Purpose: The aim of this study was to construct a structural equation model that would further explain the continuously increasing substance use disorder in Korean adolescents. Methods: Survey visits using a structured questionnaire were conducted with 3,885 students in 2 middle schools and 2 high schools in Busan. A total of 13 instruments were used in this model. The analysis of data was done with both SPSS 14.0 for descriptive statistics and AMOS 5.0 for covariance structure analysis. Results: Based on the constructed model, belief on substance use was found to have a significantly direct effect in influencing adolescent substance use. In addition, other factors such as family environment, satisfaction with school life, self-concept, social support, and personality vulnerability indirectly affected substance use. The final modified model yielded Chi-square=2,987(p<.001), df=121, ${\chi}^2$/df=22.1, GFI=.96, AGFI=.93, NFI=.91, PNFI=.72, PGFI=.72, RMSEA=.07 and exhibited fit indices. Conclusion: This study constructed a model that addresses the factors related to adolescent substance use and explains the relationship of these factors in influencing substance use among Korean adolescents. Findings from this study can contribute to designing appropriate prevention strategies to reduce substance related disorders in adolescents.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to take around the oriental medical treatment about substance related disorder in china. Method : We review the studies which are published by six different journal in China since 1992 to 2002 involved in substance related disorders. Result 1. The kinds of substance which is the subject of each study. It suggest that the narcotics-withdrawal patients in china take kinds of opium many more than phillopon or barbiturate, cocain etc. especially the heroine takes the most portion in the kinds of opium. 2. The type of chinese medicine demonstration which is about the addiction and withdrawal. There are many symptoms in the each period of withdrawal, According to the each period demonstration, the herbal formula must be different. 3. The formula used in treatment and the substance which is used in common Codonopsis radix is widely used, and pinellia ternata, aractylodes japonica, citrus nobilis, vegetable worms, angelica gigas, zizyphus jujuba, panax ginseng, astragalus membranaceus etc are also used in treatment. 4. The methods of acupunture treatment Hapkok(LI-4), Naegwan(PC6), and Sanyinjiao(SP6) are the widely used acu-points. in addition to these acupoints, there are waegwan(TE5) choksamli(ST36) hanggan(LR2)etc. Conclusion : We expect that this review about substance related disorders in TCM help the clinical study of substance related disorders in Korean medicine.
To elucidate the effect of calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP), vasoactive intestinal peptide(VIP) and substance P was investigated with perivascular nerve stimulation and treatment of peptides from polygraph in the isolated renal artery of rabbit. 1. The neurogenic contraction induced by perivascular nerve stimulation was the frequency-dependent manner(264 Hz) in the isolated renal artery of rabbit. 2. CGRP and VIP caused the relaxation on the precontraction with noradrenaline($10{\mu}m$) on the presence and absence of endothelium in the isolated renal artery of rabbit. 3. Substance P caused the endothelium-dependent relaxation on the precontraction with noradrenaline($10{\mu}m$) in the isolated renal artery of rabbit. 4. CGRP and VIP inhibited the neurogenic contraction by the perivascular nerve stimulation(0.3 ms, 80 V, 50 Hz, 1 sec) on the absence and presence of endothelium in the isolated renal artery of rabbit. 5. Substance P inhibited on the neurogenic contraction by the perivascular nerve stimulation with the endothelium-dependent in the isolated renal artery of rabbit.
Background: Several biochemical mediators, such as substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and prostaglandin $E_2$, have been demonstrated to be involved in herniated or degenerated disc-induced radiculopathy. The authors tested the hypothesis that these mediators would existed in the epidural space of humans. Methods: Thirty nine patients were divided into two groups; 27 patients, who were diagnosed with spinal stenosis (stenosis group), and 12 scheduled for epidural anesthesia, without a history of back pain (control group). Under fluoroscopic guidance, an epidural catheter was introduced through the caudal space and placed into the anterior and posterior spaces, up to and around the epidural adhesive area, in the stenosis group. In the control group, the catheter was placed into the posterior epidural space through the L3-4 or L4-5 intervertebral space. Epidural irrigation was performed with 10 ml of saline, via an epidural catheter. Aspirated lavage fluid was collected, and the concentrations of biochemical mediators (substance P, CGRP and prostaglandin $E_2$) measured using an enzyme immunoassay kit. Results: Substance P, CGRP and prostaglandin $E_2$ were detected in all the epidural lavage fluids from both groups. The concentrations of substance P and prostaglandin $E_2$ in the stenosis group were higher than those of the control (P < 0.05). However, there was no difference in the CGRP levels between the two groups. In the stenosis group, the concentrations of these three mediators in the anterior epidural space were no different to those in the posterior space. Conclusions: These results suggest that biochemical mediators, such as substance P and prostaglandin $E_2$, in the epidural space might be partly involved in pain mechanism associated with spinal stenosis.
Today, toxicology is used for many purpose, in many fields. Classification of special toxic effect is related next 4 important principles. 1. The chemical substance must move to target organ or tissue that can induce Biological effect. For this movement, we have to understand the physical-chemical characteristic of substance, and the rout of absorption, metabolism, diffusion and excretion of toxic substance. 2. Every biological effect that induced by chemical substance is not harmful. For example, some specific chemical substance is not harmful in liver enzyme system. 3. The strength of biological effect induced by chemical substance is deep related with dose. Nearly all substance is not effective below the specific dose, and it may toxic to death over the specific dose. It is the 'Dose - response relationship' But carcinogen may toxic whether it is law dose or not. 4. The information that was obtained by experimental animal test, could have to adapt in human biology. Because biological effect of chemical substance could be different in every biological species. In past, drugs was obtained by animal or plants. But in the future, it could be obtained by biochemistry, and genome project. Therefore, in Oriental medicine, research and approach is needed at this time, and have to develop new method of experience in toxic method.
