Evaluate Bond Strength of High Relative Rib Area Bars (높은마디면적 철근의 부착 성능평가)

  • Bond between reinforcing bar and surrounding concrete is supposed to transfer load safely in the process of design of reinforced concrete structures. Bond failure of reinforcing bar generally take place by splitting of the concrete cover as bond force between concrete and reinforcing bars exceeds the confinement of the concrete cover and reinforcement. In this study, to evaluate bond strength of high relative rib area bars, beam-end bond and splice beam specimens are tested and the results are discussed. Higher rib height bars when bars are confined showed higher bond strength than lower rib height bars.

  • Effects of various parameters on bond property between reinforcing bar and concrete are investigated in many researchers, and various study is on going to improve the bond strength. Properties of interface between reinforcement and concrete is important role in bond property. This study analyzed the interfacial bond mechanism between deformed bar and concrete by finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the effect of rib shape. The FEA model in this study is simplified 2D plane stress model. The variables of analysis are selected by rib angle, rib height, rib spacing and relative rib area. From the results of analysis, reinforcing bars with rib angle $30{\sim}60^{\circ}$ showed better bond strength than the others. Bond strength ratio following to the rib height is proportionally increased up to the $0.12d_b$, but rib spacing has little effect on bond strength. The results also indicated that relative rib area can be efficiently represented the properties of deformed shape in reinforcing bars, and zigzagged rib height shape showed excellent bond strength increase.

  • Bond between reinforcing bar and surrounding concrete is supposed to transfer load safely in the process of design of reinforced concrete structures. The effects of defomation properties on bond of reinforcing bars to concrete are studied. Beam-end tests are used to investigate the effects of machining of bars in addition to rib angle and relative rib area. The test results show that bond strength of machined bars were higher than the conventional bars produced in factory. Higher rib height bars with rib angle $30^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}$ showed higher bond strength than lower rib height bars with low angle.

  • One of the reasons for brittle failure in reinforced concrete structures subjected to severe earthquake is due to large local bond-slippage of bars resulting in fast bond degradation between reinforcing bars and concrete. This study aims to evaluate effects of bar deformation height on bond performance, specially, bond degradation under cyclic loading. Bond test specimens were constructed with machined bars with high relative rib areas. The degree of confinement by transverse bars is also another key parameters in this bond test. From test results, amounts of energy dissipation are calculated and compared for each parameter. Test results show that bond strength and stiffness drops significantly as cycles increases. The confinement and high relative rib area are effective to delay bond degradation, as the reduction of bond strength of cyclic loading compared to monotonic loading decreased for bars with large confinement and high relative rib areas. The energy dissipation also increases as the degree of confinement and relative rib area increases. However, tested bars with very high rib areas show that the bond may be damaged at relatively small slip because of high stiffness. The study will help to understand the bond degradation mechanism due to bar deformation height under cyclic loading and be useful to develop new deformed bars with high relative rib areas.

This study aims to evaluate effects of deformation patterns of ribbed reinforcing bars on bond under cyclic loading. Bond test specimens were constructed with machined bars to test the newly developed reinforcing bars with high relative rib areas. The degree of confinement is also another key parameter in this bond test. From the test results under monotonic and cyclic loading, bond strength and stiffness were evaluated. Bond strength and bond stiffness increase as relative rib areas under cyclic loading for specimens highly confined by transverse reinforcement. The increase rates of the bond performance under cyclic loading are larger than those of specimens under monotonic loading. The developed bars with high relative rib areas will contribute for better bond performance for reinforced concrete structures subjected to severe seismic loadings.

