Complexity Estimation Based Work Load Balancing for a Parallel Lidar Waveform Decomposition Algorithm

  • LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) is an active remote sensing technology which provides 3D coordinates of the Earth's surface by performing range measurements from the sensor. Early small footprint LIDAR systems recorded multiple discrete returns from the back-scattered energy. Recent advances in LIDAR hardware now make it possible to record full digital waveforms of the returned energy. LIDAR waveform decomposition involves separating the return waveform into a mixture of components which are then used to characterize the original data. The most common statistical mixture model used for this process is the Gaussian mixture. Waveform decomposition plays an important role in LIDAR waveform processing, since the resulting components are expected to represent reflection surfaces within waveform footprints. Hence the decomposition results ultimately affect the interpretation of LIDAR waveform data. Computational requirements in the waveform decomposition process result from two factors; (1) estimation of the number of components in a mixture and the resulting parameter estimates, which are inter-related and cannot be solved separately, and (2) parameter optimization does not have a closed form solution, and thus needs to be solved iteratively. The current state-of-the-art airborne LIDAR system acquires more than 50,000 waveforms per second, so decomposing the enormous number of waveforms is challenging using traditional single processor architecture. To tackle this issue, four parallel LIDAR waveform decomposition algorithms with different work load balancing schemes - (1) no weighting, (2) a decomposition results-based linear weighting, (3) a decomposition results-based squared weighting, and (4) a decomposition time-based linear weighting - were developed and tested with varying number of processors (8-256). The results were compared in terms of efficiency. Overall, the decomposition time-based linear weighting work load balancing approach yielded the best performance among four approaches.

College Students' Workload and Productivity for Different Types of Tasks before and during COVID-19 Pandemic in the U.S.

  • COVID-19 pandemic forces college education to be rapidly switched from face-to-face education into remote education. Two inconsistent findings exist in previous study about remote learning. First, studies before COVID-19 pandemic found remote learning is an effective method, which provided students with higher achievement and improved their work-life balance. However, studies showed remote learning during COVID-19 pandemic is not as effective as expected because of technical issues, lack of motivations and even mental health issues. Second, findings from studies about remote learning impacts on workload and productivity during COVID-19 are also inconsistent. Therefore, this study aims to quantitatively measure college students' workload and productivity during COVID-19 of different types of tasks to provide a comprehensive and latest evaluation on remote learning. The findings of this study show remote learning slightly increases college students' total listening and speaking tasks workload, total reading and writing tasks workload. Furthermore, phone call, in-person meeting, online meeting and email workload increase significantly in remote learning. However, productivity for both listening and speaking, reading and writing tasks decreases after remote learning but no significant changes of productivity are found.

분석기기지원을 위한 원격 데이터 분석 시스템 개발 (Development of Remote Data Analysis System for the Joint Use of Equipments)

  • In Korea Basic Science Institute(KBSI) the remote data analysis system is developed for the joint use of advanced equipments. This system enables the researchers to access the datas which are produced at KBSI and analyse them by Java program on the Web,. Except Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator no additional softwares are required for analysing data. We have developed remote data analysis systems for five major equipments which KBSI supports for the researchers, The systems which are developed are those for NMR spectrometer High Reso-lution Tandem mass Spectrometer Microscopic Imaging System DNA Sequencer and Natural Ra-dioactivity Measruement System, These programs work on any computer platform and any operat-ing system only if the internet is available. This remote data analysis system will be served as a part of Collaboratory the remote collaborative system.

  • In stead of RF module which has been used conventionally in many remote measurement applications, a new type of remote measurement system based on PCS(Personal communication system) and one chip Microcontroller is proposed in this work. PCS has many advantages with respect to cost reliability, communication quality, and so on. The proposed system consists of three different modules: PCS module, micro-controller module, and sensor module. System configuration as well as illustrative experiments will be described in detail.

  • The purpose of this work is to introduce the Remote Control System for KSR-III Liquid Rocket Propulsion System. We developed the high reliable Fire control System that needed for long distance control. We carried out a real time remote control and measuring for KSR-III lust Liquid Propulsion Rocket in Korea using TCP/IP Ethernet network method and Fiber-optic communication method. Also HMI operation program developed guarantee confidential control, monitoring and analysis for Fire control operation.

