Study of Corrosion-Induced Failure Mechanisms of Epoxy Coated Reinforcing Steel (Parts I and II)

  • Epoxy coated reinforcing steels (ECRs) were acquired from ten sources and coatings from each source were initially characterized in terms of defects, thickness, solvent extraction weight loss and hardness. Testing involved exposure in three aqueous solutions at elevated temperature (8$0^{\circ}C$) and in chloride-contaminated concrete slabs under outdoor exposure, It was found that the density and size of coating defects was the promary factor affecting ECR performance. The equivalent circuit analysis using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data indicated that the impedance response for well-performing ECR specimens showed no signs of active degradation at the interface although diffusional processes similar to those noted for poorly performing bars occurred here. Experimental results also indicated a relationship between corrosion behavior and bar source. Weight loss upon solvent extraction correlated with impedance reduction from hot water exposure. Coating defects during most of the tests, especially in high pH solutions containing chloride ions. ECRs with excessive coating defects, either initially present or ones which developed in service, performed poorly in every test category regardless of source. Forms of coating failure were extensive rusting at defects, blistering, wet adhesion loss, cathodic delamination, underfilm corrosion and coating cracks. These occurred sequentially or concurrently, depending on the condition of the ECR and nature of the environment

  • An experimental investigation on the ruined RC bridge with 30 years old has been conducted to estimate the durabilities. The ruined RC bridge estimated in this study was located at Kyung-Bu Express Way. First, concrete strength and durability characteristics such as concrete resistivity, chloride content were estimated. Second, it was to test reinforcing corrosion embedded in slab of bridge. And, third, tensile strength and yield strength of reinforcing bar corroded and not corroded were estimated. This bridge inspection provides the most common cause of defects and deterioration and the results of this inspections give more specific information than those of laboratory inspections do.

Corrosion Behavior of Cr-bearing Corrosion Resistant Rebar in Concrete with Chloride Ion Content

  • Conventional studies have focused on the reduction in the water-cement ratio, the use of various admixtures, etc., to ensure the durability of reinforced concrete structures against such deterioration factors as carbonation and chloride attack. However, improvement in the concrete quality alone is not considered sufficient or realistic for meeting the recent demand for a service life of over 100 years. This study intends to improve the durability of reinforced concrete structures by improvement in the reinforcing steel, which has remained untouched due to cost problems, through subtle adjustment of the steel components to keep the cost low. As a fundamental study on the performance of Cr-bearing rebars in steel reinforced concrete structures exposed to corrosive environments, The test specimens were made by installing 8 types of rebars in concretes with a chloride ion content of 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4 and $24kg/m^3$. Corrosion accelerated curing were then conducted with them. The corrosion resistance of Cr-bearing rebars was examined by measuring crack widths, half-cell potential, corrosion area and weight loss after 155 cycles of corrosion-accelerating curing. The results of the study showed that the corrosion resistance increased as the Cr content increased regardless of the content of chloride ions, and that the Cr-bearing rebars with a Cr content of 5% and 9% showed high corrosion resistance in concretes with a chloride ion content of 1.2 and $2.4kg/m^3$, respectively.

화학적 환경에 노출된 콘크리트 보강용 FRP 보강근의 장기 효과 (Long-Term Effect of Chemical Environments on FRP Reinforcing Bar for Concrete Reinforcement)

  • 철근의 부식은 철근콘크리트 구조물의 주요파괴 원인이다. 철근의 부식에 대한 문제점을 해결할 가능성이 있는 재료 중 FRP 보강근은 그 가능성이 높다. 그렇지만 FRP 보강근은 보강철근과 다른 파괴 매카니즘으로 의하여 현저하게 성능이 저하될 가능성을 가지고 있다. 이와 같은 환경에는 알칼리, 산, 염해 및 물과 수분 등이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 FRP 보강근의 화학적 환경하에서의 내구성능을 평가하고자 하였으며 사용된 FRP 보강근은 2가지 종류의 CFRP 보강근 및 GFRP 보강근, 한가지 종류의 AFRP 보강근으로 알칼리용액, 산용액, 염해환경 및 중성용액에 노출시켰다. FRP 보강근의 역학적 특성 및 내구특성은 인장, 압축 및 전단시험을 통하여 평가하였으며 시험결과 FRP 보강근은 매우 혹독한 화학적 환경에서 우수한 내구성을 가지고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

  • Bridge structure is known as one of important infrafacilities for comfortable human life. Recent long-span bridges, such as Kwang-Ahn Grand bridge, S대-Hae Grand Bridge, Young-Jong Grand Bridge, etc, have been designed and constructed near the seaside without in-depth consideration of concrete durability problems, It is in particular noted that corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete is very important for the durability enhancement of concrete structures. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the corrosion degree of reinforcing steels in concrete specimens which are exposed to cyclic wet and dry saltwaters, and then to develop pertinent corrosion protection system such as rational cover depth, corrosion inhibitors, cathodic system for reinforced concrete bridges exposed to marine environment.

