Small hydropower is the one of the cleanest one among new and renewable energy with less green house gas emissions. Recently, the necessity of developing small hydropower is emerging since its remaining potential resources in this country are abundant. However, a survey or research on the small hydropower development has been hardly performed since the 1990#s. These circumstances encourages a systematic approach for the small hydropower development. The purpose of this study is to propose a methodology of the location analysis for developing small hydropower. To this end, constraint and location criteria with weights are established and quantification method of each factor is presented. Especially, the analysis procedure is established on the basis of GSIS. Also the study focus on raising the objectivity and precision of analysis by developing system model with automatic search. The proposed methodology is applied to Bochung stream in Keum Riverbasin. The result selects the four and two locations of dam type and run-of-river type respectively. This study will be beneficial to the future activation of small hydropower development as a fundamental work.

Green infrastructure projects have the potential to reduce global warming and deliver sustainable energy solutions. Recently, the construction industry has been expanding their portfolios in New and Renewable (NRE) projects. However, the economic feasibility of NRE projects have not been validated and construction companies are not acquainted with their associated risks. This research performed a two-tiered feasibility study of the domestic projects registered for CDM in the UNFCCC. The first phase involved calculating the average IRR and NPV of the domestic CDM projects, which showed that their profitability to be very low. In the second phase, four NRE projects (Solar, Wind, Hydro, Landfill Gas) were selected and additional income generated from Feed-in-Tariff and CER sales were added to determine the improvements in the projects' IRR and NPV. Results indicate that Solar and Landfill Gas projects benefited the most from the two support mechanisms, while benefits to Wind and Hydro projects were minimal. While the Landfill Gas project had the highest IRR, the Wind project was the most investment attractive due to its NPV and minimal dependency on FiT and CER sales. Construction companies should enter into NRE projects with a long term view as related technologies mature.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have drawn great academic attention due to their potential as low-cost renewable energy sources. DSCs contain a nanostructured TiO2 photoanode, which is a key-component for high conversion efficiency. Particularly, one-dimensional (1-D) nanostructured photoanodes can enhance the electron transport for the efficient collection to the conducting substrate in competition with the recombination processes. This is because photoelectron colletion is determined by trapping/detrapping events along the site of the electron traps (defects, surface states, grain boundaries, and self-trapping). Therefore, 1-D nanostructured photoanodes are advantageous for the fast electron transport due to their desirable features of greatly reduced intercrystalline contacts with specified directionality. In particular, anodic TiO2 nanotube (NT) electrodes recently have been intensively explored owing to their ideal structure for application in DSCs. Besides the enhanced electron transport properties resulted from the 1-D structure, highly ordered and vertically oriented nanostructure of anodic TiO2 NT can contribute additional merits, such as enhanced electrolyte diffusion, better interfacial contact with viscous electrolytes. First, to confirm the advantages of 1-D nanostructured material for the photoelectron collection, we compared the electron transport and charge recombination characteristics between nanoparticle (NP)- and nanorod (NR)-based photoanodes in DSCs by the stepped light-induced transient measurements of photocurrent and voltage (SLIM-PCV). We confirmed that the electron lifetime of the NR-based photoanode was much longer than that of the NP-based photoanode. In addition, highly ordered and vertically oriented TiO2 NT photoanodes were prepared by electrochemical anodization method. We compared the photovoltaic properties of DSCs utilizing TiO2 NT photoanodes prepared by one-step anodization and two-step anodization. And, to reduce the charge recombination rate, energy barrier layer (ZnO, Al2O3)-coated TiO2 NTs also applied in DSC. Furthermore, we applied the TiO2 NT photoanode in DSCs using a viscous electrolyte, i.e., cobalt bipyridyl redox electrolyte, and confirmed that the pore structure of NT array can enhance the performances of this viscous electrolyte.
Solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) is an electrochemical energy conversion system with high efficiency and low-emission of pollution. In order to reduce the operating temperature of SOFC system under $800^{\circ}C$, the thickness reduction of YSZ electrolyte to be as thin as possible, e.g., less than 10 ${\mu}m$ are considered with the microstructure control and optimum design of unit cell. Methods for reducing the thickness of YSZ electrolyte have been investigated in coin cell. Moreover, a large unit cell($8cm{\times}8cm$) for SOFC was fabricated using an anode-supported electrolyte assembly with a thinner electrolyte layer, which was prepared by a tape casting method with a co-sintering technique. we studied the design factors such as active layer, electrolyte thickness, cathode composition, etc,. by the coin type of unit cell ahead of the fabrication process of a large unit cell and also reviewed about the evaluation technique of a large size unit cell such as interconnect design, sealing materials and current collector and so forth. Electrochemical evaluations of the unit cells, including measurements such as power density and impedance, were performed and analyzed. Maximum power density and polarization impedance of coin cell were 0.34W/$cm^2$ and $0.45{\Omega}cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, Maxium power density of a large unit cell($5cm{\times}5cm$) decreased to 0.21W/$cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$ due to the increase of ohmic resistance. However, It was found that the potential value of a large unit cell loaded by 0.22A/$cm^2$ showed 0.76V at 100hrs without the degradation of unit cell.

