Relationship between Nurse Staffing and Changes in Pain Level, Infection Severity, and Tissue Integrity: Skin and Mucous Membranes

  • Purpose: The study assessed whether nurse staffing was associated with 3 nursing sensitive outcomes used in intensive care unit (ICU) nursing care plans. Methods: This study was a retrospective and descriptive study using clinical data extracted from the data warehouse of a large acute care hospital in the Midwest. One-way analysis of variance was used to analyze the records of 578 ICU patients admitted from March 25 to May 31, 2010. Results: 79 Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) outcomes were used in the nursing care plans. The 3 most commonly used NOC outcomes (Pain Level, Infection Severity, and Tissue Integrity: Skin and Mucous Membranes) were analyzed to determine their relationship to nurse staffing. As a nurse staffing ratio, the skill mix of nursing caregivers ranged from 0.74 to 1 with an average of 0.90. This skill mix of nursing caregivers significantly differed among the changes in Infection Severity scores. However, the mean difference was only 0.02. Conclusion: The results did not support that greater nurse staffing was associated with better outcomes. More research is still needed to determine the usefulness of Pain Level, Infection Severity, and Tissue Integrity: Skin and Mucous Membranes in evaluating the impact of nurse staffing.

산업체 연계 프로젝트 기반 학습(PBL)을 활용한 성형해석 실습 교과목 운영 사례 연구 (Case Study on Education of Metal Forming Simulation Practice Subject through Industry-linked Project Based Learning)

  • The purpose of this study is to conduct Project Based Learning (PBL) in collaboration with industry experts to operate practical subjects in an industry-university-linked teaching method. PBL is a teaching method in which students can learn through actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects. For a long period of time, PBL methodologies have been found to be especially effective in engineering education. This case study deals with the operational results of a practice subject which has been conducted over three years from 2017 to 2019 in Korea University of Technology and Education. The course is for the 4th grade students in the school of mechatronics engineering. The results of the surveyed learning outcomes (for example, Program Outcomes and Course Learning Outcomes) have been analyzed and reflected in the next years for the Continuous Quality Improvement. By working on practical projects linked to industry, students have been able to develop so-called 4C's capabilities which are Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication and Collaboration.

  • Professional communication skills in writing and speaking with multiple and complex audiences are required to engineers in society of modern technology. In this paper, we proposed the effective assessment system for the Program Outcomes on the communication skill competence(PO7), which is one of the 12 program outcomes stipulated by ABEEK (Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea). To ensure logical connectivity of the assessment system, we carefully selected the performance criteria by defining the core concept of "written communication" and "verbal communication". Based on the selected performance criteria, the whole process of creating assessment tools and rubrics was explained in detail. It can be expected that the assessment for the Program Outcomes on the communication skill competence would be more systematic by using the proposed assessment system.

  • Kunsan National University obtained accreditation for its Architecture & Building Engineering Program from the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education in Korea (ABEEK) in 2004 and has offered an ABEEK-accredited degree pathway ever since. Then, in 2018, the university introduced the course-embedded outcomes assessment system as per ABEEK's KEC2015 accreditation criteria. One year into its implementation, the new system allows the measurement and assessment of 10 program outcomes covering 19 curricular modules and 1 non-curricular licensing examination. The system incorporates the four areas of specialization within architectural engineering as well as the three course categories of the math, science, and computer; liberal arts; and engineering core modules under the accreditation scheme. It also takes the students' academic years into account, especially for the mandatory modules offered to all students. Its rubric clarifies the performance criteria, performance level, assessment tools, objectives, and modules. The 2018 course-embedded outcomes assessment system is an ever-evolving structure with regular CQI: Continuous Quality Improvements along the circular process of system establishment → implementation → evaluation as per the virtuous cycle model required for an accredited engineering program.

Arthroscopic Excision of Medial Knee Plica: A Meta-Analysis of Outcomes

  • Purpose: A meta-analysis was performed to assess the outcomes following surgical intervention for medial knee plica. Materials and Methods: A literature search of Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL and Cochrane CENTRAL was performed using relevant key words. The primary outcome was patient-reported postoperative scores of "good" and "excellent". Meta-analyses were performed using a random effects model. Results: The literature search identified 731 articles. After removing duplicates and those not meeting the inclusion criteria, 12 articles reporting on a total of 643 knees were included for analysis, and of these, 7 articles including 235 knees were used for meta-analysis. The overall rate of good and excellent outcomes following surgery was estimated at 84.2% (95% confidence interval [CI], 72.8-91.4). In those cases that had non-surgical therapy prior to surgery, the rate of good and excellent outcomes of surgery was estimated at 76.1% (95% CI, 60.1-87). Conclusions: Arthroscopic surgical management of symptomatic medial knee plica results in favourable outcomes. Our results suggest that arthroscopic surgical excision should be considered as a treatment modality in patients with pathological medial plica disease of the knee either as a first-line treatment or when symptoms have not responded to non-surgical interventions. Silicone radial head prostheses revisited: do they have a role in today's practice? A systematic review of literature on clinical outcomes

