In this study, we investigated the cultivation possibility using Hydrodictyon reticulatum in a continuous raceway pond as a tertiary sewage treatment plant. The cultivation possibility was evaluated by varying the light quantity, wavelength, and hydraulic retention time (HRT). Experimental results showed that the growth rates of algae and the removal efficiencies of nutrients increased as the light quantity increased, and the maximum photosynthetic rate was maintained at $100{\mu}mol/m^2{\cdot}s$ or higher. When wavelength was varied, nutrient removal efficiency and growth rate increased in the following order: green light, red light, white light, and blue light. The nutrient removal efficiencies and algae productivity in HRT 4 d were better than in HRT 8 d. We conclude that if Hydrodictyon reticulatum is cultivated in a raceway pond and used as a tertiary treatment facility in a sewage treatment plant, nutrients can be effectively removed, and production costs can be reduced.
This study was conducted to estimate the removal efficiency of algae by a mechanical Screw Brush Cone Filter in a lake. The device used a stainless steel cone-shaped filter with a screw brush. The ability of the developed device to remove algae larger than $20{\mu}m$ in Lake ChaSa, Gwangyang city was tested from August to September 2014. The results show that the removal rates for chlorophyll-a, suspended solids and volatile suspended solids were 44-87%(mean 61%), 35-54%(mean 40%), and 37-46%(mean 43%), respectively. This study also discusses equipment and device operation costs and device application problems, and suggests in situ. solutions to these problems.

This study examines algae removal and reduction using ultrasonic. Experiments were carried out on frequency: 28 kHz single-wave, 40 kHz multi-wave; intensity: 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 W/L; algae concentration: 500, 1000, 1700/ml; exposure time: 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20 min. Also, We investigated algae removal and reduction in single cistern where raw water including algae was directly exposed to ultrasonic and in the double cisterns located in 4 cm from ultrasonic vibrator. The algae type used in this study was Melosira genus of Bacillariophceae. The Bacillariophceae is the representative algae which causes blockage of filter basin. Because of its resistance against oxidizers, it flows into the filter basin after sterilization. As a result of this study, the form of Bacillariophceae was completely destroyed and dissolved after the application of ultrasonic waves unlike the sterilization using oxidizers. Removal efficiency of algae using ultrasonic waves increased in proportion to intensity and exposure time of ultrasonic waves, and in double cisterns is better than single cistern.
The blue-green algae which caused odor problem in the tap water are difficult to precipitate in sedimentation basin and clogged the filter void rapidly. The studies of this paper were not only oxidation, coagulation and sedimentation processes for effectively removing blue-green algae but yellow clay and polyamine for verification as coagulants aids. The results of this research are summarized as follows: Higher ozone dose(C) and longer contact time(T) were needed for a high degree of removing blue-green algae efficiency. the removal rate of blue-green algae was proportional to the $C\times T$ value. The removal percent of chlorophyll-a by sedimentation and filter without pre-ozonation was about 75% but 1 mg/L pre-ozonation could increase the removal percent of chlorophyll-a to 99% and more pre-ozonation could remove completely. Though the removal efficiency of turbidity could increased by high dose of chlorination, the dissolved organic carbon was increased. More chlorine dose from 4 to 10 mg/L dissolved organic carbon was decreased. Using yellow clay as coagulant aids increased density of floc so the settling velocity of floc become rising but polyamine could not increase settling velocity of floc though it could formated large floc.
After identifying species by collecting the suspended and attached algae mat inhabiting in the slow sand-filter, Spirogyra sp., Mougeotia sp. and Closterium sp. were main green algae and Synedra sp. was diatom algae. Among them green algae Spirogyra sp. was dominant species. A result of observing the life mode of apple snail for a month after introducing into the slow sand-filter, apple snail eggs were discovered on the filter walls 2 weeks after introducing, 4 weeks later lots of eggs were observed all of the slow sand-filter walls, it means there is no problem for apple snail to live in the slow sand-filter. The observation result for algae removal potential by introduced apple snail after 2 months later, slow sand-filter where apple snail were introduced, a few algal mat were observed. On the other hand, no introduced apple snail into the slow sand-filter, lots of suspended algal mats were formed in the water and attached algal mats on the sand surface as well, these algal mat induced much of operating problems.
Biosorption characteristics were investigated to discuss the use of agar entrapped Spirulina to remove of heavy metal ions from polluted waters. Agar immobilized algae were used as bioadsorbent in continuous reactor for heavy metal ions removal. The process solution contains Pb, Cu, and Cd as single ion and binary ions. In the adsorption of single heavy metal ions by agar immobilized Spirulina, the adsorption reached within 1hr and observed diffusion limitation differed from the free algal cell adsorption. The optimum pH for the adsorption of heavy metals was 4.5 but the influence of pH decreased less than that of free algal cell. Also, the adsorption characteristics of single heavy metal ions with agar immobilized Spirulina fitted the BET isotherm. Both of experiments of free algal cell and agar immobilized algae showed higher removal efficiency in the single ion solutions than binary ions solutions. The experimental results in the packed column with agar immobilized algae were over 90% of removal efficiency for the Pb, Cu, and Cd in single ion solutions.

