  • The purpose of the study is to evaluate engineering properties of Ferro Nickel Slag (FNS) and to investigate the effects of FNS on potential contamination of surrounding soil and water through small and large chamber tests. Soil conditions in the chamber tests were made as closely as possibile to the field conditions. In order to simulate different types of water, we used fresh water, acidic water and seawater. Sand soils were made with relative densities of 40% and 60%, and clay with the degree of compaction of 90%. After flushing water through the FNS in the chambers was completed, the PH test was performed for the water flowing out of the chambers and the soil samples were collected for soil pollution analysis. Based on the results of the chamber tests, although the pollution level was slightly higher in the silt than in the sand, the environmental effect that FNS causes the surrounding soil was found to be very minimal. This indicates that FNS can be used as construction material in place of natural aggregates.

  • In order to verify the applicability of the developed modified parallel IWAN model. two types of cyclic torsional shear tests were performed using Kum-Kang and Toyoura sands. One was a symmetric-limit loading test and the other was an irregular loading test. Model parameters were derived from the symmetric limit loading tests at various relative densities and confining pressures. The modified parallel IWAN model can predict the cyclic hardening behavior of sands very well as increasing loading cycles in the symmetric-limit tests. Irregular loading tests were performed using the loading shape suggested by Pyke(1979). Cyclic behaviors under irregular loading were simulated using model parameters derived from symmetric limit loading test results of similar loading conditions. The predicted cyclic hardening behaviors under irregular loading matched well with experimental results and the applicability of the proposed model was verified.

  • The demand for LIBs with higher energy densities has increased continuously because the emergence of wider and more challenging applications including HEV and EV has became imperative. However, in the case of anode material, graphite is insufficient to meet this need. To meet such demand, several type of negative electrode materials like silicon, tin, SiO, and transition metal oxide have been investigated for the advanced lithium secondary batteries. Recently, lithium vanadium oxide, which has a layered structure, is assumed as one of the promising anode material as alternative of graphite. This material shows a high volumetric capacity, which is 1.5 times higher than that of graphite. However, relative low electrical conductivity and particle fracture, which results in the electrolyte decomposition and loss of electric contact between electrode, induce rapid capacity decay. In this report, we investigated the effect of electrolyte additive on the electrochemical characteristics of lithium vanadium oxide.

  • The ever-increasing amount of waste vinyl is causing big environmental problems. In particular, those from farming industry are sometimes left on site or even illegally reclaimed due to the lack of environmental concerns and capacity for collection, which worsens the situation. It is, therefore, believed that the recycling of waste vinyl is the most ideal solution in the viewpoint of environmental preservation. In this context, the potential of vinyl strip as a ground reinforcing material is investigated to expand the application of waste vinyl recycling. In this study, a series of uniaxial compression tests and resonant column tests were performed for sand specimens reinforced with vinyl strips and cement to investigate their reinforcing effects on static and dynamic behaviors. The changes in the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), the shear modulus and the damping ratio according to the mixing ratio of vinyl strips and cements were analysed for sand specimens, having 40% and 60% relative densities, under various mixing conditions. As a result, both the static and dynamic reinforcing effects of vinyl strip-cement mixture were confirmed and the optimum mixing ratio was proposed.

  • (Ba,Sr,Ca)$TiO_3$ powders, which were prepared by sol-gel method using a solution of Ba-, Sr- and Ca-acetate and Ti iso-propoxide, were mixed with organic vehicle and the BSCT thick films were fabricated by the screen-printing techniques on high purity alumina substrates. The structural and dielectirc properties were investigated for various $Dy_2O_3$ doping contents. As a result of thermal analysis, the exothermic peak was observed at around 670^{\circ}C $ due to the formation of the polycrystalline perovskite phase. All BSCT thick films, sintered at $1420^{\circ}C$ for 2h, showed the typical XRD patterns of perovskite polycrystalline structure and no pyrochlore phase was observed. The average grain size of the specimens decreased with increasing amount of $Dy_2O_3$. The average grain size and thickness of the BSCT specimens doped with 0.1 mol% $Dy_2O_3$ were approximately $1.9{\mu}m$ and $70{\mu}m$, respectively. The relative dielectric constant decreased and dielectric loss increased with increasing amount of $Dy_2O_3$, the values of the BSCT thick films doped with 0.1 mol% $Dy_2O_3$ were 3697 and 0.4% at 1 kHz, respectively. The leakage current densities in all BSCT thick films were less than $10^{-9}A/cm^2$ at the applied electric field range of 0-20 kV/cm.

  • This study presents the correlations between quantified particle shape parameters and internal friction angles for nine sand specimens including six natural sands and three crushed sands. Specimens are subjected to 3D X-ray computed tomographic imaging and their particles are segmented through the aid of image processing techniques. Shapes of segmented particles are then quantified through two shape parameters such as sphericity and elongation. The direct shear apparatus enables us to measure peak and critical state friction angles of sand specimens of distinct relative densities. The gathered data show that decreasing sphericity and increasing elongation cause increases in peak and critical state friction angle with similar gradients.

