An Exploration of Learning Environmental Factors Affecting Student Cognitive Engagement: Implications for Instructional Design Research

  • As it was argued that students' cognitive engagement can be, at least in part, modified by individual or learning environmental factors, prior studies have attempted to identify the factors explaining the variability of students' cognitive engagement. This literature review has shown that students' cognitive engagement can be altered by various elements in the learning environment design such as factors related students' perceptions of teaching quality, characteristics of tasks and learning activities, teachers' behaviors during instruction, classroom goal structures, the integration of student oriented learning, action learning, problem-based learning, and constructivist learning, and academic disciplines. Based on the review, this study suggests that more studies are required to focus on understandings how the integration of instructional design principles into courses and the levels of student cognitive engagement in these courses are related. Also, an investigation of direct and indirect effect of learning environments taking into account students' personal factors would provide a more accurate picture of the relationship between learning environmental factors and students' cognitive engagement.

Bridge Resource Management Training Programs in Korea and Their Effectiveness

  • Objective: This study aims to introduce the bridge resource management (BRM) training courses implemented in Korea and to analyze their effectiveness in several views. Background: BRM training will be a mandatory course for crew members of ships from 2017. At this stage, it is needed to check if the BRM training courses implemented until now was effective to the Korean maritime safety and to investigate if there are more effective training methods. Method: The effectiveness of BRM training intervention in Korea was compared with that of the other countries, using Kirkpatrick's (1976) training evaluation framework. Kim (2012)'s data on the BRM training effectiveness were re-analyzed in order to check if the effects of BRM training are dependent on the bridge work experience. Results: Many BRM training courses has been opened in Korea. However, the methods to assess BRM training effects used in Korea focused on the survey of subjective satisfaction level, not investigating trainees' attitude and behavior change. On the other hand, the effectiveness of BRM training was higher to the bridge officers with long work experience than with shorter work experience. Conclusion: The contents of BRM training should be changed to effectively apply to the context of the real-world exercise and be differentiated depending on the work experience. Research on the methods to measure the BRM training effectiveness is also more required. Application: The results of this study will aid to develop the BRM training courses for bridge officers of ships in the BRM training institutions.

경관지수 패턴 분석을 이용한 산지개발사업의 산림파편화 영향범위 예측 (Prediction of Fragmentation Impact Range of Forest Development Analyzing the Pattern of Landscape Indexes)

  • In South Korea the need of sustainably managing development on forest lands has required to develop a new approach to estimating environmental impacts on forest surrounding development sites in a scientific manner. As for forest-related development, two types of development were selected: golf courses and industrial complexes. Using Fragstats 4.2, the fragmentation effects and patterns of each type by forest area within project sites and buffer zones ranging from the outside of project sites up to 2,000 meters were analyzed. As a result, golf courses were strongly related to a group of fragmentation indexes: CA, NP, PD, TE, LSI, TCA, NDCA and CONNECT, whereas industrial complexes were associated with CA, NP, PD, TE, LSI and CONNECT. Among them, NP, LSI, TCA and NDCA of golf courses were considered as representative indexes reflecting the average impact ranges of each sub-group by forest area, and focussing on the size of core areas. In the case of industrial complexes, PD, TE and LSI were the representatives, vulnerable to the composition of given landscape. For two case studies, one for golf courses and the other for industrial complexes, they showed there existed a difference between the average of a group and the individual results. Therefore, to minimize the variations in impact range within a group, it is needed to analyze more individual cases. This study proved there was a distinction between project types in terms of the range of environmental impact. To effectively and comprehensively manage forest development, further research on analyzing other development types related to forests with more cases is needed.

공업계 고등학교 수학교과와 전문교과간의 연계성에 관하여 - 전자과를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Relationship between Mathematics and Major Subjects of Technical High School. - Focused on the Electronic subjects -)

  • Technical high school aims at educating students to acquire fundamental skill and technology required for being competent technicians, to be creative in adjusting themselves to the changing industrial society, and to do self-realization and find their ways toward the future on their own. To attain that goal and maximize learning effect, mathematics education is very important as prerequisite learning for technical subjects, as most technical courses in technical high school are basically based on mathematics. The purpose of this study was to discuss how mathematics education could be successfully linked to technical courses in an attempt to make it function properly as prerequisite learning for major subjects and facilitate students' technical learning. For that purpose, what problems the mathematics components of major subjects and the curriculum had was examined and the way to offer better education was presented. And there are some suggestions regarding mathematics education: First, technical mathematics should be newly inserted into technical high school curricula to help students learn major subjects in more efficient way. Second, most technical high schools are expected to just require tenth graders to complete a 10-stage mathematics course. In that case, they might find difficulties in learning major subjects when they are in their 11st and 12th grade. The curriculum should be designed to have 11st and 12th graders take mathematics education. Third, many students find a job after graduation, but the growing number of students go on to university to receive more education in the same field. Accordingly, there is a need to enlarge continuous progress plan, rather than completion-type one, to make students well-grounded technically. And mathematics should be taught in more classes as prerequisite subject for major courses. Fourth, mathematics elements necessary for each major subject should be outlined and announced to schools so that they could reorganize mathematics and major courses appropriately.

