  • The stress-strain relationship of concrete in flexure is one of the essential parameters in assessing the flexural strength and ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. An overview of previous research studies revealed that the presence of strain gradient would affect the maximum concrete stress developed in flexure. However, no quantitative model was available to evaluate the strain gradient effect on concrete under flexure. Previously, the authors have conducted experimental studies to investigate the strain gradient effect on maximum concrete stress and respective strain and developed two strain-gradient-dependent factors k3 and ko for modifying the flexural concrete stress-strain curve. As a continued study, the authors herein will extend the investigation of strain gradient effects on flexural strength and ductility of RC columns to concrete strength up to 100 MPa by employing the strain-gradient-dependent concrete stress-strain curve using nonlinear moment-curvature analysis. It was evident from the results that both the flexural strength and ductility of RC columns are improved under strain gradient effect. Lastly, for practical engineering design purpose, a new equivalent rectangular concrete stress block incorporating the combined effects of strain gradient and concrete strength was proposed and validated. Design formulas and charts have also been presented for flexural strength and ductility of RC columns.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties of reactive powder concrete (RPC) with a constant cement to silica fume ratio of 4 were investigated. In the experimental program, reactive powder concretes with steel fiber at different ratios were produced. Five productions using quartz sand with a maximum grain size of 0.6 mm were performed. A superplasticizer with a ratio of 3% of the cement was used for all productions. $40{\times}40{\times}160mm$ prismatic specimens were prepared and tested for flexural and compression. The specimens were exposed to two different curing conditions as autoclave and standard curing condition. Autoclave exposure was performed for 3 hours under a pressure of 2 MPa. It was observed that the compressive strength of concrete, along with the flexural strength exposed to autoclave was quite high compared to the strength of concretes subjected to standard curing. The results obtained indicated that the compressive strength, along with the flexural strength of autoclaved concrete increased as the amount of cement used increases. Approximately 15% increase in flexural strength was achieved with a 4% steel fiber addition. The maximum compressive strength that has been reached is over 210 MPa for reactive powder concrete for the same steel fiber ratio and with a cement content of $960kg/m^3$. The relationship between compressive strength and flexural strength of reactive powder concrete exposed to both curing conditions was also identified.

  • $Al_2O_3$/SiC particulate reinforced (Metal Matrix Composites) MMCs which were produced by using stir casting process, bending strength and hardening behaviour were obtained using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique that uses full factorial design. Factor variables and their ranges were: particle size $2-60{\mu}m$; the stirring speed 450 rpm, 500 rpm and the stirring temperature $620^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$. An empirical equation was derived from test results to describe the relationship between the test parameters. This model for the tensile strength of the hybrid composite materials with $R^2$ adj = 80% for the bending strength $R^2$ adj = 89% were generated from the data. The regression coefficients of this model quantify the tensile strength and bending strengths of the effects of each of the factors. The interactions of all three factors do not present significant percentage contributions on the tensile strength and bending strengths of hybrid composite materials. Analysis of the residuals versus was predicted the tensile strength and bending strengths show a normalized distribution and thereby confirms the suitability of this model. Particle size was found to have the strongest influence on the tensile strength and bending strength.

  • Recently, the construction industry has seen the emergence of interior and exterior finishes using ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and colored concrete products using precast concrete (PC). However, the excessive amount of pigment used for coloring reduces the strength of the concrete. There is a need to improve the durability and chromaticity of colored concrete, and further analytical studies on the properties of colored concrete are also required. Therefore, in this paper, colored ultra-high strength cement composites (C-UHSCC) containing red and green inorganic pigments were prepared, and the compressive strength and color of the specimens were measured according to the age, and the correlation between strength and color was analyzed by simple linear regression analysis using R2 value. The results showed that the red color was highly correlated with L* and a*, and the green color was highly correlated with a*. These results can be considered for various concrete formulations, but research is needed to suggest the optimal pigment mixing ratio for proper strength and color development.

  • Physical and mechanical properties of Korean red pine wood grown in Anmyeon-do, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do and Sogwang-ri, Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea were measured and each relationships between them were analyzed. The ring width and latewood proportion along radial axis in Korean red pine at two-regions were measured by collecting the growth core of stands with age class V and IX. The ring width in Korean red pine at two-regions decreased with increasing cambium age. The average ring widths in age class V and IX in Anmyeon-do and Sogwang-ri were 2.865 mm, 1.705 mm, 4.764 mm, and 2.228 mm, respectively. The ring widths in Anmyeon-do were measured from 23% to 40% smaller than Sogwang-ri. The latewood proportion was negatively related with the ring width of Korean red pine at two-regions. The relationship between physical and mechanical properties of specimens for compressive and bending strength tests were analyzed with simple regression analysis. The relationship between latewood proportion and oven-dry density were positive and statistically significant. The relationship between latewood proportion and mechanical properties was slightly positive and not statistically significant, except the specimens for bending strength test of Anmyeon-do. The relationship between oven-dry density and mechanical properties was positive. It was just statistically significant in the specimens of Sogwang-ri. The compressive and bending strengths of Anmyeon-do and Sogwang-ri were 51.3 MPa, 80.5 MPa, 37.7 MPa, and 63.7 MPa, respectively. The strength difference between two-regions was determined to due to difference of ring width and latewood proportion by age class.

  • The mechanical behaviors related to the strain rate effect and the tensile strength of high-strength concrete were investigated in this study. For this purpose, concrete cylinder specimens with 4 different compressive strengths from 232kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 1113kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ were tested and analysed on the mechanical properties(stress-strain relationship, compressive, modulus of elasticity, strain at peak compressive stress). From this experimental and analytical study, it seems that the current prediction model(ACI) for modulus of rupture need to be refined. Therefore, more refined equations for evaluation tensile strength of concrete are proposed.

  • With increasing use of high-strength concrete tied columns in structural engineering, it becomes necessary to examine the applicability of related sections of the current design codes. This experimental study was conducted to investigate the behavior of eccentrically loaded high-strength concrete columns. Column specimens with concrete strength 234, 437, 703kgf/㎠ were tested under monotonically increasing eccentric compression. The test parameters included the longitudinal reinforcement ratio, eccentric distance and concrete compressive strength. The analytical results obtained from the stress-strain relationship and the ACI's equivalent rectangular stress block are compared with experimental test results.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of transverse steel in reinforced concrete tied columns subjected to monotonically increasing axial compression. Eighteen large-scale columns($260{\times}260{\times}1,200mm$) were tested. Effects of such main variables as concrete compressive strength, configurations of transverse steel, transverse reinforcement ratio, spacing of transverse steel, and spalling of concrete cover were investigated. High-strength concrete columns under concentric axial loads show extremely brittle behavior unless the columns are confined with transverse steel that can provide sufficiently high lateral confinement pressure. A consistent decrease in the deformability of the column test specimens was observed with increasing concrete strength. Test results of this study were compared with existing confinement models of modified Kent-Park, Sheikh-Uzumeri, Mander, and Saatcioglu-Razvi. The comparison indicates many existing models to predict the behavior of confined concrete overestimate or underestimate the ductility of confined concrete.

  • This study was carried out to investigate quantitatively the relationship between the water binder ratio and the concrete strength using finely ground granulated furnace blast slag. In the experiment, the compressive strength and elastic modulus of concrete which slag contents are 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% at 7days and 28days age. As a result, the compressive strength have a high correlation with slag contents and water binder ratio. Thus, it is possible to calculate the water binder ratio using compressive strength of concrete contented with slag.
