  • The present study is the analyses of what has been attempted and what was understood in terms of improving the regression rate and enlarging the basic understanding of internal flow dynamics. The first part is mainly intended to assess the role of helical grain configuration in the regression rate inside the hybrid rocket motor. To improve the regression rate, a combination of swirl (which is an active method) and helical grain (which is a passive method) was adopted. The second part is devoted to the internal flow dynamics of hybrid rocket combustion. A large eddy simulation was also performed with an objective of understanding the origin of isolated surface roughness patterns seen in several recent experiments. Several turbulent statistics and correlations indicate that the wall injection drastically changes the characteristics of the near-wall turbulence. Contours of instantaneous streamwise velocity in the plane close to the wall clearly show that the structural feature has been significantly altered by the application of wall injection, which is reminiscent of the isolated roughness patterns found in several experiments.

  • In this work, a study was conducted to investigate the effect of diaphragm thickness on the regression rate of the hybrid rocket motor. To observe the flow pattern and the recirculation zone, visualizations of combustion chambers with different diaphragm thickness (5mm, 10mm) were performed. It was found that the case with 5 mm thickness had a larger recirculation zone and therefore, had a higher regression rate than the case with 10mm thickness due to the increased residence time and heat transfer toward the fuel surface. Finally, it was concluded that the thickness of diaphragm can be a critical parameter for the enhancement of the regression rate.

  • In this study, the relationship between the environmental radiation dose rate and meteorological variables was investigated with multiple regression analysis and big data of those variables. The environmental radiation dose rate and 36 different meteorological variables were measured on Ulleung Island, Republic of Korea, from 2011 to 2015. Not all meteorological variables were used in the regression analysis because the different meteorological variables significantly affect the environmental radiation dose rate during different periods, and the degree of influence changes with time. By applying the Pearson correlation analysis and stepwise selection methods to the big dataset, the major meteorological variables influencing the environmental radiation dose rate were identified, which were then used as the independent variables for the regression model. Subsequently, multiple regression models for the monthly datasets and dataset of the entire period were developed.

  • In generally, the regression rate equation was only expressed by function of oxidizer massflux in hybrid propulsion system. This can not represent the local value of regression rate along with oxidizer flow direction. In this study, experimental studies were performed with several pieces of solid fuel. As results, the local regression rate decreases rapidly with axial location near entrance, and increases with axial distance from the leading edge. The empirical formula for local regression rate with function of oxidizer massflux and length was derived.

  • In an attempt to apply hybrid rocket to the RATO (Rocket-Assisted Take Off) system, combustion characteristics of the non-circular grain were figured out in this study. Having larger combustion area, it was reconfirmed that the non-circular grain has advantages over regression rate, characteristic velocity and chamber pressure in which all gave higher values. Experiments were performed to understand the effect of the non-circular grain geometry over time where local regression rates depending on grain location were analyzed. It was found that the regression rate of five distinct locations were different. Partial conclusion driven was that these differences are due to the heat transfer caused by dissimilar distances from the flame layer. Besides, as combustion duration increased, the fuel port became circular, and the regression rate converged to a single value over the whole grain.

  • To understand the role of helical geometry on the regression rate enhancement, two competing underlying mechanisms such as turbulence enhancement and swirling motion production were studied by numerical calculations. Experimental results showed that the enhancement of heat transfer rate has the very close relation to the increase in regression rate even though the percentage of increase in heat transfer rate is different from that in regression rate. This discrepancy is presumably due to the change of turbulent flow feature caused by so-called "blowing mass flux" from the fuel surface. In this regard, the results of RANS calculation show that the blowing velocity is responsible for the reduction of the swirl generation and the increase in the turbulent kinetic energy. And the dominancy of one of the mechanisms causes the increase in the regression rate. Meanwhile, the increase in turbulent kinetic energy due to the mixing of blowing flow and free stream flow does not contribute for the enhancement of the heat transfer rate to the surface because the blowing flow pushes boundary layer away from the solid surface.

  • In this paper, the regression rate of the End-Burning Hybrid Rocket with variation of swirl intensity was investigated experimentally with the variation of fuel diameter, injector shape and angle. When fuel grain diameter is large, fuel mass flow rate increases. And the injector diameter increase, fuel regression rate decrease. The impinging effect of oxidizer flow on fuel surface for fuel combustion efficiency is stronger than swril effect in this End-burning propulsion system. The relation between the regression rate, oxidizer mass flux and swirl intensity was obtained.

  • The variation of regression rate of single port hybrid rocket was studied with various fuel. As fuel, PE, PMMA were used and gas oxygen as oxidizer. The regression rate depends on but flow rates of oxidizer also thermodynamic properties of fuel. In this study, the empirical relation for regression rate of solid fuel were found with mass transfer coefficient(B number) and oxidizer flow rate.

  • Hybrid propulsion systems provide many advantages in terms of stable operation and safety. However, classical hybrid rocket motors have lower fuel regression rate and combustion efficiency compared to solid propellant rocket motor. Accordingly, the recent research efforts are focused on the improvement of engine efficiency and regression rate in the hybrid rocket engine. The present study has numerically investigated the combustion processes in the hybrid rocket engine. The turbulent combustion is represented by the flamelet model and Low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model is employed to reduce the uncertainties for convective heat transfer near solid fuel surface having strong blowing effect. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions have been made for the effects of oxygen injection methods and oxygen injection flow rate on flame structure and regression rate in the vortex hybrid rocket engines

  • It is net easy to predict the shrinkage rate of a plastic injection mold in its design process. The shrinkage rate should be considered as one of the important performances to produce the reliable products. The shrinkage rate can be determined by suing the CAE tools in the design produces. However, since the analysis can take minutes to hours, the high computational costs of performing the analysis limit their use in design optimization. Therefore this study was carried out to presume for mutual relation of analysis condition to get the optimum average shrinkage by regression analysis. The results shown that coefficient of determination of regression equation has a fine reliability over 88.3% and regression equation of average shrinkage is made by regression analysis.