Substance identification is the first step in implementing chemical legislation, such that subsequent hazard and risk assessments can be accurately followed. Based on the web page and related guidance documents of the European Chemicals Agency and available consortia information, the procedure for substance identification carried out in Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is surveyed. In this study, the importance of substance identification and substance sameness check, as well as the necessity of generating a substance identity profile (SIP) are considered. In addition, the SIPs of several substance types are presented, which focused on information utilization in the instrumental analysis results and organization of information to generate the SIP. Analytical science can contribute to the accurate and effective implementation of chemical regulation at the starting stage of substance identification. However, understanding of the regulation and consequent final wrap-up of analytical results as a SIP should be followed for communication among registrants in Substance Information Exchange Forum (SIEF) as well as with related authorities.
The effects of removing the endothelium on the vasodilatory response to substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) was examined in the isolated rabbit renal artery. The vasodilator response to substance P ($0.1{\mu}M$) was completely absent in vessels in which the endothelium had previously been removed. There was no significant difference in the vasodilatation produced in response to CGRP ($0.1{\mu}M$), or VIP ($0.1{\mu}M$) in the intact and removed-endothelium rabbit renal artery segments. L-NAME ($100{\mu}M$) significantly reduced the vasodilatory response to substance P ($0.1{\mu}M$). This inhibition was significantly attenuated when L-arginine (10 mM) was also present in the organ bath along with L-NAME ($100{\mu}M$). Indomethacin ($1{\mu}M$) did not significantly affect the vasodilatation produced in response to substance P ($0.1{\mu}M$). The inhibitory effect of L-NAME ($100{\mu}M$) and indomethacin ($1{\mu}M$) on the vasodilatory response to substance P ($0.1{\mu}M$) was not significantly different from that produced by L-NAME ($100{\mu}M$) alone. This study indicates that substance P induced vasodilatation via an endothelium-dependent mechanism in the isolated rabbit renal artery. It also established that CGRP and VIP induced vasodilatation by an endothelium-independent mechanism and substance P-induced vasodilatation is at least partially via NO.
The larynx has three major functions such as protective reflex, respiration and phonation, and is richly innervated by sensory, sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. The sensory innervation of the laryngeal mucosa, which is involved in the perception of pain, mechanical and chemical irritation, prtects the airway via various laryngeal reflexes. We studied the distribution of Substance P (SP) and Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) sensory fibers in the rat's larynx using the immuno-histochemical methods. Many SP and CGRP immunoreactive fibers were found in all regions of the laryngeal mucosa except the vocal cords. SP immunoreactive fibers showed a very similar distribution to the CGRP fibers in the epithelium and submucosa. But SP immunoreactive fibers were sparser than CGRP immunoreactive fibers in distribution density. Both reactive fibers were denser in the supraglottic region than subglottic region. Especially, intraepithelial fibers displayed the densest innervation to the laryngeal surface of the epiglottis. h the subepithelium, SP and CGRP immunoreactive fibers were distributed along the wall of vessels and around the glands. The present results suggest that the regional distribution of SP and CGRP immunoreactivity may be responsible for the protective reflex function of the laryngeal inlet.
Dorsal root ganglion(DRG) cells are primary sensory neurons which contain some biologically active neuropeptides which play a role as neurotransmitters or neuromodulators. This study was performed to observe normal distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP) immunoreactive cells and colocalization of CGRP and SP in a single DRG cell of the lumbar DRGs($L_1{\sim}L_6$) in the Wistar Kyoto(WKY) rat by immunohistochemistry. About 55.8% of DRG cells contained CGRP-immunoreactivity, while about 12.7% of DRG cells showed SP-immunoreactivity. There was no significant difference in percentage of each neuropeptied-immunoreactive cells between each neuropeptide-immunoreactive cells between each levels of DRGs ($L_1{\sim}L_6$) (p>0.01). In size distribution, CGRP-immunoreactive cells were identified below $1,500{\mu}m^2$; SP-immunoreactive cells below $600{\mu}m^2$. In serial sections, about 86.7% of the SP immunoreactive cells contained CGRP immunoreactivity.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to examine the association between perceived racial discrimination and substance use and the potential moderating effect of perceived parental affection between the two variables. Methods: A total of 101 Korean American adolescents participated in this cross-sectional study utilized an online survey. Descriptive statistics were used to describe for means and frequencies and the patterns of substance use. Logistic regression analysis was also used to examine the association between perceived discrimination and substance use. Results: Ninety percent of the participants reported perceiving racial discrimination, and 21% had used at least one kind of substance in the month prior to taking the survey. The most frequently used substance was alcohol, followed by marijuana and tobacco products. Logistic regression analysis revealed a link between perceived racial discrimination and substance use (OR = 1.74, 95% CI = 1.01, 3.00). However, parental affection did not moderate between racial discrimination and substance use. Conclusion: These findings suggest that perceived racial discrimination is positively associated with substance use among Korean American adolescents, and health care providers, counselors, and school nurses should screen for discrimination-related stress and substance use in this population.