Oral Cancer Early Detection - a Pressing Need for Continuing Education in Jordan

  • Aims: To identify deficiencies in the knowledge of general medical (GMPs) and dental practitioners (GDPs) regarding early detection of oral cancer, to compare differences between subgroups, and to identify educational needs for continuing education courses on this subject. Materials and Methods: 165 GDPs and 165 GMPs were directly interviewed to assess their knowledge about oral cancer using a pre-tested survey. Knowledge scores were generated from correct responses of participants to factual questions about oral cancer. Results: Few participants (15.2% of GDPs and 12.8% of GMPs) reported that they attended any continuing education courses on oral cancer during their professional career. Most participants (81.6% of GDPs and 86.3% of GMPs) admitted that their knowledge about oral cancer was not up to date and that they would need to attend continuing education courses on oral cancer if available. A few significant differences were identified between groups regarding knowledge about risk factors, clinical presentations and diagnostic techniques but the overall knowledge scores showed no significant difference between GMPs and GDPs. Conclusions: The present study identified several deficiencies in the knowledge of GMPs and GDPs regarding risk factors, clinical presentations, and diagnostic techniques of oral cancer. Interventions to correct these defects through properly designed continuing education courses are required.

국내외 기록관리학 대학원 교육과정에 관한 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Curriculum of Graduate Schools of Archival Sciences in Korea and the Foreign Countries)

  • 본 연구는 미국, 캐나다, 영국, 호주의 23개 기록관리학 대학원과 국내 25개 기록관리학 대학원의 교육과정과 교과목을 조사하고 기록관리 지식범주를 중심으로 비교·분석하였다. 국내와 국외의 평균 과목수는 비슷하나 국외는 대학마다 필수과목을 설정하였고 국내는 필수과목을 거의 설정하지 않았다. 북미는 모든 지식범주가 개별 교과목으로 개설되었지만, 영국과 호주는 아웃리치, 지도, 옹호와 전문직 지식범주에서 개별 교과목이 개설되지 않았다. 한국은 아웃리치, 지도, 옹호와 전문직 지식, 정보기술 지식범주에서 개별 교과목이 별도로 개설되지 않은 반면, 역사학과 행정학 관련 과목이 세분화되어 있었다. 우리나라는 기록관리 교과목 개편을 위해 가이드라인과 인증기준을 제정하여 기록전문가가 배워야 할 지식범주를 설정하는 것이 시급하며, 디지털 기록을 전문적으로 관리할 수 있는 정보기술 지식범주의 확충이 필요하다.

2020년 전국한의과대학 기초한의학 및 기초의학 교육현황 조사 (A Survey on the Educational Status of Basic Korean Medicine and Basic Medical Science in Colleges of Korean Medicine in 2020)

  • Objectives: This study was aimed to present a summary and analysis of a survey on the educational status of basic Korean medicine and basic medical science in colleges of Korean medicine nationwide. Methods: The data on the curriculum and weekly education plans were acquired in the first half of 2020. Data showing the educational status and contents of basic Korean medicine and basic medical science were extracted. Results: Most of the colleges were providing a subject-based education. All subjects of basic Korean medicine were included in the required courses for majors, and most of them appeared to have developed and been using common main textbooks and standardized educational contents. However, there were some subjects in which the education period was dispersed until the 3rd and 4th grades, or in which discussions to develop and use common textbooks and standardized educational content were required. Most of the subjects of basic medical science were also educated as required courses for majors, but there were some subjects with a low curriculum establishment rate, and these could be considered as areas to be reinforced first when reorganizing the curriculum. Conclusions: It is expected that the findings of this study would be a basis for exploring the ways to concrete changes that are desirable and also realistically feasible when reorganizing the curriculum of colleges of Korean medicine in the near future.

포커스 그룹을 이용한 치과위생사 커뮤니케이션 교육에 관한 질적연구 (Qualitative Research on Communication Education of Dental Hygienist by Focus Group Interview)

