A Simulation Study on the Overhaul Repair Shop of Weapon System (전면정비방식의 무기체계 정비공장에 대한 시뮬레이션 연구)

  • Overhaul and repair service means the sequential processes of disassembly, repair and reassembly for a product which has been used for a long time. Overhaul is required for the companies producing airplanes, ships, trains, military weapons and heavy industrial equipments which are very expensive and have a long life cycle. The most important performance measure of the overhaul repair shop is usually the lead time. Thus, how to design the manufacturing system to meet the delivery date is a major concern in overhaul repair shop. This paper introduces the case study of an overhaul repair shop producing military weapon systems with the 3D simulation tool, $QUEST^{TM}$. At first, the characteristics of overhaul shop and what should be considered for simulation modeling are explained. Then, various simulation scenarios including two types of disassembly systems, one is flow line system and the other is cell system, are discussed with the results of simulation experiments.

  • For the continued airworthiness of aviation products, aviation authority requires that every manufacturer should provide ICA(Instruction of Continued Airworthiness) to their users, and the users should follow it by themselves or using another approved maintenance agent. To reduce the cost and improve performance quality of maintenance activities, lots of users tries to outsource this job. To perform maintenance or repair of other owned air products, an air carrier and aviation maintenance companies should obtain AMO(approval of maintenance organization). It means AMO is a postulation to enter MRO(Maintenance Repair and Overhaul) market. For that, this paper discusses the comparison of requirements and procedures of AMO system between Korea and US to help understand the AMO system, and then, tries to point out what improvement should be made to Korean AMO system to be more effective, efficient and safe.

  • Purpose - This research explores the impacts of third-party logistics (3PLs) within the aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to explore the role of collaborative relationships for improving outsourcing. Globalization and time based competition have changed business environments and challenged the conventional management strategies that are related to core competencies and operational models. Organizations are forced to devise innovative practices in which logistics outsourcing to 3PLs offers significant advantages. Research design, data, and methodology - This case study was conducted within a leading global aircraft MRO organization whose reach spans across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas. The methods used face to face semi-structured interviews, validated through further focus group discussions. Results - These findings highlight the effectiveness of collaborative relationships on their role to improve outsourcing and also demonstrated that MROs gain several advantages from 3PL arrangements. However, any gaps in outsourcing management elevates potential risks to organizations as well, which could result in reputational, operational and financial losses. Conclusions - Although generalizability is not possible due to the case study approach, generality suggests that in order to reduce reputational, operational and financial risks, enhanced collaboration with 3PLs is recommended to optimize outsourcing arrangements.

  • In many cases, it is more practical and economical to repair a system than to replace the whole system or to perform a complete overhaul when it fails. The age replacement policy with minimal repair at failure is considered. The system is replaced every time its age reaches at $T_0$. For each intervening failure only minimal repair is done. The minimal repair times in a renewal period are increasing in the sense that the minimal repair times constitute a strictly increasing geometric process. The long-run expected cost rate Is obtained and the properties of the existence and the uniqueness of the optimal policy minimizing the long-run expected cost rate are derived.

  • MRO(Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) industry is growing with the increase in the global aviation market. Especially considering the Chinese aviation market, MRO industry in the Asian region has a growth potential. In the Asian region, Singapore is a country successfully developed MRO industry ahead of South Korea and its heart is the Singapore A*STAR. In this paper, made an analysis of successful cases for Singapore A*STAR and through the aviation technical organization, development of the domestic MRO industry and aviation R&D plan is proposed.

  • Since the global economic crisis in year 2008, the world civil helicopter market has been growing recently. According to the market outlook in the next decade, the demand of civil helicopter will be driven by the demand of Private & Corporate, Oil & Gas, Off-shore and EMS(Emergency Medical Service) usages. On the other side, the demand of military market will be driven by the modification and upgrading for life extension or performance enhancement than the new helicopter development for replacing old models. To summarize these situations, the demand of MRO(Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) market has also been on the rise because of the demand due to above several usages in civil side and the life-extension in military side. Through the MRO market analysis for characteristics, developmental trends and a supply chain, this paper describes that the potential of MRO business is considerably large as a propulsive power of domestic helicopter industry. And also, it proposes the construction direction of MRO network because the domestic industry must make the developmental awareness and reliability a stepping-stone towards own helicopter.

Optimal Replacement Policies for the Availability of a Repairable System (수리 가능한 시스템의 가용도를 위한 최적 교체정책)

  • In many cases, it is more practical and economical to repair a system than to replace the whole system or to perform a complete overhaul when the system fails. Two basic replacement policies were proposed by Barlow and Hunter(1960) and Morimura (1970), in which the minimal repair times are identically distributed. But, as Lam(1988) pointed out, in many cases of deteriorating system, in view of ageing and cumulative wear, the repair time will tend to be longer and longer. In this note, the two basic replacement policies are considered for a repairable system with linearly increasing repair times. Optimal policies, which maximize the steady state availability of the system, are obtained for the Weibull failure rate case.

The already informed theories or interval determination methodology for the patrol inspection. repair. and overhaul inspection are difficult for adopting because or the several restriction problems in applying the maintenance schemes as the theory So, the model for determining the optimizing exchange interval or part, maintenance interval of auxiliary machine, unit equipment etc. was presented to apply in the maintenance easily and appropriately.
