In previous studies, solely ferric (Fe3+) and calcium (Ca2+) ions were commonly used for removal of PO4-P (considered as T-P in this study) in wastewater via chemical precipitation. Herein, the removal of total phosphorus (T-P) in wastewater was performed using various mineral and lime dissolved solutions. The dissolution kinetics of different minerals (feldspar, olivine, elvan, illite, sericite, and zeolite) and lime was compared and used their solutions for T-P removal of real wastewater. The highest T-P removal (almost 90%) was obtained by the lime dissolved solution and followed by zeolite, illite, feldspar, and others. We observed a significant co-relationship (R of 0.96) between the amount of initial Ca2+ and T-P removal. This was induced by formation of hydroxyapatite-like mineral via Ca-P precipitation reaction at high pH solution. Furthermore, additional removal of suspended solid (SS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was achieved by only lime dissolved solution. Finally, the lime-feldspar dissolved solutions were prepared at different ratios (10-50%), which showed a successive T-P removal up to two times by samples of 40 and 50%.

Micellar enhanced ultrafiltration(MEUF) is a surfactant-based separtaion technique which can remove dissolved organics or multivalent ions from water. In this study, trichloroethylene(TCE) and chromate were simultaneouly removed using MEUF and cetyltrimethylammoniun chloride (CPC) was used as a surfactant. The removal efficiency of chromate was 99% and that of TCE was more than 80%. The presence of TCE or chromate did not affect removal efficiency of each pollutants because the predominat mechanism of TCE and chromate are different.
Astragalus uliginosus L.-stems as a by-product of oriental medicine are produced largely in a northern area of Chungbuk province. These by-products do not have any demand and thus usually discarded into the fields as a waste. In this work, a biochar was prepared from the Astragalus uliginosus L.-stem waste for recycling. The biochar was used to investigate the removal characteristics of cadmium and manganese ions dissolved in water. When adsorption equilibrium experiments were performed to treat 50 and 100 mg/L of cadmium ions, the removal efficiencies of cadmium were 100 and 95%, respectively. In addition, the maximum of adsorption amount for manganese ions in 5 h at an initial concentration of 50 and 100 mg/L was found to be as 36.1 and 37.9 mg/g, respectively. Based on the experimental results, it was found that the adsorption amount of Astragalus uliginosus L.-stem biochar for the removal of both cadmium and manganese ions was four times higher than that of the activated carbon. The surface analysis of both biochar and activated carbon samples using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that the oxygen content and O/C ratio of biochar was 2.1 and 2.4 times higher than that of the activated carbon, respectively. In order to enhance the removal capability of manganese, 50 and 100 mg/L of manganese ions were operated at different temperatures. It was observed that these equilibrium was attained in 4 h under 45 ℃ and removal efficiencies were 92 and 53%, respectively. Consequently, the experimental results can be utilized as a new removal technology for eco-friendly and economically treating cadmium and manganese ions dissolved in water.
This is the study for the removal of a toxic heavy metal ions and the recycling of expanded polystyrene wastes. Thus expanded polystyrene wastes collected from the packing materials of TV or chemicals and dissolved by $80wt.\%$ solvent(N, N-Dimethylacrylamide), electrospun in DC 20kV by power supply. Generally, the electrospinning is a process of manufacture to the fibers of nanosize from polymer solution. Manufactured nanofiber mats by electrospinning were sulfonated by cone.-sulphuric acid with $Ag_2S_O_4$ catalysts for the exchange capacity of heavy metal ions and the properties of structure with sulfonated time investigated by FESEM(Feild Emission Scaning Electron Microscope). The ion exchange capacity of light metal$(Na^+)$, Cd(II) and Ni(II), and by a nanofiber mats were 1.94[mmo1/g-dry-mat), 1.72(mmol/g-dry-mat), 1.24(mmol/g-dry-mat), respectively., and water uptake content showed a similar trend with IEC. and The selectivity coefficients $K^M_H$ of Cd(II), Ni((II) ions showed 0.324, 0.228. respectively.
The impact of dissolved wastewater constituents on the treatment of synthetic bisphenol A (BPA) solutions was investigated under a variety of reaction conditions. The laccase enzyme from Trametes vesicolor was used for the BPA treatment. The constituents studied included various inorganic salts, organic compounds and heavy metal ions. BPA degradation was inhibited by sulfate, thiosulfate, sulfide, nitrite, and cyanide ions at 25 mg/$\ell$, 100mg/$\ell$, 25 mg/$\ell$ 150 mg/$\ell$, and 2.5 mg/$\ell$, respectively. However, the inhibitive effects of sulfide and sulfite on BPA degradation were diminished by additional aeration to oxidize them. Formaldehyde significantly reduced the rate of BPA degradation at 1.0% among organic compounds studied. Among heavy metal ions tested, Fe(II) substantially suppressed BPA removal at 1 mM. MgCl$_2$ and CaCl$_2$ exhibited great inhibition of BPA degradation at 25mM.