Cellulose mixed esters (CME), substituted by various fatty acyl chains, are renewable bio-based polyesters. It has lots of potential due to the biodegradable property. In this study, Alpha cellulose was activated for 2h at $40^{\circ}C$ in deionized water prior to synthesis. Homogeneous esterification of CME was accomplished with water-activated alpha cellulose, various saturated fatty acids and acetic anhydride in lithium chloride/N,N-dimethylacetamide (LiCl/DMAc) medium. CME was obtained after 5 hr at $120^{\circ}C$. The filtrated products were characterized using TGA, FT-IR, 1H-NMR and FE-SEM, and the influence of water activation on the total degree of substitution was investigated.

These days much efforts are being dedicated to wind power as a potential source of renewable energy. To maintain effective and uniform generation of energy, defect preservation of turbine blade is essential because it directly takes effects on the efficiency of power generation. For the effective maintenance, early measurements of blade defects are very important. However, current technologies such as ultrasonic waves and thermal imaging inspection methods are not suitable because of long inspection time and non-real time inspection. To supplement the problems, the study introduced a method for real time defect monitoring of a blade surface based on surface wave technology. We examined the effect of various parameters such as micro-cracks and peelings on the propagation of surface wave.

Bio-oil has attracted considerable interest as one of the promising renewable energy resources because it can be used as a feedstock in conventional petroleum refineries for the production of high value chemicals or next-generation hydrocarbon fuels. Currently, catalytic vapor cracking is considered the most potential upgrading method for stabilization of bio-oil, which is a pre-process required prior to feeding bio-oil into refineries. This review introduces the recent research and development trends on bio-oil upgrading via catalytic vapor cracking, focusing on catalysts and upgrading methods used.
Development of efficient methods for clean energy production became a critical issue to improve the quality of human lives. Solar cells is considered as one of the alternative solutions to resolve the issue. Although Si-based solar cells are only popularly utilized for practical applications, high manufacturing cost is considered as a serious drawback for further versatile applications. Thus, different types of are being investigated aiming to replace the Si-based solar cells. Recently, perovskite solar cells (PSC) are considered as a potential replacement for Si-based solar cells due to their low production cost, high power conversion efficiency, light weight and possibility of flexible device fabrication. Thus, we have reviewed the challenges of PSC faced with practical application, particularly on stability.
Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models such as the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model are essential for forecasting one-day-ahead solar irradiance. In order to evaluate the performance of the WRF in forecasting solar irradiance over the Korean Peninsula, we compared WRF prediction data from 2008 to 2010 corresponding to weather observation data (OBS) from the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA). The WRF model showed poor performance at polluted regions such as Seoul and Suwon where the relative Root Mean Square Error (rRMSE) is over 30%. Predictions by the WRF model alone had a large amount of potential error because of the lack of actual aerosol radiative feedbacks. For the purpose of reducing this error induced by atmospheric particles, i.e., aerosols, the WRF model was coupled with the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. The coupled system makes it possible to estimate the radiative feedbacks of aerosols on the solar irradiance. As a result, the solar irradiance estimated by the coupled system showed a strong dependence on both the aerosol spatial distributions and the associated optical properties. In the NF (No Feedback) case, which refers to the WRF-only stimulated system without aerosol feedbacks, the GHI was overestimated by $50-200W\;m^{-2}$ compared with OBS derived values at each site. In the YF (Yes Feedback) case, in contrast, which refers to the WRF-CMAQ two-way coupled system, the rRMSE was significantly improved by 3.1-3.7% at Suwon and Seoul where the Particulate Matter (PM) concentrations, specifically, those related to the $PM_{10}$ size fraction, were over $100{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$. Thus, the coupled system showed promise for acquiring more accurate solar irradiance forecasts.
Methylene diisocyanate (MDI) was investigated as a novel interfacial modifier to enhance the performances of poly(methyl methacrylate)-modified starch/styrene-butadiene rubber (PMMA-modified starch/SBR) composites. Owing to the formation urethane linkage on one side and ${\pi}-{\pi}$ adhesion on the other side, MDI acted as an intermediated linkage role in the PMMA-modified starch/SBR interfaces, which was evidenced by the morphological, mechanical, dynamic mechanical and thermal decomposition studies. As a result, the presence of MDI significantly improved the mechanical properties and thermal stability of PMMA-modified starch/SBR composites. In addition, the effect of starch concentration on the various performances of the resulted MDI/PMMA-modified starch/SBR composites, such as morphology, vulcanization characteristics, mechanical properties, toluene swelling behavior, and thermal stability were investigated and discussed in detail. The obtained MDI/PMMA-modified starch/SBR composites exhibited superior mechanical properties to carbon black/SBR (CB/SBR) composites, demonstrating the potential use of the renewable starch as a substitute for CB in the rubber compounds.