  • Corrosion of embedded reinforcing bars is recognized as being the major cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. With regard to maintenance strategies of concrete nuclear structures, the monitoring of cracking remains of primary importance. Recently, authors have developed a post-treatment technique to extract crack features from continuous computations. In this paper, such technique is applied to carry out a numerical analysis of an accelerated corrosion test. Obtained results allow highlighting specific propagation and failure mechanisms that characterize corrosion-induced cracking.

  • In order to examine the possibility of practical at low-temperature environment curable cement mortar with chloride and nitrite as cold resistance admixture for rebar corrosion prevention. As a result, chloride was used using nitrite complex in low temperature environment and corrosion performance of rebar was improved and mortar strength was promoted. The ratio of nitrite than chloride applied more than twice, corrosion of the reinforcing bars will not occur even in low temperature environment, cement hydration reaction will be promoted and mortar will prevent freezing damage.

  • Marine concrete structures have been exposed to salt from ocean environments. Chloride-penetration into marine concrete structures should accelerate the corrosion of reinforcement steel, which may severely affect the durability of them. Major concerns are to develop durable concrete for high corrosion resistance of reinforcing steel embedded in concrete. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate adequate usage of corrosion inhibitors by evaluating corrosion level in 80 specimen located in the labatory and in the site. 80 specimen of cube 20${\times}$20${\times}$11.5 and 63 specimen of slab 30${\times}$30${\times}$10 are made for this study.

전도성 광촉매를 이용한 콘크리트 철근의 염해 내구성 향상에 관한 연구 (Improvement of Seawater Corrosion Resistance of Concrete Reinforcing Steel Using by Conductive Photocatalyst)

  • 해양환경에서 콘크리트의 내구성과 철근의 부식은 콘크리트 내부로 침투하는 염소이온에 의해 악화된다. 본 연구에서는 염소이온에 의해 야기되는 콘크리트의 염해부식에 대한 저항성을 향상시키기 위해 전도성 광촉매를 사용하였다. 시험체로는 전도성 활성탄소와 광촉매($TiO_2$)분말을 혼합하여 모르타르와 콘크리트를 제작하였다. 전도성 탄소의 함량이 증가할수록 압축강도는 감소하였다. 전도성 광촉매가 첨가된 시험체가 일반 시험체보다 월등히 우수한 내염해부식성을 나타내었으며 이것은 XRF 시험에 의한 분석 결과 모르타르 또는 콘크리트 내부로의 염소이온 확산이 광촉매 작용에 의해 억제되었기 때문인 것으로 판단되었다. 모르타르 및 콘크리트 내부로의 염소이온 확산계수를 구함으로써 광촉매에 의한 염소이온 확산에 대한 억제반응이 분석되었다.

부식된 철근의 표면 거칠기에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Surface Roughness of Corroded Reinforcing Rebar)

  • 철근부식에 의해 발생된 녹은 철근 주위의 콘크리트에 팽창압력을 발생시켜 콘크리트의 균열유발, 피복콘크리트의 박리나 탈락, 철근의 단면적 감소들을 야기 시킨다. 또한 철근콘크리트 구조물 내에 매입된 철근의 부식은 철근과 콘크리트의 일체 거동을 저하시킴으로써 구조물이 외력에 견딜 수 있는 구조성능의 감소를 초래한다. 본 논문에서는 3차원 스캐너를 이용하여 철근이 부식됨에 따른 철근의 표면적을 측정하여 부식률과 표면 거칠기와의 관계를 파악하였다. 철근부식률 1~2%의 경우에서는 철근 표면적이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 동일 범위내에서 철근의 부착강도가 증가한 기존의 실험결과와 매우 유사한 결과를 나타낸다. 철근부식률 2% 이상에서는 오히려 표면적이 감소하였으며, 이는 단면적 손실로 인한 기존 부착강도 실험과 부합되는 결과를 나타냈다.