In the present work, biochar was prepared using Achyanthes japonica stem as a by-product of herbal medicine. In order to apply the prepared biochar to water treatment process, the adsorption characteristics of zinc and iron ions dissolved in water were investigated. When the experiments were performed for 2 h to remove 70 and 100 mg/L of zinc ions, the adsorption amounts of 32.3 and 31.0 mg/g were obtained, respectively. It was also found that the adsorption amount of Achyanthes japonica stem biochar for the removal process of zinc ion was three times higher than that of the activated carbon. In addition, when the experiments were performed for 2 h to treat 70 and 100 mg/L of iron ions, high adsorption amounts of 50.1 and 54.3 mg/g were achieved, respectively. In order to further enhance the removal efficiency of zinc and iron ions, a steam activation process was performed on the biochar of Achyanthes japonica stem. As a result, the removal efficiencies of 70 and 100 mg/L of zinc ions increased to 80 and 60%, respectively. Also, the removal efficiencies of 70 and 100 mg/L of iron ions were improved to 100 and 82%, respectively. In addition, when the biochar of Achyanthes japonica stem with a steam activation was compared with the untreated biochar of Achyanthes japonica stem, the specific surface area increased 37.3 times, and the total and macroporpous pore volumes were improved by 28.4 and 136 times, respectively. Therefore, the results can be used for economically and practically adsorbing zinc and iron ions contained in water.

In this research, in order to effectively utilize the petroleum residue pitch, it was used as an adsorbent for removal of cesium ion. In this experiment, acid modification (hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid) treatment was performed on the adsorbent to improve the ability to remove low-concentration cesium ions dissolved in water. As a result, when the reaction was performed with 9 M sulfuric acid at 25 ℃ and for 240 min, the removal efficiencies of 1.0 and 2.5 mg/L cesium ions were 66 and 51%, respectively. In addition, as the adsorption time increased in the batch experiment, the removal capacity of 1.0 and 2.5 mg/L cesium ions was improved, and when the adsorption reached for 32 hr, the removal efficiencies were 72 and 68%, respectively. Also, in order to increase the ability to remove the remaining cesium ions, an experiment was performed by temperature change (25, 37, 49 ℃), and 1.0 and 2.5 mg/L cesium ions contained in water under the operating conditions of 49 ℃ and 32 hr showed removal efficiencies of 90 and 81%, respectively. Consequently, these experimental results were intended to be used as an adsorption technology that can economically treat low-concentration cesium ions contained in water.
The characteristics of floc formation of the iron(Fe) ions contained in the acid mine drainage was studied for developing the process treating the acid mine drainage. The iron(Fe) ions were formed into flocs by the acid-base reaction with the added $Ca(OH)_2$. The molal ratio of iron(Fe) vs $Ca(OH)_2$ was one of major control variables in treatment; pH change, iron(Fe) ions concentration in treated drainage, DO (dissolved oxygen content). In addition, the air gave much effect on the color of the $iron(Fe)-Ca(OH)_2$ flocs and the attachment to magnet. The attaching to the magnet of the flocs formed in the air was much less than the case without air.
A general and universal detection method, which can be used in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and flow injection analysis (FIA) system for the determination of any metal ions complexing with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), is demonstrated. Pulsed amperometric detection scheme is applied in a flow-through thin layer electrochemical cell at an Au working electrode. Fluctuation of peak current level at the same flow rate of carrier solution is minimized at this solid working electrode, whereas not at a dropping mercury electrode. Removal of dissolved oxygen can be omitted with this detection method, which is a required step for cathodic detection methods. Also, a group of metal ions can be determined selectively and indirectly with this detection scheme.
This study deals with the removal of mercury species using a packed-bed column with spherical aminated chitosan material. These adsorbents revealed a high adsorption capacity for mercury species. Experiments with feed solutions of 10 ppm Hg dissolved in distilled water showed an excellent removal with a sharp increase of the filter effluent concentration after a total throughput of 900 bed volumes of feed water. Up to $95\%$ desorption was reached by using 3 bed volumes of 0.01 N EDTA solution. EDTA could be recovered by means of sulfuric acid with about $75\%$ efficiency. Almost the same results were obtained in repeated sorption and desorption experiments at identical conditions. The experiments demonstrated that the sorbents possessed practically no sorption capacity for alkaline earth ions ($Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$). Their influence on the sorption of mercury was negligible. In experiments with spiked tap water of the Karlsruhe Research Centre and a feed mercury concentration of 0.01 mg/l, the breakthrough of Hg was observed only after a total throughput of about 6,000 bed volumes of feed water.
