A reliability approach to evaluate structural performance has gained increased acceptability and usage over the past two decades. Most reliability analyses are based on the reliability of an individual component without examining the entire structural system. These analyses often result in either unnecessary repairs or unsafe structures. This study uses examples of series, parallel, and series-parallel models of structural systems to illustrate how the component reliabilities affect the reliability of the entire system. The component-system reliability interaction can be used to develop optimum lifetime inspection and repair strategies for structural systems. These examples demonstrate that such strategies must be based on the reliability of the entire structural system. They also demonstrate that the location of an individual component in the system has a profound effect on the acceptable reliability of that component. Furthermore, when a structure is deteriorating over time, the reliability importance of various components is a1so changing with time. For this reason, the most critical component in the early life of the structure may not tie the most critical later.

In this paper, we discuss the plethora of uses for the software package R, and focus specifically on its helpful applications in reliability data analyses. Examples are presented; including the R coding protocol, R code, and plots for various statistical as well as reliability analyses. We explore Kaplan-Meier estimates and maximum likelihood estimation for distributions including the Weibull. Finally, we discuss future applications of R, and usages of quantile regression in reliability.
For the vibration reliability tests, the jigs for mounting the test specimen on a vibration reliability tester are required. The dynamic stabilities of the jigs should be verified before the tests for obtaining the accurate reliability of the test specimen. This paper proposes an analytical technology for ensuring the dynamic structural stability for the test setup including the jig. The technology includes the mode analyses for checking resonance, the harmonic analyses for evaluating the dynamic structural stability of test setup including the jig, and the fatigue analyses for obtaining the durable reliability time with calculating the life cycles at the area of weakness. The cause investigation of the damaged jig during vibration reliability test of a rubber hose and the design of new revised jig are performed by using the technology. The vibration reliability test for the rubber hose with the new revised jig by analysis results is successfully conducted without any problem. Therefore the jig's design technology proposed in this paper may be useful for other items as well.
Modelling for failures is important for reliability analysis since failures of products such as automobiles occur as both time and usage progress and the results from the proper analysis of the two-dimensional data can be used for establishing warranty assurance policy. Hence, in this paper general issues which concern modelling failures are discussed, and both one-dimensional approaches and two-dimensional approaches to two-dimensional data are investigated. Finally non-parametric approaches to two-dimensional data are presented as a means of exploratory data analyses.

The lack of experimental studies on the mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) haunched beams leads to difficulties in statistical and reliability analyses. This study performs stochastic and reliability analyses of the ultimate shear capacity of RC haunched beams based on nonlinear finite element analysis. The main aim of this study is to investigate the influence of uncertainty in material properties and geometry parameters on the mechanical performance and shear capacity of RC haunched beams. Firstly, 65 experimentally tested RC haunched beams and prismatic beams are analyzed via deterministic nonlinear finite element method by a special program (ATENA) to verify the efficiency of utilized numerical models, the shear capacity and the crack pattern. The accuracy of nonlinear finite element analyses is verified by comparing the results of nonlinear finite element and experiments and both results are found to be in a good agreement. Afterwards, stochastic analyses are performed for each beam where the RC material properties and geometry parameters are assigned to take probabilistic values using an advanced simulating procedure. As a result of stochastic analysis, statistical parameters are determined. The statistical parameters are obtained for resistance bias factor and the coefficient of variation which were found to be equal to 1.053 and 0.137 respectively. Finally, reliability analyses are accomplished using the limit state functions of ACI-318 and ASCE-7 depending on the calculated statistical parameters. The results show that the RC haunched beams have higher sensitivity and riskiness than the RC prismatic beams.
Because of a sudden growth of the research of fatigue failure, recent machines or structures have been designed by damage tolerance design in many fields. Consequently, it is the most primary factor to clarity the specific character of fatique failure in the design of machines or structures considering reliability. A statistical analysis is required to analyze the outcome of an experiment or a life estimate by reason of that fatigue failure contains lots of random elements. Reliability analysis which has tukenn the place of the existing analyses in the consideration of the uncertainty of a material, is a very efficient way. Even reliability analysis, however, is not a perfect way to analyses the uncertainties of all the materials. This thesis would refer to a newly conceived data analysis that the coefficient of a system could cause the ambiguity of the relationship of an input and output.

This paper deals with the reliability analysis of design formulations derived for predicting the punching shear capacity of FRP-reinforced two-way slabs. Firstly, a new design code formulation was derived by means of gene expression programming. This formulation differs from the existing ones as the slab length (L) was introduced in the equation. Next, the proposed formulation was tested for its generalization capability by a parametric study. Then, the stochastic analyses of derived and existing formulations were performed by Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, the reliability analyses of these equations were carried out based on the results of stochastic analysis and the ultimate state function of ASCE-7 and ACI-318 (2011). The results indicate that the prediction performance of new formulation is significantly higher as compared to available design equations and its reliability index is within acceptable limits.
Assessment of existing concrete bridges is a challenge for owners. It has greater economic impact when compared to designing new bridges. When using conventional linear analyses, judgment of the engineer is required to understand the behavior of redundant structures after the first element in the structural system reaches its ultimate capacity. The alternative is to use a predictive tool such as advanced nonlinear finite element analyses (ANFEA) to assess the overall structural behavior. This paper proposes a new reliability framework for the assessment of existing bridge structures using ANFEA. A general framework defined in previous works, accounting for material uncertainties and concrete model performance, is adapted to the context of the assessment of existing bridges. A "shifted" reliability problem is defined under the assumption of quasi-deterministic dead load effects. The overall exercise is viewed as a progressive pushover analysis up to structural failure, where the actual safety index is compared at each event to a target reliability index.
Reliability management is seen as central pivot for quality assurance. This paper analyses the reliability practices in Korea and compares with Japan's. I would like to suggest the way to cope with the gray part of the reliability management in Korea through my experiences.
In a fire hazard analysis (FHA) for nuclear power plant, various electrical circuit analyses are performed in the parts of fire loading analysis, fire modeling analysis, separation criteria analysis, associated circuit analysis, and multiple spurious operation analysis. Thus, electrical circuit analyses are very important areas so that reliability of the analysis results should be assured. This study is to establish essential electrical elements for each analysis for verification of the reliability of the electrical circuit analyses in the fire hazard analysis for nuclear power plants. Applying the results derived by the study to domestic nuclear power plants, it is expected to determine the adequacy of the fire hazard analysis report and contribute to the reliability of the fire hazard analysis of those plants.
