag rate of $4Mg\;ha^{-1}$ raised soil pH almost the same as lime rate of $2Mg\;ha^{-1}$. Content of $SiO_2$ in soil applied slag appeared to be higher compared with control. Fe and Mg content in soil with slag treatment was significantly higher than that of control in 1997, but it was almost the same level as that of control in 1998. In YouJung experimental field, rough rice yield of slag teatment became higher as slage rate incresed. Slag rate of $12Mg\;ha^{-1}$ showed the highest rough rice yield of $5,400kg\;ha^{-1}$ among treatment, which was 14% higher than that of control with $4,720kg\;ha^{-1}$. Slag rate of $12Mg\;ha^{-1}$ showed relatively higher plant height and higher number of tillers at the early growth stage compared with other treatments. In NamPyung experimental field, rough rice yield was the highest at the plot of lime rate $2Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and became higher as slag rate increased. There were no significant differences in rough rice yield between lime treatment and slag treatments. Slag rate of $12Mg\;ha^{-1}$ showed the highest rough rice yield of $7,170kg\;ha^{-1}$ among slag treatment, which was 8% significantly higher than that of control with $6,670kg\;ha^{-1}$. Slag rate of $12Mg\;ha^{-1}$ showed relatively slower growth in plant height at the early growth stage, but superior growth at the later growth stage, and significantly higher number of spiklets per panicle and 1000-grain weight than that of control.

  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNAs that post-transcriptionally regulate expression of mRNAs in many biological pathways. Liver plays an important role in the feed efficiency of animals and high and low efficient cattle demonstrated different gene expression profiles by microarray. Here we report comprehensive miRNAs profiles by next-gen deep sequencing in Angus cattle divergently selected for residual feed intake (RFI) and identify miRNAs related to feed efficiency in beef cattle. Two microRNA libraries were constructed from pooled RNA extracted from livers of low and high RFI cattle, and sequenced by Illumina genome analyser. In total, 23,628,103 high quality short sequence reads were obtained and more than half of these reads were matched to the bovine genome (UMD 3.1). We identified 305 known bovine miRNAs. Bta-miR-143, bta-miR-30, bta-miR-122, bta-miR-378, and bta-let-7 were the top five most abundant miRNAs families expressed in liver, representing more than 63% of expressed miRNAs. We also identified 52 homologous miRNAs and 10 novel putative bovine-specific miRNAs, based on precursor sequence and the secondary structure and utilizing the miRBase (v. 21). We compared the miRNAs profile between high and low RFI animals and ranked the most differentially expressed bovine known miRNAs. Bovine miR-143 was the most abundant miRNA in the bovine liver and comprised 20% of total expressed mapped miRNAs. The most highly expressed miRNA in liver of mice and humans, miR-122, was the third most abundant in our cattle liver samples. We also identified 10 putative novel bovine-specific miRNA candidates. Differentially expressed miRNAs between high and low RFI cattle were identified with 18 miRNAs being up-regulated and 7 other miRNAs down-regulated in low RFI cattle. Our study has identified comprehensive miRNAs expressed in bovine liver. Some of the expressed miRNAs are novel in cattle. The differentially expressed miRNAs between high and low RFI give some insights into liver miRNAs regulating physiological pathways underlying variation in this measure of feed efficiency in bovines.

