  • The paper is intended to explore the spatial relations between flooded buildings and urban expansion phenomena by employing urban expansion intensity index and hotspot analysis methods for the case of Gangneung. Two major results are as followed; first, flooding susceptible areas are found in the regions where the highly intense development occurs within a short period of time, so called pseudo-urbanization. Second, less flooded buildings exist in old towns where it is believed that there is the lack of urban infrastructure services. This study indicates the possibility that the highly intense development and pseudo-urbanization with a relatively short time period relate to flooded building events. In addition, the possibility leads to another issue that new developments might be increasing the flooding vulnerability worse than before, particularly, to the adjacent old towns. For the better understanding, it is desirable to have further related case studies in the near future.

  • Purpose - This study investigates the effects of foreign investor ownership on firm innovation and the different stages of the firm innovation process for business group affiliation (affiliated firms) and nonaffiliated firms. Design/methodology - Research and development (R&D) intensity is used as a proxy for firm innovation. We use a sample of 7,655 firm-year observations of Korean listed firms from 2001 to 2015. To identify the distinct features of business group affiliation and how foreign investor ownership affects firm innovation, we divide the sample into affiliated and non-affiliated firms. Moreover, we classify total R&D expenditures as research and development expenditures. Findings - This study finds a positive relationship between foreign investor ownership and innovation in non-affiliated firms. However, the foreign investor ownership's role in facilitating firm innovation does not influence business group affiliation. Moreover, the results show that foreign investor ownership encourages firms to increase research expenditures, which is the amount spent in the early stages of a firm's R&D process. Originality/value - Existing studies have overlooked the distinct features of business group affiliation and the different characteristics of research and development expenditures. Thus, this study considers the distinct features of business group affiliation and investigates how foreign investor ownership affects different stages of R&D activities.

  • Non-point pollution adversely affects the water system and its influence is increasing. In order to manage such nonpoint source pollution, the government has conducted studies on LID (Low Impact Development) facilities and various efficiency evaluations. In this study, the actual installed permeable block facility among the various LID facilities was analyzed the effluent reduction rate, the residual rainfall analysis, the runoff duration time and the reduction rate of the maximum inflow and outflow for the rainfall runoff control and the results were compared the other facilities. The analysis results show that the reduction efficiency is high in order of impermeable block, filter type permeable block, and clearance type permeable block, and the graph showing the relationship between the rainfall intensity and the runoff duration time is presented. This graph can be helpful in the design of facilities such as the facility capacity selection according to the reproduction period of the permeable block facility similar to this.

  • Survivability of an aircraft has been greatly threatened by the development of a weapon system using infrared. Therefore, the infrared stealth technology is a very important technique to improve the survivability of an aircraft. In this study, the infrared signal of an aircraft was analyzed which corresponding to the aircraft surface temperature and environmental conditions with various surface conditions(especially emissivity changed). Based on the analyzed infrared signal, the optimized surface emissivity was suggested to reduce the average contrast radiance and contrast radiant intensity(CRI). In addition, we confirmed that the infrared contrast radiant intensity between the aircraft and the background can be minimized through an appropriately controlled surface emissivity of the aircraft at specific background.

  • Brightness temperature spectra acquired from FTIR(Fourier Transform Infrared)-SCADS (Standoff Chemical Agent Detection System) could be available for detection and identification of the chemical agents and pollutants from different background. IR spectrum range of 770 to 1350 $cm^{-1}$ is corresponding to "atmospheric window". A 2-dimensional(2D) brightness temperature spectrum was drawn from combining each data point through automatic continuous scanning of FTIR along with altitude and azimuth. At higher altitude, temperature of background was decreased but scattering effect of atmospheric gases was increased. Increase in temperature difference between background and blackbody in SCADS at higher temperature causes to increases in peak intensity of $SF_6$. This approach shows us a possibility that 2D visual information is acquired from scanning data with a single FTIR-SCADS.

  • Laser beam is directional and small in divergence angle so that it is well qualified to deliver high intensity infrared energy into a coming MANPADS threat for aircraft survivability. The threat will be deceived and loose tracking of a target when it is exposed to the laser beam modulated relevant to the track mechanism of the threat. The laser beam goes through scattering inside the seeker of the threat and reach the detector in a stray light form, which is a critical phenomenon enabling jamming of the seeker. The mechanism of the laser beam based jamming against a pulse modulated infrared seeker is shown. Simulations are carried out to support the understanding of how the jam technique works.

  • We report on the variation of infection and histopathological change of Microcotyle sebastisci parasitic on cultured rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, in Namhae Islands and Kamak Bay from April to October in 1995. Microcotylosis due to Microcotyle sebastisci occurred among cultured rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. This parasite was not found on the host fish from June to July. Parasite sites were mainly consist of 2nd and 3rd gill arch`s filaments of rockfish. Also, the sites were secreted in large quantity of mucus with a very small bleeding. In Namhae Islands, maximum values of prevalence, relative density and mean intensity were found on September 1995, as 40.0%, 30.7 and 76.8, respectively. In Kamak Bay, maximum values of prevalence, relative density and mean intensity were obtained on October 1995, as 46.0%, 40.5 and 88.0, respectively. Histopathological changes of the heavily infested gills were showed necrosis, epithelium of the gill filaments underwent hyperplasia with fusion of the lamella and filamental clubbing. And a bacterial colony is invaded on the surface of lamella epithelium.

  • We studied the effect of $Co^{60}$ gamma-radiation on the FBGs by a variation of grating the fabrication parameters. The FBGs were fabricated in a different UV KrF laser intensity using the same boron co-doped photo-sensitive fiber and exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 33.8 kGy. According to the experimental data and analysis results, We confirmed that the laser intensity for grating inscription has a highly effect on the radiation sensitivity of the FBGs and the radiation-induced Bragg wavelength shift by the change of laser process condition showed a difference more than about 30 %.

  • Fatty acid contents were measured in the cultures of the flagellate green algae Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher under different conditions of light intensity, duration of light, and temperature. Duration of light and temperature, in particular, affected the growth rate of D. tertiolecta. The maximun cell number reached $2.32{\times}10^6$ cells/ml. The division rate per day was 1.97 in the exponential phase. The analysis of fatty acids obtained from various conditions showed that the lipid mainly contained C16, C18:3$\omega$3 fatty acids and there was no significant level of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as EPA and DHA. Polyene fatty acid increased with decreasing temperature and light intensity did not influence on fatty acid composition. The increasing duration of light enhanced the growth of D. tertiolecta, whereas polyene($\omega$3) slightly increased with decreasing the light period.