  • A simple expression to predict bond strength of reinforcing bars with rib deformation to the surrounding is derived for the case of splitting bond failure. Finite element analysis is used to model the confining behavior of concrete cover. The roles of the interfacial properties, specifically, the friction coefficient, cohesion, the relative rib area and the rib face angle are examined. Values of bond strength obtained using the analytical model are in good agreement with the bond test results from the previous studies. The analytical model provides insight into interfacial bond mechanisms and the effects of the key variables on the bond strength of deformed bars to concrete. Based on the comparison between the analytical results and the test results, the values of cohesion, coefficient of friction, and the effective rib face angle are proposed.

Shear resistance behaviors of a newly puzzle shape of crestbond rib shear connector: An experimental study

  • A newly puzzle shape of crestbond rib shear connector is a type of ductile perfobond rib shear connector. This shear connector has some advantages, including relatively easy rebar installation and cutting, as well as the higher shear resistance strength. Thus, this study proposed a newly puzzle shape of crestbond rib with a "${\mho}$" shape, and its shear resistance behaviors and shear strengths were examined using push-out tests. Five main parameters were considered in the push-out specimens to evaluate the effects of shear resistance parameters such as the dimensions of the crestbond rib, transverse rebars in the crestbond dowel, concrete strength, rebar strength, and dowel action on the shear strength. The shear loading test results were used to compare the changes in the shear behaviors, failure modes, and shear strengths. It was found that the concrete strength and number of transverse rebars in the crestbond rib were significantly related to its shear resistance. After the initial bearing resistance behavior of the concrete dowel, a relative slip occurred in all the specimens. However, its rigid behavior to shear loading decreased the ductility of the shear connection. The cross-sectional area of the crestbond rib was also shown to have a minor effect on the shear resistance of the crestbond rib shear connector. The failure mechanism of the crestbond rib shear connector was complex, and included compression, shear, and tension. As a failure mode, a crack was initiated in the middle of the concrete slab in a vertical direction, and propagated with increasing shear load. Then, horizontal cracks occurred and propagated to the front and rear faces of the specimens. Based on the results of this study, a design shear strength equation was proposed and compared with previously suggested equations.

Development of Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Polymer Reinforcing Bars and Evaluation of the Bond Properties (하이브리드 FRP 보강근의 형상개발과 부착성능 평가)

  • The various rib geometry of hybrid fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars were analyzed by finite element method. From the analysis result, two types of hybrid FRP reinforcing bars such as spiral and cross type with the same dimension of rib geometry were fabricated in this study. To evaluate the bond properties of them, direct pull-out test was performed. All testing procedures including specimens preparation, set-up of test equipments and measuring devices were made in accordance with the recommendations of CSA Standard S806-02. From the test results, it was found that cross type hybrid FRP reinforcing bars showed the highest bond strength than that of the others due to the higher relative rib area.

Bond Stress-Strain Predict Model with Inner Cover Thickness of Steel Wire Used in Void Deck Plate (중공 데크플레이트에 사용된 철선의 내부피복두께에 따른 부착응력-변형률 예측모델)

  • In case of evaluating the bond stress of a void deck plate using a wire steel, there is no standard formula considering both the influence on the void and the type of the reinforcing bar. Therefore we proposed a model equation considered the bond characteristics of the void deck plate. A total of 46 specimens was carried out a direct pull-out test and the test variables were the presence of a void body, type of reinforcing bar, the inner cover thickness according to the location of reinforcing bars and bond region. As a result of the comparison between the steel bar and steel wire, the bond stress of the steel wire with the relative rib area of 0.071 is 4.5 ~ 28.58% lower than that of the steel bar with 0.092 and the bond stress reduction rate increases when the inner cover thickness is insufficient. In the case of the inner cover thickness of $1.7d_b$ and $2.7d_b$, the bond stress was reduced to 48.7 ~ 68.4%. In the inner cover thickness was $4.9d_b$ and $5.2d_b$, the bond stresses were equivalent to those of the solid specimens. It was confirmed that the average bond stress and strain were affected by the inner cover thickness. Therefore the predicted model for one module of the void deck plate is proposed and verified by considering the bond characteristics of the void deck plate.