Urbanization and Quality of Stormwater Runoff: Remote Sensing Measurements of Land Cover in an Arid City

  • The intensity of stormwater runoff is particularly acute across cities located in arid climates. During flash floods loose sediment and pollutants are typically transported across sun-hardened surfaces contributing to widespread degradation of water quality. Rapid, dense urbanization exacerbates the problem by creating continuous areas of impervious surfaces, perforated only by a few green patches. Our work demonstrates how the latest techniques in remote sensing can be used to routinely measure urban land cover types, impervious cover, and vegetated areas. In addition, multiple regression models can then infer relationships between urban land use and land cover types with stormwater quality data, initially sampled at discrete monitoring sites, and then extrapolated annually across an arid city; in our case, the city of Phoenix in Arizona, USA. Results reveal that from 30 storm event samples, solids and heavy metal pollutants were found to be highly related with general impervious surfaces; in particular, with industrial and commercial land use types. Repercussions stemming from this work include support for public policies that advocate environmental sustainability and the more recent focus on urban livability. Also, advocacy for new urban construction and re-development that both steer away from vast unbroken impervious surfaces, in place of more fragmented landscapes that harmonize built and green spaces.

  • Remote sensing division of satellite technology research center (SaTReC) , Korea advanced institute of science and technology (KAIST) has developed a ground receiving and processing system for high resolution satellite images. The developed system will be adapted and operated to receive, process and distributes images acquired from of the second Korean Multi-purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT-2), which will be launched in 2004. This project had initiated to develop and Koreanize the state-of-the-art technologies for the ground receiving system for high resolution remote sensing images, which range from direct ingestion of image data to the distribution of products through precise image correction. During four years development from Dec. 1998 until Aug. 2002, the system had been verified in various ways including real operation of custom-made systems such as a prototype system for SPOT and a commercialized system for KOMPSAT-1. Currently the system is under customization for installation at KOMPSAT-2 ground station. In this paper, we present accomplished work and future work.

고소작업차의 원격 제어를 포함한 중앙집중식 컨트롤러 및 유압식 상승리프트 개발 (Development of Centralized controller with remote control and hydraulic lift)

  • 본 연구는 선행 연구로 진행되었던 과수원 및 농경지에서 사용되는 고소작업차의 안정적인 요소를 설계하기 위하여 진행되었다. Auto leveling system과 수평센서를 이용하여 불규칙하고 경사가진 곳에서 안전하게 작업하기 위하여 유압식 상승리프트를 개발하였으며 고소작업대에서의 제어를 하기 위하여 원격 제어를 포함한 중앙집중식 컨트롤러의 개발을 진행하였다. 개발된 모듈을 통하여 고소작업대에서의 안정적 제어가 되는지 현장 시 운행을 실시하였으며, 고소 작업대의 구조해석을 통하여 작업자가 작업대에서 안전하게 작업을 할 수 있는 최대 적재 하중 및 균등 적재량을 제시함으로서 보다 안전에 대해 유의하도록 하였다. 각 부위별 설계 및 검증, 제작을 통하여 완성된 고소기계차의 현장 시운행을 통하여 프로토타입의 고소기계차를 제작하였고, 몇 가지의 수정 보완 사항을 통하여 연구를 지속적으로 행할 예정이다.

무인차량용 다중채널 무선원격 제어시스템의 설계 (Design of Multiple Channel Wireless Remote Control System for Unmanned Vehicle)

  • 본 논문에서는 무인차량용 다중채널 무선원격 제어시스템의 설계방안을 제안한다. 기존의 무선원격 제어시스템은 단일 제어채널로 구성되어 제어채널에 고장이 발생하였을 때 응급대처가 불가능한 문제점이 있다. 따라서 휴대용 무선원격 제어기와 스테이션용 무선원격 제어로 구성되는 다중채널 무선원격시스템을 제안한다. 무인차량용 다중채널 무선원격 제어시스템을 개발하기 위하여 휴대용 무선원격 제어기와 휴대용 무선원격 제어기를 설계 및 개발하였다. 개발한 무선원격 제어시스템의 성능을 확인하기 위하여 무인차량에 적용하여 주행 실험을 실시하였다. 무선원격제어기의 고장 시 휴대용 무선원격제어기를 이용한 비상정지 실험과 휴대용 무선원격제어기의 고장 시 스테이션용 원격제어시스템을 이용한 비상정지 실험을 실시한 결과 모두 만족하는 비상정지 성능을 발휘함을 검증하였다.

  • The increasing concern over radiation exposure in the nuclear industry has fostered agrressive efforts to reduce the levels of radiation exposure. One area of the effot to reduce the radiation exposure is the development of a remote radiation monitoring system. Remote radiation monitoring can serve many benificaial functions reduce exposure to radiation by plant personnel, impruve the quality of the data that is collected and recognize the radiation environment easily. Radiation mapping system gives a good information that represents radiation level distribution. The system we have developed consists of a data acquistion parts, mobile robot and remote control parts. Data acquisition parts consist of radiation detection module and vision acquistion module which collect radiation data, visiion data and distance information. In remote control parts, the acquision data are processed and displayed. We have constructed radiation mapping image by overlaying the vision and radiation data. The radiation mapping techniques for displaying the results of the survey in an easily comprehendable form will facilitate a better understanding of the radiation environment in the facility. This system can reduce workers radiation exposure and aid to help work plan, so it has significant benifits in cost and safety.
