Mt. Baekdu is a stratovolcano located at the border between China and North Korea and is known to have formed through its differentiation stage after the Oligocene epoch in the Cenozoic era. There has been a growing interest in the magma re-activity of Mt. Baekdu volcano since 2010. Several research projects have been conducted by government such as Korea Meteorological Administration and Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources. Because, however, the Mt. Baekdu volcano is located far from South Korea, it is quite difficult to collect in-situ observations by terrestrial equipment. Remote sensing is a science to analyze and interpret information without direct physical contact with a target object. Various types of platform such as automobile, unmanned aerial vehicle, aircraft and satellite can be used for carrying a payload. In the past several decades, numerous volcanic studies have been conducted by remotely sensed observations using wide spectrum of wavelength channels in electromagnetic waves. In particular, radar remote sensing has been widely used for volcano monitoring in that microwave channel can gather surface's information without less limitation like day and night or weather condition. Radar interferometric technique which utilized phase information of radar signal enables to estimate surface displacement such as volcano, earthquake, ground subsidence or glacial movement, etc. In 2018, long-term research project for collaborative observation for Mt. Baekdu volcano between Korea and China were selected by Korea government. A volcanic specialized research center has been established by the selected project. The purpose of this paper is to introduce about remote sensing techniques for volcano monitoring and to review selected studies with remote sensing techniques to monitor Mt. Baekdu volcano. The acquisition status of the archived observations of six synthetic aperture radar satellites which are in orbit now was investigated for application of radar interferometry to monitor Mt. Baekdu volcano. We will conduct a time-series analysis using collected synthetic aperture radar images.
This paper presents a deep learning-based road segmentation framework from very high-resolution orthophotos. The proposed method uses Deep Convolutional Autoencoders for end-to-end mapping of orthophotos to road segmentations. In addition, a set of post-processing steps were applied to make the model outputs GIS-ready data that could be useful for various applications. The optimization of the model's parameters is explained which was conducted via grid search method. The model was trained and implemented in Keras, a high-level deep learning framework run on top of Tensorflow. The results show that the proposed model with the best-obtained hyperparameters could segment road objects from orthophotos at an average accuracy of 88.5%. The results of optimization revealed that the best optimization algorithm and activation function for the studied task are Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) and Exponential Linear Unit (ELU), respectively. In addition, the best numbers of convolutional filters were found to be 8 for the first and second layers and 128 for the third and fourth layers of the proposed network architecture. Moreover, the analysis on the time complexity of the model showed that the model could be trained in 4 hours and 50 minutes on 1024 high-resolution images of size $106{\times}106pixels$, and segment road objects from similar size and resolution images in around 14 minutes. The results show that the deep learning models such as Convolutional Autoencoders could be a best alternative to traditional machine learning models for road segmentation from aerial photographs.
The primary purpose of this study is, using Landsat remote sensing data and a image processing software, ERDAS, to generate real data and image photographs on physical land use of the Seoul metropolitan region. The remote sensing data used in this study are Landsat MSS data (August 28, 1979) and TM data (May 31, 1991) which cover the Seoul metropolitan region of Korea. The spatial resolutions of MSS data and TM data are 57m X 79m and 30m X 30m respectively. In addition, this study aims at contrasting urbanization phases of the Seoul metropolitan region in 1979 with those in 1991, by making image photographs and statistics on physical land use. Summing up the major results, built-up area ratio within the Seoul city had been expanded from 41.9% in 1979 to 64.5% in 1991 and that within the radius of 40km of Seoul city hall had been expanded from 10.5% In 1979 to 19.8% in 1991. The data and technique developed in this study could serve as a useful tool in making various kinds of spatial plannings, that is, urban and regional planning, selection of optimal new town location, evaluation of public facilities location alternatives, etc..
The aim of this study is to evaluate the susceptibility of landslides at Kangneung area, Korea, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing. Landslide locations were identified from interpretation of satellite image and field surveys. The topographic, soil, forest, geologic, lineament and land cover data were collected, processed and constructed into a spatial database using GIS and remote sensing data. Using frequency ratio model which is one of the probability model, the relationships between landslides and related factors such as slope, aspect, curvature and type of topography, texture, material, drainage and effective thickness of soil, type, age, diameter and density of wood, lithology, distance from lineament and land cover were calculated as frequency ratios. Then, the frequency ratio were summed to calculate a landslide susceptibility indexes and the landslide susceptibility maps were generated using the indexes. The results of the analysis were verified and cross-validated using actual landslide location data. The verification results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility map and the existing data on landslide locations.
Seasonal changes in river water vary seasonally as well as locationally, and the assessment is essential. In this study, we used the recent technique of post-classification by using the Google earth engine (GEE) to map the seasonal changes in Mahanadi river of Odisha. However, some fixed problems results during the rainy season that affects the livelihood system of Cuttack such as flooding, drowning of children and waste material deposit. Therefore, this study conducted 1) to map and analyse the water density changes and 2) to analyse the seasonal variation of river water to resolve and prevent problem shortcomings. Our results showed that nine types of variation can be found in the Mahanadi River each year. The increase and decrease of intensity of surface water analysed, and it varies in between -130 to 70 ㎥/nf. The highest frequency change is 2900 Hz near Cuttack city. The pi diagram provides the percentage of seasonal variation that can be observed as permanent water (30%), new seasonal (28%), ephemeral (12%), permanent to seasonal (7%) and seasonal (10%). The analysis is helpful and effective to assess the seasonal variation that can provide a platform for the development of Cuttack city that lies in Mahanadi delta.

