Possibilities of reinforcement learning for nuclear power plants: Evidence on current applications and beyond

  • Nuclear energy plays a crucial role in energy supply in the 21st century, and more and more Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) will be in operation to contribute to the development of human society. However, as a typical complex system engineering, the operation and development of NPPs require efficient and stable control methods to ensure the safety and efficiency of nuclear power generation. Reinforcement learning (RL) aims at learning optimal control policies via maximizing discounted long-term rewards. The reward-oriented learning paradigm has witnessed remarkable success in many complex systems, such as wind power systems, electric power systems, coal fire power plants, robotics, etc. In this work, we try to present a systematic review of the applications of RL on these complex systems, from which we believe NPPs can borrow experience and insights. We then conduct a block-by-block investigation on the application scenarios of specific tasks in NPPs and carried out algorithmic research for different situations such as power startup, collaborative control, and emergency handling. Moreover, we discuss the possibilities of further application of RL methods on NPPs and detail the challenges when applying RL methods on NPPs. We hope this work can boost the realization of intelligent NPPs, and contribute to more and more research on how to better integrate RL algorithms into NPPs.

AR콘텐츠를 활용한 기후위기그림책 패키지의 개발 사례 (A Case Study of the Development of Climate Crisis Picture Book Package Using AR Contents )

  • Climate crisis is one of the most urgent and serious threats to the right to life. As AR picture books are particularly effective for safety education, this study aimed to produce an AR picture book featuring animals that are endangered due to the climate crisis. In order to increase the educational effect and enhance the climate sensitivity, this study developed a children's activity workbook (with follow-up activities) and a teacher's guide (with lesson plans) as a package. To this end, market research and surveys were first conducted. Next, through the management and support of the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development, this research team produced a climate crisis themed AR picture book package through expert advice, help from outsourcing companies, and field application. The package was promoted through publicity in various forms of media. The contents of the AR-using picture book package of this case study were introduced and then advantages and disadvantages were discussed.

  • 뉴스페이스 패러다임에서 바라본 큐브위성 개발과정의 역설은 복잡하고 험난한 시스템 엔지니어링 절차와 관련이 있다. 상업적 관점에서 큐브위성은 비용 측면은 물론 제작 기간도 짧아 스타트업 주도의 뉴 스페이스 산업구조에서 접근성이 뛰어난 우주자산이다. 하지만 큐브위성 경연대회와 같이 대학 주체의 개발팀들이 마주할 개발과정은 생각과는 너무도 다르다. 이는 큐브위성 또한, 시스템 공학기반의 체계사업이 제시하고 있는 길고도 험난한 과정을 통해 위성을 개발하고 검증받기 때문이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 체계사업에 익숙하지 않은 개발자들에게 큐브위성의 각 개발 단계에 적용되는 시스템공학의 역할과 기능을 전달하고자 한다.

  • 창업 초기 창업가의 역량이 미진하고, 자원이 풍부하지 않으면서 네트워크에 한계가 있는 스타트업은 지속적 스케일업이 어렵다. 본 연구는 ICT 스타트업 중에서 스케일업에 성공한 �� 스타트업을 사례로 선정하여 ERIS 모델을 기반으로 ICT 스타트업이 성공하는 첫 단계에서 발생하는 스케일업 과정에 대한 사례분석을 진행했다. 분석결과, 창업가의 경험적 역량, 다양한 산업 간의 지식의 융합, 공공기관 주도의 연구개발 과제의 참여, 고객과 기업간의 소통 채널 운영, 프로젝트형 캠페인의 활용이 ICT 스타트업의 스케일업에 중요하게 작용하는 것으로 나타났다. 학술적으로 본 연구는 ERIS 모델이 향후 ICT 스타트업의 스케일업과 신시장 기업 성공요인 분석 모델로써 의미가 있음을 확인 및 검증한 것에 그 의미가 있다. 또한 실무적으로는 ICT 스타트업의 초기 시장 경쟁력을 확보하고 스케일업을 하기 위한 전략적 전개의 참조사례로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

The Promotion of Startups in Tainan Technopolis

  • Taiwan's economy has been characterized by the strong existence and continuous creation of small and medium-sized enterprises. This phenomenon is commonly regarded to be the result of a culturally embedded strong entrepreneurial spirit. In the process of developing a high-technology industry in southern Taiwan, linking a newly established science park with existing local industries was one of the major challenges. This article reviewed the development history of Tainan Technopolis. Following a concise review of Southern Taiwan Science Park's struggle against becoming an assembly of spillover establishments from Hsinchu Science Park, the authors focused on the efforts of incubating startups. Although only an initial study, the authors demonstrated the roles of National Cheng Kung University and Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration in introducing a two-track incubation system based on collaboration between the two institutions and startups.