  • In the posterior maxillary area, due to resorption of the ridge after extraction and pneumatization of the maxillary sinus, the height of the alveolar ridge may not be sufficient for placement of implants. To solve this problem, sinus augmentation using both crestal and lateral approaches have been widely used. Jung et al. (2010) introduced the modified lateral approach technique, which is a simplified technique that combines the advantages of crestal and lateral approaches. The purpose of this case report is to report two cases in the posterior maxilla in which simultaneous implant placement with maxillary sinus augmentation has been performed using the modified lateral approach technique. In two female patients, 67 and 74 years old, respectively, simultaneous implant placement was performed using the modified lateral approach technique on the left maxillary second premolar and the first molar. In both patients, the residual bone height on the distal side of the maxillary second premolar was measured to be approximately 5 mm, and the residual bone height of the first molar was measured to be 2-3 mm. After flap elevation, osteotomy of the lateral window was performed in the form of a mesiodistally extended slot above the sinus floor and the Schneiderian membrane was elevated. Sequenced drilling was performed while protecting the membrane with a periosteal elevator. Bone graft and implant placement was performed after preparation of the implant site. Sufficient primary stability was achieved for each implant and sinus membrane was not perforated. After four and five months respectively, implant second surgery was performed. Clinically, the implants were observed to be stable. Implants and surrounding peri-implant mucosa were well maintained after prosthodontic treatment. In conclusion, the modified lateral approach could be a predictable and efficient technique for implant placement in the atrophied posterior maxilla.

  • The major causes of the facial bone fractures are fractures are automobile collision or other accident, and fights. Of the facial bone fractures, the nasal bone fractures are monst common. According to Schroeder et al., 50% of facial bone fractures are isolated fractures of the nasal pyramid. But the fractured nasal bone is not immediately treated as other facial bone fractures. And it is necessary to delay the treatment of the combined nasal bone fractures with other jaw bone fractures because of the difficult anesthetic techniques. Therefore there are many residual nasal deformities following a fracture; nasal hump, saddle nose and alar rim defect. Many authors have suggested the methods to correct the post-traumatic nasal deformities. We have treated several patients with several methods and this paper presents the operating methods and results.

  • Field observations have been conducted to investigate the physical environment around oyster farms in Gamak Bay. Tidal waves near the two channels at the northeast and south of the bay had almost the same amplitudes and phases. Water temperature responded sensibly to the tides, rising at high water and falling at low water, except for the northwest region. The currents more regularly varied in accordance with a tidal period as long as they are at the faster-flowing region. A considerable flow has been found near the seabed of the northwest of the bay, normally known to be a stagnant area, and also the flow was opposite to the surface flow. Average moving speeds and directions of the flow at each station coincided well with patterns of the residual currents computed by Lee ef al. [2004], except for the northwest region. The discrepancy for the northwest region is not clear but it may have resulted from the facts that the computed flow pattern represents only the case of spring tide and in addition, a northwesterly wind prevailed all the observation time.

  • This study was investigated on properties and thermostability of gelatin-degrading proteinases in the fruit of Actinidia chinensis (kiwifruit) for the industrial application. Three gelatin-degrading proteinases (PI, PII and PIII) were detected from the pulp of fruits. The molecular weights of these proteinases, PI, PII and PIII, were approximately 220 kD, 51 kD, and 26 kD respectively, on the basis of gelatin-containing SDS-PACE. The optimum pH of these proteinases ranged from 2.0 to 5.0 with a maximal activity at pH 4.0. These proteinases had a high sensitivity to E-64 and iodoacetate which are cysteine protease inhibitors, and required DTT, cysteine, and $\beta$-mercaptoethanol for their activities which are stimulators for cysteine proteases. These results indicate that these proteinases are cysteine proteinases and the proteinase PIII is actinidin (EC 3.4.22.14), based on the molecular weight and/or susceptibility against proteinase inhibitors. These proteinases were strongly activated by $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$, whereas strongly inhibited by Zn$^{2+}$ and Hg$^{2+}$. However, these proteinases have slightly different susceptibility against other cations ($Ca^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Al^{3+}$, $Ca^{3+}$. The temperature stability of proteinase PIII was more stable than proteinases PI and PII. Moreover, proteinase PIII remained stable below $50^{\circ}C$ for 48hr, showing the residual activity above 75% of the enzyme activity.

