  • Purpose: This study proposes a process for evaluating the preventive maintenance policy for a system with degradation characteristics and for calculating the appropriate preventive maintenance cycle using time- and condition-based maintenance. Methods: First, the collected data is divided into the maintenance history lifetime and degradation lifetime, and analysis datasets are extracted through preprocessing. Particle filter algorithm is used to estimate the degradation lifetime from analysis datasets and prior information is obtained using LSE. The suitability and cost of the existing preventive maintenance policy are each evaluated based on the degradation lifetime and by using a minimum repair block replacement model of time-based maintenance. Results: The process is applied to the degradation of the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane in a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant to evaluate the existing preventive maintenance policy. Conclusion: This method can be used for facilities or systems that undergo degradation, which can be evaluated in terms of cost and time. The method is expected to be used in decision-making for devising the optimal preventive maintenance policy.

  • This study is a basic research for the estimation of the value of unpaid household labor within the national economy system to be reflected in the related policy-making. By measuring economic value of unpaid household labor and estimating the ration to GDP, this study attempted to confirm the productivity of the unpaid household labor and thus contribute to the improvement of socio-economic status of women. Especially, it focused on the development of a standard of estimating unpaid household labor as a method applicable to the present economic and legal system. To organize the method of economic valuation of unpaid household labor and calculate the ration to GDP, this study used three approaches: replacement cost method individual function, replacement cost method generalist and opportunity cost method. Although the estimated result revealed that the economic value of unpaid household labor showed a great extent of deviation according to the estimating methods and the wage rate, total value of household labor ranged from one hundred and thirty eight to two hundred and thirty trillion wens, about 28-48% of GDP in Korea.

  • Interval caching is one of the representative caching strategies used in multimedia streaming systems. However, there has been no theoretical analysis on interval caching. In this paper, we present an optimality proof of the interval caching policy. Specifically, we propose a caching performance model for multimedia streaming systems and show the optimality of the interval caching policy based on this model.

  • The energy efficiency of memory systems is an important task in designing future computer systems as memory capacity continues to increase to accommodate the growing big data. In this article, we present an energy-efficient last-level cache management policy for future mobile systems. The proposed policy makes use of low-power PCM (phase-change memory) as the main memory medium, and reduces the amount of data written to PCM, thereby saving memory energy consumptions. To do so, the policy keeps track of the modified cache lines within each cache block, and replaces the last-level cache block that incurs the smallest PCM writing upon cache replacement requests. Also, the policy considers the access bit of cache blocks along with the cache line modifications in order not to degrade the cache hit ratio. Simulation experiments using SPEC benchmarks show that the proposed policy reduces the power consumption of PCM memory by 22.7% on average without degrading performances.

  • Due to the advantages of fast read/write operation and low power consumption, SSD(Solid State Drive) is now widely adopted as storage device of smart phone, laptop computer, server, etc. However, the shortcomings of SSD such as limited number of write operations and asymmetric read/write operation lead to the problem of shortened life span of SSD. Therefore, the block replacement policy of SSD used as cache for HDD is very important. The existing solutions for improving the lifespan of SSD including the LARC scheme typically employ the LRU algorithm to manage the SSD blocks, which may increase the miss rate in SSD due to the replacement of frequently used block instead of rarely used block. In this paper we propose a novel block replacement scheme which considers the block reuse interval to effectively handle various data read/write patterns. The proposed scheme replaces the block in SSD based on the recency decided by reuse interval and age along with hit ratio. Computer simulation using workload trace files reveals that the proposed scheme consistently improves the performance and lifespan of SSD by increasing the hit ratio and decreasing the number of write operations compared to the existing schemes including LARC.

  • The cache structure, which is designed for assuring fast accesses to frequently accessed data, resides on the various levels of computer system hierarchies. Many studies on this cache structure have been conducted and thus many page-replacement algorithms have been proposed. Most of page-replacement algorithms are designed on the basis of heuristic methods by using their own criteria such as how recently pages are accessed and how often they are accessed. This data-retrieval process in computer systems is analogous to human memory retrieval process since the retrieval process of human memory depends on frequency and recency of the retrieval events as well. A recent study regarding human memory cognition revealed that the possibility of the retrieval success and the retrieval latency have a strong correlation with the frequency and recency of the previous retrieval events. In this paper, we propose a novel page-replacement algorithm by utilizing the knowledge from the recent research regarding human memory cognition. Through a set of experiments, we demonstrated that our new method presents better hit-ratio than the LRFU algorithm which has been known as the best performing page-replacement algorithm for DBMS caches.

  • This study is concerned with cost analysis in periodic maintenance policy. Generally periodic maintenance policy in which item is repaired periodic interval times. And in the article minimal repair is considered. Minimal repair means that if a unit fails, unit is instantaneously restored to same hazard rate curve as before failure. In the paper periodic maintenance policy with minimal repair is as follows; Operating unit is periodically replaced in periodic maintenance time, if a failure occurs between minimal repair and periodic maintenance time, unit is replaced by a spate until the periodic time comes. Also unit undergoes minimal repair at failures in minimal-repair-for-failure interval. Then total expected cost per unit time is calculated according to maintenance period and scale parameter of failure distribution. Total cost factors ate included operating, fixed, minimal repair, periodic maintenance and replacement cost Numerical example is shown in which failure time of system has erlang distribution.

  • Maintaining a complex repairable system can be achieved by repairing, replacing, or any other activities. This paper proposes a joint optimization policy that is composed with ordering and replacing under minimal repair for the complex system. For this purpose, we derive the expected cost due to the minimal repair, ordering, downtime, inventory costs, and salvage value of units that follow generally distribution. Some properties about the optimum ordering policy that are suggested for our purpose shows that the optimum ordering policy minimizing the expected cost is either one of the two typical policies : (1) the original unit is replaced as soon as the ordered spare is delivered, or (2) the delivered spare is used as inventory part until the original unit fails.

  • This study presented a model that can enable a reliability analysis for the repair and replacement cycle of a building by using background repair and replacement data and expert opinion as foundation data and applying Monte Carlo Simulation. The presented model offers the time of the repair and replacement of building elements for the period of a year, and supports the prediction of repair and replacement and expenses demand in advance while planning the maintenance of a building. In addition, the model will significantly reduce the risks to the building owner with regard to maintenance decisions. In addition, when a person in charge of the maintenance of large-scale building assets is having difficulties making decisions regarding the repair and replacement of existing building elements due to a lack of background data to support a long-term policy on the repair and replacement requirements, an engineering solution that can ensure the adequacy of this is provided. In summary, it can be largely divided into three study results. First, a method of estimating the repair and replacement cycle that can deal with the development of a construction system was developed. Second, a probabilistic methodology that can quantify the risk of the repair and replacement cycle was proposed. Third, the proposed model can be used as a means of supporting designer and constructor in making decisions for the life cycle plan of a building during a construction project.