  • Identification of steady-state is the first step in developing a fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) system. In a complete FDD system, the steady-state detector will be included as a module in a self-learning algorithm which enables the working system's reference model to "tune" itself to its particular installation. In this study, a steady-state detector of a residential air conditioner based on moving windows was designed. Seven representing measurements were selected as key features for steady-state detection. The optimized moving window size and the feature thresholds was suggested through startup transient test and no-fault steady-state test. Performance of the steady-state detector was verified during indoor load change test. From the research, the general methodology to design a moving window steady-state detector was provided for vapor compression applications.

Optimal Pricing Strategies for Open Source Support Providers

  • The market for commercial open source software (OSS) has been rapidly growing with the proliferation of OSS. One way to commercialize OSS is the support model, which has been adopted by leading OSS firms such as Red Hat and JBoss. Despite the growing interest in OSS commercialization, little research has provided OSS support providers with a pricing guideline. In this paper, we examine the optimal pricing strategies for OSS support providers. Our benchmark is a monopoly case in which we investigate a startup software vendor's incentive to choose the OSS support regime over the proprietary one. Then we extend the model to a duopoly case in which OSS under the support regime competes against proprietary software. We characterize the conditions under which the OSS support model is viable under competition. We believe that our results offer insights to the OSS vendors who consider commercializing their OSS with a support model.

창업기업관점에서 바라본 투자자의 투자결정요인에 관한 연구 : 물산업 창업기업을 중심으로 (A Study on Investors Determinants Addressed by Startup Entrepreneurs : In the Center of Startups in Water Industry)

  • 환경에 대한 관심의 증가와 4차산업혁명 기술의 발전으로 지속적인 성장이 기대되는 글로벌 물시장에서 국내 물산업은 공공성과 안정성에 대한 강조로 기술 발전 및 혁신적 성장에 한계를 보이고 있다. 이러한 한계 극복을 위해서 최근 한국수자원공사는 오픈이노베이션에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있는 스타트업을 중심으로 국내 물산업 생태계를 활성화하면서 동시에 물산업 혁신을 위해 물산업 창업기업을 발굴, 육성하고 있다. 본 연구는 물산업 창업기업이 국내 물시장을 혁신시키고 글로벌 물시장을 선도하는 유니콘 기업으로 성장하기 위해 반드시 필요한 벤처투자 유치의 성공률 제고를 목적으로 하고 있다. 본 연구는 선행연구를 참고 후 초기 투자자 대상 FGI기법을 통해 투자결정요인에 대한 주요요인 5개 항목과 세부요인 17개 항목을 도출하였다. 도출된 투자결정요인을 토대로 41명의 창업기업 대표를 대상으로 조사를 진행하였다. 응답자 그룹은 투자유치 경험이 있는 창업기업과 투자유치 경험이 없는 창업기업으로 구분하여 비교분석하였고 분석방법은 AHP 기법을 활용하였다. 분석 결과 투자유치경험이 있는 기업과 초기투자자의 투자결정요인의 우선순위가 유사함을 확인할 수 있었고, 투자유치경험이 없는 그룹은 투자를 자금 조달의 방법으로만 생각하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 물산업 창업기업을 발굴, 육성하고 있는 기관에게 육성중인 창업기업의 투자유치율 제고를 위한 시사점을 제안하였다.

  • The thermal energy from nuclear fission is transferred to the steam generator which is a kind of a large heat exchanger. After the feedwater is injected into the steam generator and absorbs the thermal energy, it is converted into the steam. This steam goes into the turbine. The balance between the generated energy and the consumed energy is required for the nuclear power plant to be stable. For the purpose of which, the feed water, a parameter for energy transfer, should be controlled in stability. Usually, the nuclear power plants are operated in base load in the view of power system for the stability of fission system. Therefore, though there will be almost no unbalance, there can be some instability from unbalance in case of startup/shutdown or disturbance. In this case, the controllability of feedwater pump is very important for the quick recover of stability.

의류제조 직업능력개발교육 학습자의 학습참여동기가 교육 및 취업서비스만족도와 직업능력개발성과에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Learner's Motivation on Professional Development in Vocational Education of Clothing Manufacturing)

  • This study investigated how learning motivation affects satisfaction with training and employment services and its performance for participants in government-supported job skill development program of the clothing industry so as to provide fundamental data for developing a training program that fosters professionals and relieves the labor shortage in the clothing industry. 180 copies of questionnaires were statistically analyzed by SPSSWIN 21.0. Most trainees were low-income citizens in their 40s and 50s. They were divided into highly educated or low-educated. The results of the research are as follows: when the trainees were motivated by the goals of getting a certificate or a job, employment service satisfaction levels were influenced meaningfully. Secondly, educational satisfaction levels and occupational ability development also scored highly. Therefore, it is important to strengthen instructors' competency. Instructors must be required to have onsite experience so that they can provide authentic education that can be applied to the work field. The government should establish a compulsory training session for the trainers along with an incentive program so that they can catch up with up-to-date technology and trend. Third, the research shows that supporting business startup and job placement is important. Follow-up management systems should be provided in cooperation with relevant institutions of employment and business startups. Either outsourcing or placement of professional advisors is also needed.
