This paper employs computational tools to predict power increase (or speed loss) and propulsion performances in waves of KVLCC2. Two-phase unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using finite volume method; and a realizable k-ε model has been applied for the turbulent closure. The free-surface is obtained by solving a VOF equation. Sliding mesh method is applied to simulate the flow around an operating propeller. Towing and self-propulsion computations in calm water are carried out to obtain the towing force, propeller rotating speed, thrust and torque at the self-propulsion point. Towing computations in waves are performed to obtain the added resistance. The regular short head waves of λ/LPP = 0.6 with 4 wave steepness of H/λ = 0.007, 0.017, 0.023 and 0.033 are taken into account. Four methods to predict speed-power relationship in waves are discussed; Taylor expansion, direct powering, load variation, resistance and thrust identity methods. In the load variation method, the revised ITTC-78 method based on the 'thrust identity' is utilized to predict propulsive performances in full scale. The propulsion performances in waves including propeller rotating speed, thrust, torque, thrust deduction and wake fraction, propeller advance coefficient, hull, propeller open water, relative rotative and propulsive efficiencies, and delivered power are investigated.
Numerical simulations of turbulent two phase flows around KCS have been performed to investigate effects of trim conditions on ship resistance of KCS in short waves by utilizing waves2foam. The wave lengths of LPP/2 and LPP/4 with 1m and 2m wave heights were imposed at inlet boundary. The resistance reduction at 2m trim by head and the increase of resistance at trims by stern were observed regardless of wave lengths and wave heights. The hull pressure on fore-and-aft rather than wave patterns around bulbous bows was mainly responsible for the total resistance coefficients of KCS in short waves. A phase diagram of contribution of hull pressure to the total resistance coefficients disclosed that the phase of representing the maximum resistance in time history played an important role in the effect of trim conditions on ship resistance of KCS in short waves.
Since most merchant vessels are mainly influenced by the added resistance in an actual sea, they could be navigated more efficiently if this added resistance could be precisely predicted and then effectively reduced. In this paper, we have computed the effective horsepower based on the resistance performance in still water and then calculated the added resistance in regular wave in order to estimate a ship's propulsion performance on a voyage. Firstly, we have performed experiments using a model of KCS in a circulating water channel to estimate the flow characteristics around a container ship and the ship's resistance in still water. Then we have calculated the motion response function in regular wave as well as the values for the increase in resistance, and evaluated the ship's motion performance in waves according to the calculated response function. It was found that the resistance in waves increased because the ship's motion response value became larger as the ship's speed increased in the case of head sea. The effect of the added resistance could be reduced by maneuvering the ship to the encounter angle of $120^{\circ}$ in areas of long wavelengths and to head sea in areas of short wavelengths.
The effect of the bow shape on the ship motion response among longitudinal regular waves, is investigated employing the strip theory. The two dimensional hydrodynamic forces such as added mass and damping are calculated by the integral equation method for arbitrary sections. Nine ship models are selected for investigation. They are U, UV and V bow ship forms of different block coefficient of 0.6, 0.7 and 0.8 with constant after body. The heave amplitude of the V bow ship is smaller than that of the U bow ship in the whole range of wave length except extremely short wave as were stated by the earlier investigators. This results holds also in the case of bow vertical motions such as vertical relative displacement, velocity and acceralation. As to the pitch amplitudes, the V bow ship gives smaller value in long waves but larger value in short waves. However, heave and pitch phase angles are practically not influenced by the form of the fore body sections. In the bow motions, a little difference in phase angle is appeared in the vicinity of the wave which has same ship length. With respect to the wave exiting force and moment unfovourable effects could be expected in V bow ships. And these tendency hold also in the wave bending moment.

This paper uses optimization techniques to obtain bow hull form of a 66,000 DWT bulk carrier in calm water and in waves. Parametric modification functions of SAC and section shape of DLWL are used for hull form variation. Multi-objective functions are applied to minimize the wave-making resistance in calm water and added resistance in regular head wave of ${\lambda}/L=0.5$. WAVIS version 1.3 is used to obtain wave-making resistance. The modified Fujii and Takahashi's formula is applied to obtain the added resistance in short wave. The PSO algorithm is employed for the optimization technique. The resistance and motion characteristics in calm water and regular and irregular head waves of the three hull forms are compared. It has been shown that the optimal brings 13.2% reduction in the wave-making resistance and 13.8% reduction in the added resistance at ${\lambda}/L=0.5$; and the mean added resistance reduces by 9.5% at sea state 5.
As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) recently introduced the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships building and the Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) for ship operation, thus an accurate estimation of added resistance of ships advancing in waves has become necessary. In the present study, OpenFOAM, computational fluid dynamics libraries of which source codes are opened to the public, was used to calculate the added resistance and motions of the KCS. Unstructured grid using a hanging-node and cut-cell method was used to generate dense grid around a wave and KCS. A dynamic deformation mesh method was used to consider the motions of the KCS. Five wavelengths from a short wavelength (${\lambda}/LPP=0.65$) to a long wavelength (${\lambda}/LPP=1.95$) were considered. The added resistance and the heave & pitch motions calculated for various waves were compared with the results of model experiments.

The KVLCC2 and its modified hull form were investigated in regular head waves using Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) methods. The modified KVLCC2 (named KWP-bow KVLCC2) is designed for reducing wave reflection from the bow. Firstly, the original KVLCC2 is studied for verification of the present code and methodology and the computed time history of total resistance and 2DOF motions (heave and pitch) for the selected two wave length conditions are directly compared with the results obtained from KRISO towing tank experiment under the identical condition. The predicted added resistance, heave and pitch motion RAOs show relatively good agreement with the experimental results. Secondly, the comparison of performance in waves between KVLCC2 and KWP-bow KVLCC2 is carried out. We confirmed that newly designed hull form shows better performances in all the range of wave length conditions through both the computation and the experiment. The present URANS method can capture the difference of performance in waves of the two hull forms without any special treatment for short wave length conditions. It can be identified that KWP-bow KVLCC2 gives about 8% of energy saving in sea state 5 condition.