  • $SiO_2$ nanowires were synthesized using the vapor evaporation method. Grown nanowires had a different shapes by kind of substrates. Diameters and lengths of the nanowires increased with increasing growth temperature and time. Mean diameters and lengths of $SiO_2$ nanowire were different by kind of substrates. These variations were attributed to nanowire densities on the substrates. The kind of substrates affected microstructure and PL properties of grown nanowires. In case of $Al_{2}O_3$ and quartz substrates, additional $O_2$ were supported during growth stages, and made a nucleation site. Therefore relative narrow nanowire was grown on $Al_{2}O_3$ and quartz substrates. Optical property were measured by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Relatively broad peak was obtained and mean peak positioned at 450 and 420nm. however in case of quartz substrates, mean peak positioned at 370nm. These peak shift was contributed to the size and substrate effects.

  • Conductive SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were produced by subjection a 40:60(vol%) mixture of zirconium diborided ($ZrB_2$) powder and ${\beta}$-silicon carbide (SiC) matrix to spark plasma sintering (SPS) under argon atmosphere. Inner diameters of graphite mold were $15mm{\varphi}$ and $20mm{\varphi}$, respectively. The relative densities of $15mm{\varphi}$ and $20mm{\varphi}$ sample were 99.4% and 97.88%, respectively. Reactions between ${\beta}$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed via x-ray diffraction (hereafter, XRD) analysis. The result of FE-SEM of fracture face of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was intergranular fracture and that of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample was transgranular fracture. Because the fracture strength of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was much higher than that of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample. The electrical resistivity, $9.37{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was higher than that, $6.17{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample because of densification. Although sintering condition of SPS is same. the properties of sintered SiC-$ZrB_2$ compacts were changed according to inner diameter of graphite mold.

  • Low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology offers significant benefits over the other established packaging technologies for high density, high microwave frequency, and fast signal application. Most conventional electroceraramics do not meet the basic requirements in respect of sinterability for LTCC technology. Attention is, therefore, focused on the role of glasses because of the capability they supply with lower sintering temperatures. In this study, commercial ceramic (MBRT-90) in the system BaO-N $d_2$ $O_3$-Ti $O_2$ (BNT: 40 ~ 80 wt%) and L $a_2$ $O_3$- $B_2$ $O_3$-Ti $O_2$ glass (LBT;60 ~ 20 wt%) were prepared. These glass/ceramic composites were evaluated for sintering behavior, phase evaluation, densities, interface reaction, crystallinity, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties. It was found that the addition LBT glass frits significantly lowered the sintering temperature to below 90$0^{\circ}C$ and as temperature increased (750~90$0^{\circ}C$) densification developed dynamically which was meant to be as over 95% of relative density. It is supposed that in the microstructure, the grain size was increased accompanying with the formation of different phases such as LaB $O_3$ and Ti $O_2$ under the condition of increasing sintering temperature. The sintered bodies represented applicable dielectric properties, namely 20 ~ 40 for $\varepsilon_{{\gamma}}$, ~ 10000 GHz for Q* $f_{0}$ and 10~80 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ for $\tau$$_{f}$. The results suggest that the composite is one of feasible candidates for the microwave use in LTCC technology.y.e use in LTCC technology.y.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the bone mineral density (BMD) and the anthropometric measurements, socioeconomic factors, family history of osteoporosis and other environmental factors affecting BMD in children. One hundred sixty children (80 males, 80 females) in second grade of elementary school in Seoul were recruited; the mean age was 7.7 $\pm$ 0.47 years. Bone mineral density was measured in the lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck (FN), femoral trochanter (FT), and Ward's triangle (WT) by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). Socioeconomic factors, family history of osteoporosis, and other environmental factors were assessed by questionnaire. Bone mineral densities of LS, FN, FT, and WT were 0.677, 0.637, 0.618, and 0.658 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$. BMD of boys was higher than that of girls (LS: 0.685 vs. 0.669, FN: 0.660 vs. 0.614, FT: 0.632 vs. 0.604, WT: 0.678 vs. 0.639 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$). Anthrometric measurements (height, weight relative body weight, circumference of waist and hip) were positively correlated with BMD. With increasing family income, BMD of LS was significantly lowered, and negative correlation was observed between mother's age at birth of subject and the BMD of FN. And the BMD of children with a family history of osteoporosis was significantly lower. However BMDs were not different by educational level of parents, family pattern, delivery term, birth weight, and type of feeding. Further studies are needed to clarify the factors affecting BMD of children and earlier age, included infants and even prenatal life. If any association is revealed and persist until the attainment of peak bone mass, osteoporosis prevention programs are needed to be start very early in the life cycle.
