  • Using In-113m emitting gamma ray of 0.392MeV at radioisotope tracer the RTD (residence time distribution) of water in the flocculator of wastewater treatment facility was measured. The result was analyzed mathematically using K-RTD program constructed on the basis of CFSTR (constant flow stirred tank reactor) model. The mean residence time and the tank number are the main parameters which describe the flow behavior of the system. Those parameters were obtained in the fitting profess of the simulated curves to the experimental results. It was suggested to construct a modified numerical model to describe the bypass flow which was observed in the experiment.

  • ${\alpha}$-Waxy corn starch was used as a feed for twin-screw extrusion in order to enhance starch liquefaction with added thermostable ${\alpha}$-amylase (derived from Bacillus licheniformis). The residence time distribution and starch liquefaction were investigated. The starch liquefaction was analyzed in terms of reducing sugar contents, molecular size from gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and microstructure from scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The use of ${\alpha}$-starch contributed to the production of more reducing sugar than the use of raw starch use alone. From GPC, the effect of ${\alpha}$- starch on the molecular size reduction was shown to be small. From SEM, irregular and damaged surface were observed on the extrudate from ${\alpha}$-starch, as compared to those from raw starch. The spread of residence time distribution curves was greater with feed of ${\alpha}$-starch than raw starch, indicating that ${\alpha}$-starch was hard to flow forward during extrusion. This could be improved by increasing the feed moisture content and barrel temperature of extruder.

  • The effect of heat loss rate on NOx formation of $CH_4/air$premixed flame were examined numerically in a perfectly stirred reactor. The following conclusions were drawn. Under the adiabatic wall condition, an increase in the residence time causes a remarkable increases in NOx emission. Under the heat loss conditions, however, NOx decreases significantly as the heat transfer coefficient and residence time increase. As the heat loss rate increases, Thermal NO mechanism and Re-burning NO mechanism play an important role in the NOx reduction, but Prompt NO mechanism and $N_2O$-intermediate NO mechanism lead to the increase in NOx production. Although the NOx formation is actually related to complex NOx mechanism with the changes in the heat transfer coefficient and residence time, it was found that NOx concentration can be represented by independent Thermal NO mechanism. From these results, new NOx correlation combined with the heat loss rate and residence time was suggested for predicting the NOx concentration in a practical $CH_4/air$premixed combustor.

  • This study examined how previous financial and time transfers from mothers to their adult children affect co-residence of elderly mothers and their adult children in South Korea. This study employed multi-level logistic analysis considering hierarchical relationship structures between mothers and their adult children. A sample of 1,925 elderly mothers and 7,460 adult children was extracted from data which were from the first wave (in 2006) to the forth wave (in 2012) of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA). The result of the analysis suggested that past financial transfer from mothers to their adult children was not significantly associated with co-residence between elderly mothers and their adult children. However, likelihood of co-residence increased with the amount of time transfer, which was measured by unit of time for elderly mothers' caring for their grandchildren. This study discussed that long-term reciprocal relationships between elderly mothers and their adult children are built by intergenerational support relationships. However, the result that showed only grandmaternal child care affected intergenerational co-residence implies that intergenerational care may play an important role in intergenerational reciprocal relationships. Through these findings, this study suggested theoretical, practical, and policy implications.

  • With the recent industrial development, accidental pollution in riverine environments has frequently occurred. It is thus necessary to simulate pollutant transport and dispersion using water quality models for predicting pollutant residence times. In this study, we conducted a field experiment in a meandering reach of the Sum River, South Korea, to validate the field applicability and prediction accuracy of RAMS+ (River Analysis and Modeling System+), which is a two-dimensional (2D) stream flow/water quality analysis program. As a result of the simulation, the flow analysis model HDM-2Di and the water quality analysis model CTM-2D-TX accurately simulated the 2D flow characteristics, and transport and mixing behaviors of the pollutant tracer, respectively. In particular, CTM-2D-TX adequately reproduced the elongation of the pollutant cloud, caused by the storage effect associated with local low-velocity zones. Furthermore, the transport model effectively simulated the secondary flow-driven lateral mixing at the meander bend via 2D dispersion coefficients. We calculated the residence time for the critical concentration, and it was elucidated that the calculated residence times are spatially heterogeneous, even in the channel-width direction. The findings of this study suggest that the 2D water quality model could be the accidental pollution analysis tool more efficient and accurate than one-dimensional models, which cannot produce the 2D information such as the 2D residence time distribution.