Precipitation evapotranspiration and runoff are three key parameters of regional water balance. Problems exist in the traditional methods for calculating such factors , such as explaining of the geographic rationality of spatial interpolating methods and lacking of enough observation stations in many important area for bad natural conditions. With the development of modern spatial info-techniques, new efficient shifts arose for traditional studies. Guided by theories on energy flow and materials exchange within Soil-Atmosphere-Plant Continuant (SPAC), retrieval models of key hydrological parameters were established in the Yellow River basin using CMS-5 and FengYun-2 meteorological satellite data. Precipitation and evapotranspiration were then estimated: (1) Estimating tile amount of solar energy that is absorbed by the ground with surface reflectivity, which is measured in the visible wavelength band (VIS): (2) Assessing the partitioning of the absorbed energy between sensible and latent heat with the surface temperature, which was measured in the thermal infrared band (TIR), the latent heat representing the evapotranspiration of water; (3) Clouds are identified and cloud top levels are classified using both VIS and TIR data. Hereafter precipitation will be calculated pixel by pixel with retrieval model. Daily results are first obtained, which are then processed to decade, monthly and yearly products. Precipitation model has been has been and tested with ground truth data; meanwhile, the evapotranspiration result has been verified with Large Aperture Scintillometry (LAS) presented by Wageningen University of the Netherlands. Further studies may concentrate on the application of models, i.e., establish a hydrological model of the Yellow river basin to make the accurate estimation of river volume and even monitor the whole hydrological progress.
The geographical phenomena in space are well observed in the specific scale. This scale is called the operational scale. For an analysis of the optimum scale, it is needed to measure and represent the characteristics of attribute information extracted from the satellite imagery. The development of remote sensing technique makes various images with different resolution available. Researchers can select the image with optimum resolution for their analysis among various resolutions. For an effective analysis of the scale characteristics of satellite image, we investigated the characteristics of attribute information extracted from satellite image with different resolution. The two stage-procedure for exploring the optimum resolution proposed in this study was tested by applying to the satellite imagery covering Sunchon bay. This procedure can be an effective tool utilizing the scale characteristics of attribute information extracted from satellite imagery.
The relative geostrophic velocity is estimated by using the MCSST(Multi-Channel Sea Surface Temperature) from a NOAA/AVHRR image and applied to the Korea Strait. Remote sensing technique can play a useful role to research for oceanic phenomena because of its synoptic, simultaneous and repetitive viewing. The high resolution data of AVHRR can determine the geostrophic flow more precisely than the hydrographic data on shipboard. As a result of research, the relative geostrophic velocity in the weatern channel of the Korea Strait is the strongest in the trough area and its maximum speed is about 23.8cm/sec in April, 1992. But this results include the error due to neglecting the effect of salinity in estimation the geopotential anomaly. The geostrophic volume transport through the western channel of the Korea Strait is the largest between trough area and the Tsushima Island.

In this study, we propose a method for detecting coastal surface wastes using an UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) remote sensing method and an object detection algorithm based on deep learning. An object detection algorithm based on deep neural networks was proposed to detect coastal debris in aerial images. A deep neural network model was trained with image datasets of three classes: PET, Styrofoam, and plastics. And the detection accuracy of each class was compared with Darknet-53. Through this, it was possible to monitor the wastes landing on the shore by type through unmanned aerial vehicles. In the future, if the method proposed in this study is applied, a complete enumeration of the whole beach will be possible. It is believed that it can contribute to increase the efficiency of the marine environment monitoring field.

Red tide, defined as the major reproduction of harmful birds, has the characteristics of being generated and diffused in a wide area. This has limitations in detection only with the existing investigation method. Therefore, in this study, red tide was detected using a remote sensing technique. In addition, it was intended to increase the accuracy of detection by using optical characteristics, not just the concentration of chlorophyll. Red tide mainly occurs on the southern coast where sea signals are complex, and the main red tide control species on the southern coast is Cochlodinium polykirkoides. Therefore, it was intended to secure objectivity by reflecting features that could not be found depending on the researcher's observation and experience, not limited to visual judgment using machine learning techniques. In this study, support background machines and random forest were used among machine learning models, and as a result of calculating accuracy as performance evaluation indicators of the two models, the accuracy was 85.7% and 80.2%, respectively.
