  • This study proposes the method for determining the Muskingum channel routing model parameters based on the assumption of linear system. The proposed method was applied to the Chungju dam basin for the evaluation. Additionally, the rainfall-runoff was repeated for the Yeongchun-Chungju dam reach using seven rainfall events observed. Summarizing the results is as follows. First, the concentration time and storage coefficient of a channel reach formed by the subdivision can be expressed as the difference between the concentration times and storage coefficients of upstream and downstream basins. The storage coefficients of the channel reach estimated is equal to the storage coefficient of the Muskingum channel routing model and the weight factor can be simply estimated using the ratio between the concentration time and storage coefficient. Second, the weight factor of the Muskingum model is in inverse proportion to the Russel coefficient, which is in between 0.4166 and 0.625 when considering the Russel coefficients generally applied. Finally the application to the Yeongchun-Chungju dam reach showed that the proposed method is still valid regardless of the limitations such as the uncertainty of the observed data.

  • In this study, reservoir routings for 1 hour-50 year precipitation frequency were carried out at the Engineering Water Fall and the Amphitheater located at the downstream of Seoul National University Dam. Main analysis was focus on the following matters: (1) storage amount by the tank; (2) reduction of the outflow and the peak water surface elevation; (3) change of phase lag time; and (4) design of new boxes at the inlet and outlet of storage tank. As for the storage tank of $25,000m^3$ built in the Amphitheater area, the tank induced 49.43 % storage effect, 28 min. phase lag time, and reduced the peak outflow by 49.64 %. In addition, the peak water surface elevation was lowered by 35 cm compared with that of $15,000m^3$ storage tank. It is concluded that combined management of previous storage facility and new underground storage tank would control the excessive rainfall runoff efficiently.

  • The compilation of a flood hazard map is an efficient technique in managing areas at risk of flooding in the case of a dam-break. A scenario-based numerical modeling approach is commonly used to compile a flood hazard map related to dam-break and to determine the model parameters that capture peak discharge, including breach formation and progress, which are important in the modeling method. This approach might be considered less reliable if an existing model is used without local validation. In this study, a dam-break model is linked to a routing model to identify flood-risk areas in the case of failure of the Sandae Reservoir Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. Model parameters are extracted from a DEM, and maps of land use and soil texture. The simulation results are compared with on-site investigations in terms of inundation and depth. The model reproduces the inundation zone with reasonable accuracy.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze lateral inflow hydrologically. The IUH of lateral inflow is sum of the impulse responses of total cells in basin. This IUH bases on the Muskingum channel routing method, which hydrologically re-analysed to represent it as a linear combination of the linear channel model considering only the translation and the linear reservoir model considering only the storage effect. Rectangular and triangular basins were used as imaginary basins and IUH of each basin were derived. The derived IUH have different characteristics with respect to basin's shape. The storage coefficient of lateral inflow was also derived mathematically using general definitions of concentration time and storage coefficient. As a result, the storage coefficient of lateral inflow could be calculated easily using basin's width, length and hydrological characteristics of channel.

  • An analytical diffusion model for flood routing with backwater effects and lateral flows is developed. The basic diffusion equation is linearized about an average depth of (H + h), and is solved using the boundary conditons which take into account the effects of backwater and lateral flows. Scouring phenomenon around pier which affects on the support function of pier and the stabilization if river bed is a complex problem depending on flow properties and river bed state as well as pier geometry. therefore, there is no uniting theory at present which would enable the designer to estimate, with confidence, the depth of scour at bridge piers. The various methods used in erosion control are collectively called upstream engineering, HEC-RAS Model, underwater blasting. They consist of reforestation, check-dam construction, planting of burned-over areas, contour plowing and regulation of crop and grazing practices. Also included are measures for proper treatment of high embankments and cuts and stabilization of streambanks by planting or by revetment construction. One phase of reforestation that may be applied near a reservoir is planting of vegetation screens. Such screens, planted on the flats adjacent to the normal stream channel at the head of a reservoir, reduce the velocity of silt-laden storm inflows that inundate these areas. This stilling action causes extensive deposition to occur before the silt reaches the main cavity of the reservoir.

  • The use of an Incremental Dynamic Programming (IDP) for real-time flood control operation is investigated. The optimization model has been applied for the Namgang and Andong hypothetical flood control system in the Nakdong river basin. The objective of the operation is defined to minimize the maximum flow at the confluence of downstreams from the two reservoirs. The results are compared to the direct summation of the flood routing results from individual flood control simulation run. It shows that peak flow at the confluence is reduced markedly by reducing peak outflows from individual reservoirs and by balancing the time of the peak release between the two reservoirs.

  • The linear reservoir rainfall-runoff system was developed as a rainfall-runoff event simulation model. It was achieved from large modification of runoff function method. There are six parameters in the model. Hydrologic losses consist of some quantity of initial loss and some ratio of rainfall intensity followed by initial loss. The model has analytical routing equations. Hooke and Jeeves algorithm was used to model calibration. Parameters were estimated for flood events from '84 to '89 at Seomyeon and Munmak stream gauges, and the trends of major parameters were analyzed. Using the trends, verifications were performed for '90 flood event. Because antecedent fainfalls affect initial loss, future researches are required on such effects. The estimation method of major parameters should also be studied for real-time forecasting.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the applicability of Single Linear Reservoir (SLR) model for runoff computations of small river basins in Korea. In the existing watershed flood routing methods the storage coefficient(K), which is the dominant parameter in the model, has been proposed to be computed in terms of the wqtershed characteristics. However, in the prsent study, the rainfall characteristics in addition to the watershed characteristics were taken into account in the multiple regression analysis for more accurate estimation of storage coefficient. The parameters finally adopted for the regressions were the drainge are, mean stream slope of the watershed, and the duration and total dffective amount of rainfalls. To verify the applicability of SLR model the computed results by SLR model with K determined by the regression equation were compared with the observed gydrographs, and also with those by other runoff computation methods; namely, the Clark method, nakayasu's synthetic unit hydrograph method and Nash model. The results showed that the present zSLR model gave the best results among these methods in the case of small river basins, but for the whatersheds with significant draingage area the Clark method gave the best results. However, it was speculated that the SLR model could also be accurately applied for flood compuatation in large wagersheds provided that the regression for storage coefficients were made with the actual data obtained in the large river basins.