  • The vertical profiles of the natural $^{210}Po,\;^{210}Pb\;and\;^{234}Th$, activities were measured at the upper 150 m or 200 m of water column from west-east intersection in the east-southern coastal area of the Korea Peninsula during the period from 26 to 29 April 1994 to compare the removal rates (residence time) and removal processes for $^{210}Po\;and\;^{234}Th$. At the inshore stations, the $^{210}Po$ activity was generally higher in the thermocline and its under layer than in the surface mixed layer, while represented the reversed pattern at the offshore stations. However, the $^{210}Pb$ activity decreased generally with depth. Also, the activity of $^{210}Po$ relative to its parent $^{210}Pb$ was deficient in the water column above the main thermocline, but was slightly excess or close to equilibrium in the thermocline and its under layer. The vertical profiles for the activity of $^{210}Pb$ relative to its parent $^{226}Ra$ showed the reversed pattern with the vertical variation of $^{210}Po$ excess (or deficiency). The $^{234}Th$ activity was significantly lower in the surface mixed layer and thermocline than in the deeper layer. The residence time of $^{210}Po$ ranged from 1 to 4 years at the five stations except station E8 that showed yet long residence time (approximately 10 years). The long residence time at the station E8 may resulted from the thicker surface mixed layer and subsequent the vertical mixing of $^{210}Po$ which was recycled in the lower surface mixed layer compared to at the other stations. Also, the residence time of $^{210}Po$ was shorter at the inshore stations than at the offshore stations. However, the residence time of $^{234}Th$ ranged from 52 to 74 days at all station without the significant variation, was very much shorter relative to the residence time of $^{210}Po$. The correlation between the removal rate of dissolved $^{234}Th$ and the concentration of total suspended matter (TSM) was generally positive. Therefore, it seems that the major route of the removal mechanism of $^{234}Th$ from seawater in the surface mixed layer is via adsorption onto suspended particle surfaces (most likely inorganic particles) and subsequent settling to the bottom layer. Between the removal rate of dissolved $^{210}Po$ and the concentration of chlorophyll-a was positively good correlation. Consequently, most likely the removal of $^{210}Po$ may be occurred by uptake to organisms (mainly such as planktonic debris or fecal pellets) and subsequent settling.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the stress variation according to Hitler's residence using EEG data. Hitler's residence, one of the most monumental buildings, is designed as a grand and overbearing space, giving the visitor a sense of psychological pressure when moving from a high space to low space. Based on the above background, this paper constructs Hitler's residence using virtual reality and measure the changes of the beta waves which are known to be related with stress when the floor level moves from high to low space in Hitler's residence built in virtual space. The results of the experiment are as follows; when moving from high to low space, the subjects' stress was high and at the same time brain waves variation was increased greatly due to changes in space.

  • A Lagrangian particle tracking model coupled with the ECOM3D were used to study on the behavior of fresh water released from the Namgang Dam in terms of residence time in Kangjin Bay, South Sea, Korea. Model was calibrated until skill cores for elevation, velocity, temperature and salinity are satisfied over 85%. In the numerical simulation, particles were released in 1 hour time interval from the northern boundary. The different patterns of particle trajectory are identified under the varying dynamics from tidal to density-driven current. The average residence time of total particles are approximately 65.9 hours in the entire Kangjin Bay. The average residence time were increased from 55~65 to 70~80 hours during maximum discharge period. Discharge rate of fresh water and average residence time in the Kangjin Bay is high correlated with correlation coefficient over 0.81.

  • A radioisotope tracer experiment was carried out in the submerged fixed bioreactor of a dye wastewater treatment facility to evaluate the flow behaviors in the 6 compartments of the reactor and to find any possible factors which may affect to the efficiency of the process. Approximately 20mCi of $^{131}I$ was injected into the system as a tracer and 8 radiation detectors were placed in the 6 compartments and at the inlet and the outlet of the system to measure the change of the tracer concentration with time. Using the Perfect Mixers in Series Model the measured data were analyzed to calculate the mean residence time and the characteristic parameters of the flow in the system. The mean residence time of the system was calculated as 17 hours which is 76% of the designed MRT(22.3hr). Among the 6 compartments, the first compartment doesn't show the characteristic of perfect mixer, whereas, the other 5 compartments are working as perfect mixers. The output response of the first compartment is fit well with the simulated output of a model which consists of a perfect mixer with an exchange volume. It indicates that a quarter of the tank volume is working as a dead volume or an exchange volume. From the measured residence time distributions in each compartment, the appropriate sampling times after the change of operational condition of the electron beam accelerator were evaluated.