  • Genetic variance and covariance components of the linear traits and the ordered categorical traits, that are usually observed as dichotomous or polychotomous outcomes, were simultaneously estimated in a multivariate threshold animal model with concepts of arbitrary underlying liability scales with Bayesian inference via Gibbs sampling algorithms. A multivariate threshold animal model in this study can be allowed in any combination of missing traits with assuming correlation among the traits considered. Gibbs sampling algorithms as a hierarchical Bayesian inference were used to get reliable point estimates to which marginal posterior means of parameters were assumed. Main point of this study is that the underlying values for the observations on the categorical traits sampled at previous round of iteration and the observations on the continuous traits can be considered to sample the underlying values for categorical data and continuous data with missing at current cycle (see appendix). This study also showed that the underlying variables for missing categorical data should be generated with taking into account for the correlated traits to satisfy the fully conditional posterior distributions of parameters although some of papers (Wang et al., 1997; VanTassell et al., 1998) presented that only the residual effects of missing traits were generated in same situation. In present study, Gibbs samplers for making the fully Bayesian inferences for unknown parameters of interests are played rolls with methodologies to enable the any combinations of the linear and categorical traits with missing observations. Moreover, two kinds of constraints to guarantee identifiability for the arbitrary underlying variables are shown with keeping the fully conditional posterior distributions of those parameters. Numerical example for a threshold animal model included the maternal and permanent environmental effects on a multiple ordered categorical trait as calving ease, a binary trait as non-return rate, and the other normally distributed trait, birth weight, is provided with simulation study.

  • The mechanism of hydrothermally synthesizing Na-A zeolite from siliceous mudstone at a $Na_2O/SiO_2$ ratio of 0.6, a $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ 2.0 and a $H_2O/Na_2O$ 119 has been observed by IR, DTA, XRD and SEM. This mudstone is a tertiary periodic sedimentary rock and widely spreads around the Pohang area. In the early hydrothermal synthesis at $80^{\circ}C$ in an autoclave, sodium silicate and sodium aluminate were found to be preferentially reacted to generate Na-A type zeolite. Gibbsite and bayerite were also formed due to the presence of extra aluminum oxide in the feedstock. As reaction time in-creased up to 50 h, residual sodium aluminatewas reacted with siliceous mudstone, causing the Na-A zeolite crystal to grow and the hydroxylsodalite to generate. Therefore, in the $14{\sim}50\;h$ synthetic time, Na-A zeolite and hydroxylsodalite were formed. Also, if reaction time passed over 50 h, a part of the Na-A zeolite was finally redissolved and reacted with hydroxylsodalite to synthesize Na-P zeolite, generating porous surface of Na-A zeolite and disappearing hydroxylsodalite.

  • The First stars (Pop.III stars) in the universe are expected to be formed between the recombination era at z - 1100 and the most distant quasar (z - 8). They have never been directly detected due to its faintness so far, but can be observed as a background radiation at around 1${\mu}m$ which is called the Cosmic Near-Infrared Background (CNB). Main part of the CNB is thought to be redshifted Lyman-alpha from gas clouds surrounding the Pop.III stars. Until now, the COBE (COsmic Background Explorer) and the IRTS (Infrared Telescope in Space) observed excess emission over the background due to galaxies. To confirm the COBE and the IRTS results and pursue more observational evidences, we carried out the sounding rocket experiment named the Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER). The CIBER is successfully launched on July 10, 2010 at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, USA. It consists of three kinds of instruments. We report the results obtained by LRS (Low Resolution Spectrometer) which is developed to fill the uncovered spectrum around 1${\mu}m$. LRS is a refractive telescope of 5.5 cm aperture with spectral resolution of 20 - 30 and wavelength coverage of 0.7 to 2.0${\mu}m$. After subtracting foreground components (zodiacal light, integrated star light and diffuse galactic light) from the sky brightness of observed five fields, there remained significant residual emission (even for the lower limit case) consistent with the IRTS and the COBE results. In addition, there exists a clear gap at 0.7 - 0.8${\mu}m$ in the CNB spectrum over the background due to galaxies according to recent results (Matsuoka et al. 2011; Mattila et al. 2011). The origin of the excess emission could be ascribed to the Pop.III stars with its active era of z = 7 - 10.
