It is important to accurately measure and control the relative humidity of humidified gas entering a PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cell stack because the level of humidification strongly affects the performance and durability of the stack. Humidity measurement devices can be used to directly measure the relative humidity, but they cost much to be equipped and occupy spaces in a fuel cell system. We present soft sensors for predicting the relative humidity without actual humidity measuring devices. By combining FIR (finite impulse response) model with PLS (partial least square) and SVM (support vector machine) regression models, DPLS (dynamic PLS) and DSVM (dynamic SVM) soft sensors were developed to correctly estimate the relative humidity of humidified gases exiting a planar-type membrane humidifier. The DSVM soft sensor showed a better prediction performance than the DPLS one because it is able to capture nonlinear correlations between the relative humidity and the input data of the soft sensors. Without actual humidity sensors, the soft sensors presented in this work can be used to monitor and control the humidity in operation of PEM fuel cell systems.
Relative reactivity of various Al-substituted dialkylalans ($AlR_2(X)$) in reduction of acetone has been studied with density functional theory and MP2 method. Formation of the alan dimers and the alan-acetone adduct, and the transition state for the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) type reduction of the adduct were calculated to figure out the energy profile. Formation of dimeric alans is highly exothermic. Both the relative free energies for acetone-alan adduct formation and the TS barriers for the MPV type reduction with respect to alan dimers and acetone were calculated and they show the same trend. Based on these energetic data, relative reactivity of alans is expected to be; $AlR_2(Cl)$ > $AlR_2(OTf)$ > $AlR_2(O_2CCF_3)$ > $AlR_2(F)$ > $AlR_2(OMs)$ > $AlR_2(OAc)$ > $AlR_2(OMe)$ > $AlR_2(NMe_2)$. The energy profile is relatively well correlated with the experimental order of the reactivity of Al-substituted dialkylalans. It is noted that the substituents of alans have initial effects on the relative free energies for the carbonyl-adduct formation. Therefore, an $AlR_2(X)$ which forms a more stable carbonyl-adduct is more reactive in carbonyl reduction.
This study was performed to determine proper fan and heater management schemes for natural air drying of rough rice in round steel bin with stirring device under Korean weather conditions. A computer simulation model was developed to predict moisture content changes, energy requirements, and drymatter losses during drying of rough rice by natural air. Drying test was conducted to validate the simulation model using round steel bin of holding capacity of 300ton at Rice Processing Complex in Jincheon. The bin was filled with rough rice every day and mixing by stirring device. Moisture contents, ambient air temperatures, relative humidities, static pressures in plenum chamber in the bin, airflow rates, and electrical and fuel energy were measured. Relative errors of moisture content changes predicted by the simulation model were below 5ft, and relative errors of final moisture content, final grain weight, required energy ranged from 0.9% to 6%. These not levels indicated that the simulation model can satisfactorily predict the performance factors of natural air drying system such as drying rates and energr consumptions comparing error level of 10% to 15% in other drying simulation models generally used in dryer desists. Twelve different fan and heater management schemes were evaluated using the computer simulation model based on three hourly weather data from Suweon for the period of 1952-1994. The best management schemes were selected comparing the drymatter losses, required drying times, required energy consumptions. Operating fan without heating only when ambient relative humidity was below 85% or 90% appeared to be the most effective method of In operation in favorable drying weather. Under adverse drying climates or to reduce required drying time, operating fan continuously, and heating air with $1.5^{\circ}C$ temperature rise only when ambient relative humidity was over 85% appeared to be the most suitable method.
The latest UK Climate Projections (UKCP09) show that mean daily temperatures will increase everywhere in the United Kingdom. This will significantly affect the thermal and energy performance of the current building stock. This study examines an institutional fully glazed building and looks into the changes in the cooling loads and thermal comfort of the occupants during the occupied hours of the non-heating period. Furthermore, it investigates the effect of relative humidity (RH) on thermal comfort. The Design Summer Year (DSY) 2003 for London Heathrow has been used as a baseline for this study and the DSY 2050s High Emissions scenario was used to examine the performance of the building under future weather conditions. Results show a 21% increase of the cooling loads between the two examined scenarios. Thermal comfort appears to be slightly improved during the months of May and September and marginally worsen during the summer months. Results of the simulation show that a relative humidity control at 40% can improve the thermal comfort for 53% of the occupied hours. A comparison of the thermal comfort performance during the hottest week of the year, shows that when the relative humidity control is applied thermal comfort performance of the 2050s is similar or better compared to the thermal comfort performance under the baseline.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the acceptance of solar photovoltaic energy use based on the Diffusion of Innovations Theory. The study looks at a total of 27 rural residents - among them 15 who accepted solar photovoltaic energy through a support system and 12 who accepted solar photovoltaic energy through government support of the village. Paper-based interviews were also conducted to gather additional information. The findings of the study indicated that relative advantages and observability are huge factors in a rural resident's decision to accept solar photovoltaic energy. In order to revitalize innovation in the use of solar photovoltaic energy, This study suggests that we must utilize relative advantages and reinforce trialable observations.