  • Background: Silicone radial head prostheses (SRHP) are considered obsolete due to reports of frequent failure and destructive silicone-induced synovitis. Considering the good outcomes of modern non-radial silicone joint implants, the extent of scientific evidence for this negative view is unclear. The aim of this research was to systematically analyze the clinical evidence on complications and outcomes of SRHP and how SRHP compare to both non-SRHP and silicone prostheses of other joints. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted through the Cochrane, PubMed, and Embase databases. Results: Eight cohort studies were included, consisting of 142 patients and follow-up periods ranging from 23 months to 8 years. Average patient satisfaction was 86%, range of 71%-100%, and 58 complications were seen, but no cases of synovitis. These outcomes were in line with non-SRHP. Four case series with 11 cases of synovitis were found, all due to implant fractures years to decades after implantation. Six systematic reviews of currently used non-radial silicone joint implants showed excellent outcomes with low complication rates. Conclusions: Since SRHP have satisfactory clinical results and an acceptable complication rate when selecting a patient group in suitable condition for surgical indications, it is considered that SRHP can still be chosen as a potential surgical treatment method in current clinical practice.

공공기관의 정보시스템 아웃소싱에 미치는 영향 요인과 도입 성과 (Influence Factors and the Introducing Outcomes over IT Outsourcing in the Government Offices)

  • 본 연구는 IT 아웃소싱에 미치는 영향요인과 도입성과를 실증적으로 분석하였다. IT 아웃소싱에 미치는 영향 요인은 조직요인(정보시스템 성숙도, CEO의 지원), 거래요인(자산 특수성, 불확실성, 정보시스템의 사용정도), 위험요인(안전성(보안)의 위험, 비용의 증가위험, 자율성 상실의 위험)으로 설정하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 조직요인에서 정보시스템 성숙도와 CEO의 지원요인은 도입성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 변수로 분석되었고, 거래요인에서는 정보시스템 사용정도 변수만이 도입성과에 영향을 미치는 변수로 분석되었으며, 자산의 특수성 요인과 불확실성 요인은 도입성과에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 분석되었다. 위험요인에서는 안전성(보안)의 위험, 비용의 증가 위험 요인만이 도입성과에 영향을 미치는 변수로 분석되었고, 자율성 상실의 위험요인은 도입성과에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 분석되었다.

  • 공학교육인증에 있어서 프로그램학습성과는 공학교육의 질적 향상 정도를 판가름하는 중요한 기준이며 가장 핵심이 되는 부분이다. 한국공학교육인증원은 프로그램학습성과를 공과대학 졸업생들이 졸업과 동시에 반드시 지녀야 하는 핵심 역량 12가지로 규정하고 있으며 인증을 받고자 하는 모든 공학교육프로그램은 전공 관련 지식을 포함하여 이를 달성하기 위한 교육과정을 구축하고 달성 및 지속적인 개선을 하고 있는지의 여부를 보이기를 요구하고 있다. 여기서 프로그램학습성과는 크게 두 가지를 만족시켜야만 하는데첫째, 공학프로그램은 졸업생이 12가지 능력과 자질에 대해 달성하고 졸업함을 보장할 것에 대한 요구와 둘째, 12가지 능력 및 자질을 교육시키는 프로그램의 교육 수준의 지속적인 개선이다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 이러한 한국공학교육인증원의 취지에 맞는 평가를 실시하기 위해 프로그램학습성과 평가의 CQI와 QC를 실현을 위해 갖추어야 할 체계인 구축 모형을 소개하고 한국공학교육인증원의 기준에 알맞은 실천전략을 제시하고자 한다.

K-EP(K-Engineering Professional) 자격을 위한 졸업생역량 평가방안 연구 (A Study on Graduate Attributes Assessment for K-EP (K-Engineering Professional) Qualification)

  • The present study aims to demonstrate that it is possible to objectively evaluate the competency (referred to as graduate attributes or program outcomes) of graduates of engineering education programs. To strengthen the link between engineering education accreditation and the qualification/certification system of engineering professionals, referred to as K-Engineering Professional (K-EP), individually assuring the quality of accredited graduates using multiple-choice test as main assessment tool is proposed. Test questions related to the basic vocational skills of NCS are developed for seven of the 10 program outcomes of the ABEEK KEC2015. The three program outcomes, PO1, PO3, and PO5, which need to fully accommodate the characteristics of each disciplinary field, are excluded. A pilot test involving graduates of eight accredited programs is conducted. Applying on Rasch model based on Item Response Theory (IRT), the item difficulty, fit and discrimination of multiple choice test are demonstrated. The pilot study strongly suggests that individual competency evaluation is possible at a certain level for seven program outcomes tested. For PO1, PO3, and PO5, however, questions that address the characteristics of each disciplinary field need to be devised. If a suitable pool of questions is built, it can be used as a program outcomes assessment tool by the accredited programs.