Commercial 28 algae removal technologies that have been applied in domestic rivers and lakes with green tide were investigated, analyzed and classified. The classification of algae removal technologies was based on the three criteria (i.e., principle, flow rate of water body, and application period). Also, algae removal technologies were evaluated in terms of cost effectiveness, field applicability, effect durability, and eco friendliness. From the analysis results, technologies using physical, chemical, biological, and convergent controls were 32.2%, 25%, 21.4%, and 21.4%, respectively. The 75% of technologies have been applied to stagnant water body (${\leq}0.2m/s$). Also, algae harvesting ship with dissolved air flotation, conveyor belt and filtration processes and natural floating coagulant were found to have better field applicability, compared to other technologies. However, proper algae removal technology in specific rivers and lakes should be chosen after the evaluation of long-term pilot scale field test. Also, development of energy and resource recovery technologies from algae biomass is warranted.

Cyclonic-dissolved air flotation(Cyclonic-DAF), an advanced form of pressure flotation, applies a structure that enables the forming of twirling flows. This in turn allows for suspended matter to adhere to microbubbles and float to the surface of a treatment tank during the process of intake water flowing through a float separation tank. This study conducted a lab-scale test and pursued geometrical modeling using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) to establish a pilot scale design. Based on the design parameters found through the above process, a pilot cyclonic-DAF system($10m^3/hr$) for removing algae was created. Upon developing the pilot-scale cyclonic-DAF system, a type of algae coagulant(R-119) was applied as the coagulant to the system for field testing through which the removal rates of chlorophyll-a and cyanobacteria were evaluated. The chlorophyll-a and harmful cyanobacteria of the raw water at region B, the field-test site, were found to be $177.9mg/m^3$ and 652,500cells/mL respectively. Treated waters applied with 60mg/L and 100mg/L of algae coagulant presented removal efficiencies of approximately 95% and 97%, respectively. The cyanobacteria cell number of the treated waters applied with 60mg/L and 100mg/L of algae coagulant both that were equal to or less than 1,000cells/mL and were below attention level criteria for the issuance of algae boundary.

The study was performed to apply the algae removal system to coagulation-filtration process for minimize the damage to screen interruption of water treatment plants and died of fish by algae bloom on freshwater. Sample used Nokdong river water and Alkalinity, turbidity, chlorophyll-a and pH measured using Jar test and drum filter for coagulation-filtration process to determine optimum coagulation condition. A jar test apparatus and laboratory reactor were used in this study. The highest removal efficiency was observed when condition of flocculation time, coagulant dosage, drum filter rpm and chlorophyll-a concentration were to be 5min, 5mg/ℓ, 3rpm and 90㎍/ℓ, respectively. The average removal efficiencies measured of chlorophyll-a and turbidity using Alum were 50~60% and 30~50%, respectively. PAC was more effective than Alum in removal chlorophyll-a about 20%.
On this study, removal method for microcystin, toxic substance released from the blue-green algae, using chloride was investigated. 82 ~ 98% of Microsystin were removed within 1 hr when sample had microsystin only. However, if the sample had algae cell removal efficiency was decreased to 50%, except the concentration of chloride $10Cl-mg/{\ell}$. As a result, intermediate-chlorination which dose chloride after coagulation process is considered the optimum method for the removal of microcystin because most of algae cell could remove during the coagulation process.