A two-dimensional numerical investigation is performed to study the influence of slot width of multi-stage stationary floating overtopping wave energy devices on overtopping flow rate and performance. The hydraulic efficiency based on captured crest energy of different device layouts is compared with that of single-stage device to determine the effect of the geometrical design. The results show optimal trends giving a huge increase in overtopping energy. Plots of efficiency versus the relative slot width show that, for multi-stage devices, the greatest hydraulic efficiency is achieved at an intermediate value of the variable within the parametric range considered, relative slot width of 0.15 and 0.2 depending on design layouts. Moreover, an application of adaptive slot width of multi-stage device is investigated. The numerical results show that the overall hydraulic efficiency of non-adaptive and adaptive slot devices are approximately on par. The effect of adaptive slot width on performance can be negligible.
We investigate driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence by including the effects of expansion and collapse of background medium. The main goal is to quantify the evolution and saturation of strength and characteristic lengths of magnetic fields in expanding and collapsing media. Our findings are as follows. First, with expansion and collapse of background medium, the magnetic energy density per comoving volume does not saturate; either it keeps decreasing or increasing with time. The magnetic energy density relative to the kinetic energy density strongly depends on the expanding or collapsing rate. Second, at scales close to the energy injection (or driving) scale, the slope of magnetic field power spectrum shallows with expansion but steepens with collapse. Third, various characteristic lengths, relative to the energy injection scale, decrease with expansion but increase with collapse. We discuss the astrophysical implications of our findings.
The application of chemical mechanical polishing(CMP) has a long history. Recently, CMP has been used in the planarization of the interlayer dielectric(ILD) and metal used to form the multilevel interconnections between each layers. Therefore, much research has been conducted to understand the basic mechanism of the CMP process. CMP performed by the down force and the relative speed between pad and wafer with slurry is typical tribo-system. In general, studies have indicated that removal rate is relative to energy. Accordingly, in this study, CMP results will be analyzed by a viewpoint of the friction energy using friction force measurement. The results show that energy would not constant in the same removal rate conditions

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of collimator width on effective atomic number (EAN), relative electron density (RED), and stopping power ratio (SPR) measured by dual-layer dual-energy computed tomography (DL-DECT). Methods: CIRS electron density calibration phantoms with two different arrangements of material plugs were scanned by DL-DECT with two different collimator widths. The first phantom included two dense bone plugs, while the second excluded dense bone plugs. The collimator widths selected were 64 mm×0.625 mm for wider collimators and 16 mm×0.625 mm for narrow collimators. The scanning parameters were 120 kVp, 0.33 second gantry rotation, 3 mm slice thickness, B reconstruction filter, and spectral level 4. An image analysis portal system provided by a computed tomography (CT) manufacturer was used to derive the EAN and RED of the phantoms from the combination of low energy and high energy CT images. The EAN and RED were compared between the images scanned using the two different collimation widths. Results: The CT images with the wider collimation width generated more severe artifacts, particularly with high-density material (i.e., dense bone). RED and EAN for tissues (excluding lung and bones) with the wider collimation width showed significant relative differences compared to the theoretical value (4.5% for RED and 20.6% for EAN), while those with the narrow collimation width were closer to the theoretical value of each material (2.2% for EAN and 2.3% for RED). Scanning with narrow collimation width increased the accuracy of SPR estimation even with high-density bone plugs in the phantom. Conclusions: The effect of CT collimation width on EAN, RED, and SPR measured by DL-DECT was evaluated. In order to improve the accuracy of the measured EAN, RED, and SPR by DL-DECT, CT scanning should be performed using narrow collimation widths.
