  • Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a tailor-made material that is used as a filling material in dentistry. GIC is cured by an acid-base reaction consisting of a glass filler and ionic polymers. When the glass filler and ionic polymers are mixed, ionic bonds of the material itself are formed. In addition, the extra polymer anion reacts with calcium in enamel or dentin to increase adhesion to the tooth tissue. GICs are widely used as adhesives for artificial crowns or orthodontic brackets, and are also used as tooth repair material, cavity liner, and filling materials. In this review, the current status of GIC research and development and its prospects for the future have been discussed in detail.

  • Cartilage defects are common and painful conditions that affect people of all ages. Although many techniques have developed, none of the current available treatment options is satisfactory. Recent advances in biology and materials science have pushed tissue engineering to the forefront of new cartilage repair techniques. The purpose of this study is to determine effective regeneration method for tissue-engineered cartilage. A serum free medium was developed for cartilage tissue engineering. Chondrocyte passage number was found to influence greatly on cartilage tissue formation in vivo. Injectable, biodegradable polymer matrix was developed for chondrocyte transplantation through injection. Transplantation of chondrocytes mixed with the injectable matrices resulted in the cartilage formation in nude mice's subcutaneous sites and rabbit knees. This study may lead to the development of tissue-engineered cartilage appropriate for clinical applications.

  • Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was developed in early 1990s and has been successfully used for root perforation repair, root end filling, and one-visit apexification. MTA is composed mainly of tricalcium silicate and dicalcium silicate. When MTA is hydrated, calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) and calcium hydroxide is formed. Formed calcium hydroxide interacts with the phosphate ion in body fluid and form amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) which finally transforms into calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA). These mineral precipitate were reported to form the MTA-dentin interfacial layer which enhances the sealing ability of MTA. Clinically, the use of zinc oxide euginol (ZOE) based materials may retard the setting of MTA. Also, the use of acids or contact with excessive blood should be avoided before complete set of MTA, because these conditions could adversely affect the hydration reaction of MTA. Further studies on the chemical nature of MTA hydration reaction are needed.

  • Nickel base brazes containing boron and silicon as melting point depressants are used extensively in the joining and repair of hot-section components in next generation nuclear reactor and aero-engine. Therefore, the present study has investigated the preliminary applicability of nickel based alloying nano powders. Nano Ni-based alloying powders synthesized by Pulsed Wire Evaporation (PWE) method. It's powder morphology and phase transformation temperature were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The powder particle size was approximately 10${\sim}$100nm and exhibits a quite even equiaxed shape. The results of DSC measurement show that both the nano Inconel 625 nano powder and Inconel 718 nano powder presents similar liquidus temperatures approximately $1373^{\circ}C$ and $1380^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • NDE(Nondestructive examination) detects a flaw or discontinuity in materials. Flaws detected by the pre-service or in-service examinations shall be sized for the purpose of analysis and repair. A flaw that is initiated from the surface is difficult to determine its depth by NDE. The depth of the surface flaw can be measured using an ultrasonic diffracted wave. To find the optimum standard for ultrasonic parameter(For example, frequency & size of transducer), a mock-up test and simulation were established and studied. This inspection technology may show the depth sizing possibility of the flaw down to nearly two(2) mm.

  • Epoxy resin has less reaction shrinkage, has better water proofing and thermal resistance than other repairing materials, to it has been applied broadly to repair and finish buildings and infrastructures. Although the ambient temperature constructed is varied with the seasons and epoxy resin has to mix with appropriate hardener due to the non self-hardening, as the real construction of it, the ambient temperature is ignored and the blending ration of epoxy resin and hardener is fixed. Also, because of the hardening time is aimed to temperature condition and the tolerance of blending ratio, we investigated the variation of viscosity according to ambient temperatures and hardener ratios. As a results of study, we can select the economical blending ratio of the epoxy resin and hardener according to site situation.

  • Nowadays, polymer-cement mortars are widely used in construction field(floorings and pavements, water-proofings, adhesives, repair materials, deck coverings, anti-corrosive linings) Because of excellent performance such as high tensile and flexural strength, waterproofness, excellent adhesion, good durability, improved wear and chemical resistances. This article presents the results of experimental study that investigates the effect of ambient temperature on the strength properties of polymer-modified cement mortar. Results show that when increasing the polymer proportion in mortar on different ambient temperature, the compressive strength and flexural strength are decreased, and also alkali resistance is decreased.

  • As recent buildings often use low-quality concrete materials, are constructed defectively, and are put in extreme environmental conditions, many of them show the shortening of life resulting from the corrosion of reinforcing rods by salt damage, carbonization, freezing and thawing, cracking. This in turn raises the cost of repair and maintenance, so it is required to extend the life of structures through enhancing the durability of concrete. In response to the demand, researches on high-durability concrete are being made actively focused on the maximum water-cement ratio, the maximum unit quantity, the minimum cover thickness, the addition of mineral admixtures, etc. With this background, the present study examined the basic physical properties of concrete containing admixtures for enhancing the durability of concrete.

  • In this study, various materials such as epoxy material, urethane material, cement material, and acrylic material are used to solve the water leakage occurring in underground structures. However, in the reality that the durability is insufficient and the effect is insufficient, it is aimed to improve the repairing effect by using cement and acrylics n combination. As a first study, we tried to verify the performance of rapid micro cement and cement paste and to improve the performance by checking the product properties. Three types of micro cement are evaluated. Three types of micro cement are used: fiber inclusion, fiber unfolding, and cement paste. When the material is selected for micro cement, it is applied to the field to understand the maintenance effect and durability.

  • Metal-bonded diamond impregnated tools are being increasingly used in the processing of stone and ceramics, road repair, petroleum exploration, etc. Although the main tool wear mechanisms have been identified, the scientific background is inadequate and fundamental research has to be carried out to better understand the tool field behaviour. This work addresses the complex issues of modelling abrasive wear of the metallic matrix under laboratory conditions. The generated data indicates that the matrix wear resistance can be assessed in a simple manner; whereas tests carried out on diamond impregnated specimens may aid prediction of the tool life in abrasive applications.