  • 본 연구는 치과위생사에게 요구되는 커뮤니케이션 교육에 관한 임상가와 교육자의 견해를 확인하기 위해 치과의사, 치과위생사, 교수의 초점집단면접을 진행하였고, 각 초점집단의 견해를 해석하고 개념화하여 분석한 결과, '커뮤니케이션 교육시기와 방법', '교과목 표준화와 교육환경', '커뮤니케이션 역량 평가', '커뮤니케이션 교과목에 대한 인식'이라는 4개의 핵심범주와 '교육시기', '교육방법', '임상현장실습', '표준화된 교과목의 부재', '교수역량 향상', '평가방법', '국가고시 도입', '교수와 학생의 태도'라는 8개의 하위범주를 확인하였고 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 임상가 및 교육자 초점집단은 공통적으로 인문사회학적 소양은 대학교육이 선행되어야 한다고 진술하였다. 다만, 치과위생사 초점집단은 임상현장에서의 시행착오적 학습도 효과적인 교육이라고 강조하였다. 교수 초점집단은 대학졸업 이후에도 커뮤니케이션 교육의 연속성을 위해 보수교육이 제공되어야 한다고 강조하였다. 임상가 및 교육자 초점집단은 공통적으로 치과 의료기관에서 발생할 수 있는 환자 불만사례를 적용한 역할극을 요구하였다. 교수 초점집단은 교과목 학습목표와 실습모듈 표준화를 요구하였고, 교육 환경 인프라가 구축되어야 한다고 하였다. 더불어, 커뮤니케이션 교과목 담당 교수의 역량을 강화하기 위한 커뮤니케이션 교과목 연구회가 필요하다고 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 치과위생사의 커뮤니케이션 역량 계발을 위하여 임상현장의 요구에 부응하는 교육개발이 필요함을 확인하였고, 치과위생사 커뮤니케이션 역량강화를 위한 교육의 바람직한 방향을 제안할 수 있는 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

2년제 대학 애완동물 관련과 교육과정 분석 (A Curriculum Analysis of Pet - Related Departments in Colleges)

  • 본 연구는 2003년 이후 신설되어 주요 전공실습과목을 운영한 2년제 15개 대학 애완동물 관련과의 교육과정 실태를 분석하고자 하였다. 이에 따라 재학생 및 관련업체 재직자의 교과목 선호도를 분석하여 국내 펫 산업체제의 구조에 적합한 직업전문인으로서 애완동물 관련과 교육과정 개발과 방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 또한 이를 통해 국내 반려동물 문화산업과 교육과정의 공통지표를 창출하고자 함에 그 목적을 두었으며 분석한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 재학생의 선호도와 산업체의 요구도가 동일하게 높은 교과목을 교육과정에 편제하고 운용해야 한다. 둘째, 교양과목은 기초능력 함양을 위한 문화이해능력에 포함되는 반려동물문화와 관련된 교과목이 개설되어야 한다. 셋째, 전공과목은 전문직업인이 될 수 있도록 현재의 주요 전공실습과목과 함께 반려동물매개치료와 관련된 교과목이 개설되어야 한다. 넷째, 이를 위해서는 전공실습실의 기계기구 매입과 기자재가 확보된 시설관리가 이루어져야 한다. 다섯째, 전공실습과목이 전공이론과목으로 대체 되어 있는 일부 애완동물 관련과의 교육과정이 개편되어야 한다. 여섯째, 표준화될 수 있는 애완동물 관련과의 교육과정과 이를 평가하는 교육과정 평가기구가 설치되어야 한다. 일곱째, 대학의 경영자는 반려동물 문화산업과 교육과정 운영에 적합한 전공실습실과 이에 대한 시설투자를 지속적으로 실행해야 할 것으로 보인다.

수요자 관점에서 커피 전문점 종사원을 위한 교육 프로그램 (A Study on the Education Programs for Employees in Coffee Restaurants from the Employers' Viewpoint)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 수요자 관점의 커피 전문점 종사원을 위한 교육 프로그램은 어떤 교과목을 이수해야 하는지 알아보고자 현재 커피 관련 교과목을 개설한 대학의 외식경영, 외식 서비스, 커피 교과목에 대한 중요도와 수행도를 분석하는데 있다. 분석방법은 빈도분석과 T-test, IPA 분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과는 첫째, 커피 관련 교과목에 대한 중요도와 수행도는 전체적으로 커피 전문점 종사원들이 인식하는 교육 교과목은 중요도 보다 수행도가 낮게 나타났다. 그 중에서 원가관리와 커피학 이론에서 큰 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 교육 교과목의 중요도와 수행도의 IPA 분석에서는 I사분면은 약점 항목으로 원가 관리, 외식마케팅, 커피학 이론 과목이 해당이 된다. II 사분면은 유지 항목으로 외식 서비스, 커피 추출 실습, 에스프레소, 카페라테와 카푸치노, 라떼아트 과목이 해당된다. III사분면은 필요성이 결여되는 과목들로 외식경영, 외식 프렌차이즈, 서비스 실무 영어, 커피 로스팅 과목이 해당된다. IV사분면은 중요도는 낮으나 수행도가 높은 과목들로 산업체 현장 실습 과목이 해당된다. 연구의 한계점으로는 선행 연구의 부족으로 인하여 커피 전문점 종사원의 특징적인 요소를 반영하지 못하였으며, 설문지역을 수도권으로 한정하였기 때문에 표본이 전체 커피 전문점을 대표했다고 할 수가 없다고 생각된다.
